Selector mechanism function unit, removing and installing

Scheme 335

1. Loosen quick-release connectors - 1 - and - 2 - and remove sound insulation.

1. Remove cross member from subframe - arrows -.

1. Loosen clamping sleeves - 1 - and - 2 - and slide them forward.

1. Remove bolt - arrow - at left exhaust tract strap.

1. Remove bolt - arrow - at right exhaust tract strap.

1. Remove driveshaft heat shield - A - - arrows -.

1. Remove transmission/front driveshaft connecting bolts - arrows -.

1. Slide driveshaft back to rear final drive and tie up.

1. Insert a bolt M12x100 - 1 - with attached nut - 2 - in mount behind transmission oil pan.

1. Dimension - a - = 13 mm.

1. Position Engine and Transmission Holder V.A.G 1383 A plunger on bolt head as shown in illustration.

1. Remove tunnel cross member bolts - arrows -.

Scheme 345

1. Slightly lower tunnel cross member with transmission using Engine and Transmission Holder V.A.G 1383 A.

1. Dimension - a - = max. 40 mm.

Note. Illustration without right front exhaust pipe, however, it does not have to be removed.

1. Remove four lock washers - 1 -.

Note. Always replace lock washers

1. Remove sound insulation - 2 - and slide forward.

1. Unclip mounting frame for selector lever boot - 1 - from center console and lift it upward and off - arrows -.

1. Place selector lever in position "D".
2. Through opening - arrow - in shift mechanism, loosen bolt on selector lever cable approx. one turn using Socket T40031.

Note. Only loosen clamping screw, do not remove. Clamping screw is only accessible in selector lever position "D". Selector lever must remain in position "D" while clamping screw is loose.

1. Remove front center console - 1 - --> «68 - INTERIOR EQUIPMENT»(/audi/s6/c6-2006-2008/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#body-interior)

Scheme 349

1. Disconnect electrical connectors - 2 - and - 4 -.
2. Remove bolts - 1 - , - 3 - , - 5 - and - 6 -.

Note. A second technician is required when detaching shift mechanism function unit below vehicle.

1. Press retaining clamps - arrows - inward and lower selector mechanism function unit downward.

Scheme 350

1. Remove selector lever cable retaining clip - 1 - sideways.
2. Remove shift mechanism function unit downward and simultaneously remove selector lever cable - 2 -.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal, note the following

Torque specifications --> Selector mechanism, servicing, assembly overview

Note. Lightly grease ball socket of selector lever cable with polycarbamide grease G 052 142 A2 before installing. Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

1. Install tunnel cross member --> «Tunnel cross member, transmission mount and transmission support, assembly overview»(/audi/s6/c6-2006-2008/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09e-awd) .
2. Adjust selector lever cable --> «Selector lever cable, adjusting»(/audi/s6/c6-2006-2008/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09e-awd__selector-lever-cable-adjusting) .

1. Install driveshaft to transmission --> «39 - FINAL DRIVE, DIFFERENTIAL»(/audi/s6/c6-2006-2008/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#rear-final-drive-0ar)
2. Reconnect exhaust system and ensure it is not under stress --> «26 - EXHAUST SYSTEM, EMISSION CONTROLS»(/audi/s6/c6-2006-2008/remont/cooling-fan/#52l-10-cyl-4v-engine-mechanical-engine-codes-bxa) .
3. Install front cross member --> «50 - BODY - FRONT»(/audi/s6/c6-2006-2008/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#body-exterior) .
4. Install front center console --> «68 - INTERIOR EQUIPMENT»(/audi/s6/c6-2006-2008/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#body-interior) .
