Characteristics of On Board Diagnostic (OBD)

The Engine Control Module (Motronic Engine Control Module -J220-) is equipped with DTC memory.

Malfunction recognition

If malfunctions occur at the exhaust relevant systems or components, they are stored in DTC memory with a description of the malfunction type.

The stored malfunctions can be checked with a standard diagnostic tester. See MODE 3: CHECK DTC MEMORY .

The Engine Control Module (ECM) differentiates between different DTCs after evaluating the information. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) TABLES .

If the ECM recognizes malfunctions that lead to a worsening of emissions values, it indicates them by lighting the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K83- in the instrument cluster. See MALFUNCTION LAMP FOR ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD)/MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) -K83- IN INSTRUMENT CLUSTER .

E-Gas -relevant malfunctions are also indicated by the Electronic Power Control (EPC) Warning Lamp -K132- ("EPC warning lamp") in the instrument cluster. See ELECTRONIC POWER CONTROL (EPC) WARNING LAMP -K132- IN INSTRUMENT CLUSTER .

When disconnecting harness connectors from Engine Control Module (ECM) or when disconnecting battery, all adaptation values in the control module are erased. DTC memory content will remain intact however. After re - connecting harness connectors or battery, the following work steps must be performed in the mentioned sequence

  1. Check DTC memory. See «MODE 3: CHECK DTC MEMORY»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/testing-diagnostics/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-generic-scan-tool-42l-v8-5v-art-awn-bbd__mode-3-check-dtc-memory) .
  2. If necessary, erase DTC memory. See «MODE 4: RESET/ERASE DIAGNOSTIC DATA»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/testing-diagnostics/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-generic-scan-tool-42l-v8-5v-art-awn-bbd__mode-4-reseterase-diagnostic-data) .
  3. If DTC memory was erased, generate readiness code. See «READINESS CODE, GENERATING»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/testing-diagnostics/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-generic-scan-tool-42l-v8-5v-art-awn-bbd) .
  1. End diagnosis and switch ignition off.

ENGINE IDENTIFICATION

Malfunction lamp for On Board Diagnostic (OBD)/Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K83- in instrument cluster

If the ECM recognizes malfunctions that lead to a worsening of emissions values, it indicates them by lighting the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K83- in the instrument cluster.

Function

After switching on the ignition, the ECM switches on the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K83-. Shortly after engine is started, the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K83- will go out. This requires, first of all, that the Engine Control Module (ECM) does not detect a malfunction that worsens the emissions values and, secondly, that activation of the lamp by the Engine Control Module (ECM) is OK.

Malfunction messages

If malfunctions that worsen emissions are recognized during operation of the engine, the ECM switches on the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K83-. An entry is made in DTC memory of ECM at the same time.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K83- can be switched on to blinking or continuously lit. In any case the DTC memory must be checked and erased if necessary. See MODE 3: CHECK DTC MEMORY and MODE 4: RESET/ERASE DIAGNOSTIC DATA .

Continuously lit

There is a malfunction that causes increased emissions values. DTC memory of Engine Control Module (ECM) must be checked.

Blinking

There is a malfunction that causes damage to the catalytic converter in this driving condition (e.g. combustion misfire). In this case, vehicle must only be driven at reduced performance!

Note. Check DTC memory if there is a driveability problem or a customer complaint, but the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K83- is not lit. There may be DTCs stored that do not cause the exhaust MIL to light up immediately, but only after engine is started again and malfunction is recognized again.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) function test

  1. Switch ignition on. Warning lamp for On Board Diagnostic/Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K83- must light up
  2. Start engine. Shortly after engine is started, the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K83- will go out if there are no malfunctions stored in DTC memory that relate to emissions

If warning lamp does not light up at all

The switch-on signal for Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is transferred from the Engine Control Module (ECM) to the instrument cluster via wire connection or via CAN-Bus, depending on version.

  1. Checking wire connections See appropriate System Wiring Diagram article.
  2. Check terminal resistance for CAN-Bus. See «TERMINAL RESISTANCE FOR CAN-BUS, CHECKING»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/fuel-system/#multiport-fuel-injection-mfi-generic-scan-tool-42l-v8-5v-art-awn-bbd__terminal-resistance-for-can-bus-checking) .

Electronic Power Control (EPC) Warning Lamp -K132- in instrument cluster

"EPC" is an abbreviation and stands for Electronic Power Control (E-gas).

Engine Control Module (ECM) checks all components that are important for function of the E-Gas system after ignition is switched on.

If malfunctions are recognized in the E-Gas system during operation of the engine, the Engine Control Module (ECM) switches on the Electronic Power Control (EPC) Warning Lamp -K132-. An entry is made in DTC memory of ECM at the same time.

  1. Switch ignition on. Engine Control Module (ECM) switches EPC lamp on.
  2. Start engine. Shortly after engine is started, the EPC warning lamp will go out if there are no malfunctions stored in DTC memory that relate to the E-gas system

TEST-ID DIAGNOSTIC TEXT (MODE 9)

  1. End diagnosis and switch ignition off.

The readiness code is an 8 digit number block that indicates the status of emission relevant diagnostics.

When the diagnostic for a system (e.g.: secondary air system) has run through successfully, the respective digit of the number block is set from 1 to 0.

Diagnostics are performed at regular intervals during normal vehicle operation. After repairing an exhaust relevant system, the readiness code should be generated via a road test to ensure that these systems are working according to specifications. If a malfunction is recognized during the diagnostic, it is stored in DTC memory.

The readiness code is erased every time DTC memory is erased or when voltage supply is interrupted. DTC memory should therefore only be erased when there are DTCs stored.

  1. No DTCs in DTC memory; check DTC memory. See «MODE 3: CHECK DTC MEMORY»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/testing-diagnostics/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-generic-scan-tool-42l-v8-5v-art-awn-bbd__mode-3-check-dtc-memory) .
