Scheme 78: Removal & Installation
  1. Remove shield plate on left rear transmission. Remove bolt and washer assemblies (B). (Scheme 21) Disconnect bracket from transmission. Remove bolt and washer assembly (C). Press selector lever cable from ball stud (D) of selector lever on transmission.
  2. Remove center console. See «CENTER CONSOLE»(/audi/s8/d2-2-2002-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd).
  3. Remove bolts (F), and lift selector lever mechanism slightly. (Scheme 21) Pull selector lever cable on bracket downward and out. Unlock clip by pressing two ends together and pull selector lever cable off selector cable.
  4. Remove selector lever cable together with grommet (G). If necessary, loosen selector lever cable from bracket (E). (Scheme 21)
  5. Installation is reverse of removal procedure. Move selector lever and selector lever on transmission to "P" position. Engage parking lock. Lightly grease cable eye and ball socket of selector lever cable.
  6. Install retaining clip in groove on selector lever cable, with angled end facing downward. (Scheme 83) Ensure grommet is installed in correct position, where marking "G" is on top.
  7. Check and adjust selector lever cable. See «SELECTOR LEVER CABLE»(/audi/s8/d2-2-2002-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd__selector-lever-cable) under ADJUSTMENTS. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/s8/d2-2-2002-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd__torque-specifications).

Scheme 80

Scheme 80
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Support engine/transaxle assembly with jack. Remove left transmission support. (Scheme 36)
  2. Remove multifunction TR switch. See «TRANSMISSION RANGE SWITCH»(/audi/s8/d2-2-2002-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd__transmission-range-switch).
  3. Drive spring pin (1) out of transaxle selector lever (2) in driving direction (arrow) until transaxle selector lever can be removed from selector shaft. (Scheme 84) Using a screwdriver, pierce sealing ring and pry out.
  4. To install, lightly lubricate outside of seal and sealing lip with petroleum jelly or equivalent. Open side of seal faces transaxle. Attach NEW seal on installation tool (3454) and push to stop using lever (A). (Scheme 85)
  5. Drive back spring pin in transmission selector lever. Install transmission selector lever and drive spring pin through selector shaft. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/s8/d2-2-2002-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd__torque-specifications).

Disconnect speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor. While pushing holding clip of sensor down, turn and pull out sensor. To install, replace both "O" rings on sensor (arrows). (Scheme 86) Install speedometer VSS with special grease. Ensure holding clip is engaged.

Scheme 81: Removal & Installation
  1. Remove left drive flange. See «LEFT DRIVE FLANGE»(/audi/s8/d2-2-2002-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd__left-drive-flange). Remove circlip (arrow "A") for ball bearing. (Scheme 49)
  2. Hold drive flange with one hand to prevent from falling. Place left drive flange bracket on pressure plates (VW 401 and (VW 402) and press drive flange out of bracket using thrust disc (VW 412). (Scheme 54) Remove impulse wheel for speedometer vehicle speed sensor from drive flange or bracket.
  3. Install impulse wheel for vehicle speed sensor (arrow) on drive flange, and ensure driver on impulse wheel engages in groove of drive flange. (Scheme 51) If necessary, apply petroleum jelly to contact surface of impulse wheel in order to keep it in proper position during installation.
  4. Place drive flange on pressure plate (VW 401). (Scheme 53) Press bracket (together with ball bearing) on using thrust disc (VW 412), tube (VW 415 A) and driving sleeve (32-109).
  5. Install circlip (arrow "A"). (Scheme 49) Install left drive flange. See «LEFT DRIVE FLANGE»(/audi/s8/d2-2-2002-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd__left-drive-flange).
  6. Check final drive fluid level, and top off as necessary. See «CHECKING FLUID LEVEL»(/audi/s8/d2-2-2002-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd__checking-fluid-level) under LUBRICATION. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/s8/d2-2-2002-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd__torque-specifications).
WARNINGAirbag system components must only be checked, removed, installed or repaired by qualified service department personnel.
WARNINGWhen reconnecting battery, passenger compartment must not be occupied. See BATTERY DISCONNECT PRECAUTIONS .

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT PRECAUTIONS»(/audi/s8/d2-2-2002-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd). Turn front wheels and steering wheel to straight ahead position. Pull adjustable steering column out as far as possible, and set to lowest position.
  2. Using Torx bit (T130), remove screws for airbag unit from left and right sides of steering wheel back. (Scheme 87) Carefully pivot airbag unit toward front, disconnect connector and place airbag unit facing up.
  3. Remove screws (8) and carefully pull upper half of steering column trim (1). (Scheme 88) Disconnect electrical connector for spiral spring. remove nut (12) and steering wheel (11).
  4. Remove screws (5 and 6) and Torx screw (9). (Scheme 88) Remove lower steering column trim (7). Disconnect electrical connector for steering column height adjuster.
  5. Loosen socket head bolt (2) at clamp far enough until steering column switch can be moved easily. (Scheme 88) Carefully disconnect electrical connectors from steering column switches. Remove steering column switches from steering column.
  6. To install, replace steering column switches (2) and hand tighten socket head bolt (3) to maintain gap between steering wheel (1). (Scheme 89)
  7. Remove steering wheel again, and finish installation in reverse order of removal. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/s8/d2-2-2002-2003/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd__torque-specifications).
