Testing & Diagnostics 126 illustrations ~8473 words

Features

The term "self-diagnosis" or On Board Diagnostic (OBD) relates specifically to the electrical and electronic part of the control system.

The control module is equipped with a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory so that the malfunction can be traced quickly in the event of an electronic/electrical component failure or an open circuit.

The advantages of On Board Diagnostic can only be fully exploited by using the Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 or the V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool, in operating mode 1 "Rapid data transfer".

Functions which the Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 or the V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool can register. See FUNCTIONS WHICH CAN BE SELECTED WHEN USING V.A.G 1551 SCAN TOOL .

The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory is a non - volatile memory and thus independent of the power supply.

Note. If the engine control module detects malfunctions which result in a deterioration of exhaust emissions, these malfunctions will be indicated by illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K83- in the instrument cluster. Explanations on this lamp, see MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) -K83-, FUNCTION . Malfunctions related to Electronic Power Control (EPC) are additionally indicated by the Electronic Power Control (EPC) warning lamp -K132- which is situated in the instrument cluster. Explanations on this lamp, see ELECTRONIC POWER CONTROL (EPC) WARNING LAMP -K132- (FOR ELECTRONIC THROTTLE), FUNCTION .

  7. Mode 8 is used to check the tank for leaks .
  8. The following vehicle information can be read out with mode 9: VIN, part number and program/data status of engine control module and the check total (this value is an internally calculated value) .

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K83-, function

If exhaust-related malfunctions are recognized by the engine control module these are indicated by switching on the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) -K83-.

Location of -K83

Scheme 1

Scheme 1: Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K83-, function

Note. When switched on, the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) -K83 - may flash or illuminate constantly. In any case the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory must be checked. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) MEMORY, CHECKING AND ERASING .

Flashing of MIL -K83

  1. A malfunction is present which under these driving conditions will cause damage to the catalytic converter. In this case continue driving with reduced power only (until MIL goes out or illuminates continuously) and eliminate the malfunction as quickly as possible!

Continuous illumination of malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) -K83

  1. A malfunction is present which causes deterioration of the exhaust emission. Check DTC memory for engine control module or automatic transmission .
  2. If there is a performance problem or a customer complaint and the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) -K83- does not illuminate, check DTC memory after function test of malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) -K83 - as DTCs may have been stored which do not switch on the MIL immediately .

Functional check

  1. Switch on ignition

The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) -K83- must illuminate.

  1. If malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) -K83 - does not illuminate, check DTC memory. See «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) MEMORY, CHECKING AND ERASING»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/testing-diagnostics/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-42l-v8-5v-bbd__diagnostic-trouble-code-dtc-memory-checking) .

Electronic Power Control (EPC) warning lamp -K132- (for electronic throttle), function

"EPC" is an abbreviation for Electronic Power Control and refers to the electronic throttle control system.

Location of the EPC warning lamp

Scheme 2

Scheme 2: Electronic Power Control (EPC) warning lamp -K132- (for electronic throttle), function

The engine control module switches on the EPC lamp when the ignition is switched on.

After the engine has been started the engine control module tests all parts for malfunctions relating to the electronic throttle control system.

During the test sequence the EPC warning lamp illuminates for about 3 seconds. If this check reveals a malfunction, the warning light remains illuminated.

If a malfunction is detected in the electronic throttle system while the engine is running, the engine control module switches on the EPC warning lamp. At the same time there is an entry into the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory of the engine control module (these DTCs are marked in the DTC table).

Functional check on warning lamp

  1. Start engine. Specified value: If no DTCs relating to the electronic throttle system are stored in the DTC memory the EPC warning lamp should illuminate for about 3 seconds after the engine is started.

If the EPC warning lamp does not illuminate

  1. Check wiring from engine control module to EPC warning lamp in instrument cluster.
  2. Check DTC memory of engine control module. See «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) MEMORY, CHECKING AND ERASING»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/testing-diagnostics/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-42l-v8-5v-bbd__diagnostic-trouble-code-dtc-memory-checking) .

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) table

  1. If malfunctions occur in the monitored sensors and components, these are stored in the DTC memory together with an indication of type of malfunction.
  2. DTCs relevant to "electronic throttle" are additionally indicated by a warning light (EPC warning lamp) located in the instrument cluster.
  3. Malfunctions which cause deterioration of the exhaust emissions are displayed via an exhaust warning lamp (MIL) which is also located in the instrument cluster. Some malfunctions cause the MIL to switch on immediately after detection. Malfunctions also may arise for which the MIL is only switched on when the malfunction is recognized again after the engine has been restarted.
  4. If the connector is unplugged from engine control module or if the battery is disconnected, all the stored values in the control module will be erased. However, the contents of the DTC memory are retained. If the engine is then started, it may run rough for a short period. In addition, the following adaptation procedures must be performed after reconnection. See «THROTTLE VALVE CONTROL MODULE, ADAPTATION»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/fuel-system/#multiport-fuel-injection-mfi-42l-v8-5v-bbd__throttle-valve-control-module-adaptation) .
  5. The DTC table is sorted according to the 5 -digit DTC on the left.
  6. If a stored malfunction does not appear within the next 40 engine starts, the DTC will be automatically erased.
  7. Sporadic malfunctions are marked "SP" (sporadic malfunction) on the V.A.G 1551 display.
  8. Do not immediately replace components indicated as faulty by the V.A.G 1551 but first check the wiring and connectors of these components against the wiring diagram. Also check the ground connections against wiring diagram. This is particularly relevant for malfunctions recorded as "occurring sporadically" (SP).
  9. If DTC memory was erased, see «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) MEMORY, CHECKING AND ERASING»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/testing-diagnostics/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-42l-v8-5v-bbd__diagnostic-trouble-code-dtc-memory-checking) . Readiness code must be generated again. See «READINESS CODE, GENERATING»(/audi/s6/c5-1999-2004/remont/testing-diagnostics/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-42l-v8-5v-bbd) .

Readiness code

The readiness code appears as an 8 -digit display on measured value block 086, display zone 1. Each of the 8 digits is allocated to a particular emission -related system.

If the function of these systems is checked by On Board Diagnostic (OBD) through a test which has to be run fully, the position in the 8 -digit display is set from "1" to "0". This happens regardless whether the test is performed with "OK" or with "not OK". This is under the condition that the test has been fully completed.

If a test is performed fully but with "not OK" a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is stored in the DTC memory. Checking DTC memory. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) MEMORY, CHECKING AND ERASING .

If the readiness code is produced after the test has been run successfully it is also called "0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0" (measured value block 086, display zone 1).

The readiness code is reset to

"1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1" if

  1. DTC memory has been erased
  2. A new engine control module is installed.

Test sequence

  1. Connect vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 or V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool and select engine electronics control unit with "Address word" 01.
