ATF PAN, ATF STRAINER AND MECHATRONIC OVERVIEW
| CAUTION | There is a risk of damaging the transmission. Do not start the engine when there is no ATF in the transmission or if the ATF pan has been removed. |
Note. Always replace the Mechatronic unit if it is dirty or faulty. Clean working conditions for the automatic transmission, refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS . General repair instructions, refer to REPAIR INFORMATION . Coat the O-rings and seal with ATF. Other types of lubrication lead to faults in the transmission hydraulics.

ATF STRAINER
Removing
Scheme 2
Note. Clean working conditions for the automatic transmission. Refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS . General repair instructions, refer to REPAIR INFORMATION .
Remove the ATF oil pan. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID OIL PAN .
Carefully remove the ATF strainer -A- from the transmission.
Installing
Scheme 3
Note. The ATF strainer seal -A- normally stays in the transmission. The seal must be removed first to replace the ATF strainer. The same seal can be used again if the old ATF strainer is also being used again.
Note the Following when Replacing with a New Oil Strainer
Note. Replace the ATF strainer only if it is damaged. With high mileage vehicles, replace the ATF strainer when the ATF pan is removed.
Carefully remove the ATF strainer seal -A- from the transmission with a screwdriver.
Note. Do not damage sealing surface. The illustration shows seal with the Mechatronic unit removed. The new ATF strainer comes with the seal installed.
Continuation for New and Old ATF Strainer
Carefully press the intake neck on the new ATF strainer -A- into the opening on the transmission as far as the stop.
Note. When replacing with a new ATF strainer, press it into the transmission with the seal already installed.
Install the ATF pan. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID OIL PAN .
Fill the ATF. Refer to ATF, DRAINING OR FILLING AFTER REPAIR .
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID OIL PAN
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Assembly Pin T40199
Removing
Note. Clean working conditions for the automatic transmission, refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS . General repair instructions, refer to REPAIR INFORMATION .
Remove the tunnel crossmember. Refer to TUNNEL CROSSMEMBER .
Remove the nut -1- from the power steering hydraulic line.
Scheme 4
| CAUTION | The suspension components could be damaged. Do not rest the vehicle on its wheels if the subframe mount, the steering gear or the subframe crossbrace are not installed correctly. Do not support the vehicle on the subframe or the subframe crossbrace (for example with a trolley jack or similar equipment). |
Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the subframe crossbrace.
Drain the ATF -arrow-. Refer to ATF, DRAINING OR FILLING AFTER REPAIR .
Scheme 5
Remove the bolts from the ATF pan opposite the tightening sequence: -13 to 1-.
Remove the ATF oil pan.
Installing
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following
- For the correct tightening specifications, refer to «ATF PAN, ATF STRAINER AND MECHATRONIC OVERVIEW»(/audi/q5/i-2008-2012/remont/manual-trans/#gears-hydraulic-controls-automatic-transmission-0b6__atf-pan-atf-strainer-and-mechatronic) .
Note. Replace the seal. Replace the ATF pan bolts. With high mileage vehicles, replace the ATF strainer when the ATF pan is removed. Refer to ATF STRAINER . Otherwise the ATF strainer must be replaced only if it is damaged.
Clean all magnets in the ATF oil pan. Make sure the magnets are in full contact with the ATF oil pan.
Clean the sealing surface from all sealant residue.
Install the T40199 in locations -10, 11, 12, and 13- with the ATF pan removed.
Note. The T40199 center the gasket and the ATF oil pan. This makes sure the ATF oil pan is sealed correctly.
Install the new gasket and ATF oil pan over the T40199.
Tighten the new ATF oil pan bolts in the following sequence: -1 to 9-.
Remove the T40199.
Install the remaining bolts in sequence -10, 11, 12, and 13-.
Install the subframe crossbrace. Refer to Removal and Installation .
Install tunnel crossmember. Refer to TUNNEL CROSSMEMBER .
Fill the ATF. Refer to ATF, DRAINING OR FILLING AFTER REPAIR .
MECHATRONIC UNIT
Removing
Note. Clean working conditions for the automatic transmission, refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS . General repair instructions, refer to REPAIR INFORMATION . Always replace the Mechatronic unit if it is dirty or faulty.
Disconnect battery. Refer to [For engine(s) CAEB, CALB] Removal and Installation .
Remove the ATF oil pan. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID OIL PAN .
Remove the ATF strainer. Refer to ATF STRAINER .
| CAUTION | There is a risk of destroying the transmission control module (Mechatronic) with static discharge. Always discharge static by touching a grounded object, for example, vehicle ground, before touching or removing the Mechatronic unit. |
Touch the vehicle ground with a bare hand to discharge the static electricity.
Note. To remove the Mechatronic, the wiring harness -B- with the connector -C- must first be disconnected from it. The wiring harness connector remains installed in the transmission housing.
Note. The following description shows the Mechatronic removed. The wiring harness connector is still installed in the transmission housing.
Remove the wiring harness -A- from the Mechatronic -B-. Disengage the tab -arrow-, on the back of the wiring harness, from the Mechatronic.
Note. If the tab -arrow- on the backside of the wiring harness breaks off, the wiring harness must be replaced.
Disconnect the connector -C- from the socket -D- on the Mechatronic.
Carefully lay the wiring harness aside.
Note. The wiring harness is connected to the installed connector and cannot be removed.
Remove the Mechatronic bolts in reverse order, for example first bolt - 14-, then -13-, ••• through -1-.
Scheme 6
Note. Only the indicated bolts -14 through 1- may be loosened. If other bolts are loosened, this may affect the function of the Mechatronic unit or it may come apart.
Remove the Mechatronic from the transmission.
Installing
- For the correct tightening specifications, refer to «ATF PAN, ATF STRAINER AND MECHATRONIC OVERVIEW»(/audi/q5/i-2008-2012/remont/manual-trans/#gears-hydraulic-controls-automatic-transmission-0b6__atf-pan-atf-strainer-and-mechatronic) .
Make sure the seal -B- is installed correctly and is secure.
Set Mechatronic unit in place without using force, and at the same time insert stud on the selector lever -arrow- into the groove on the selector slide -A- ; if necessary, move selector slide back or forth.
Scheme 7
Tighten the bolts -1 and 2- on the Mechatronic to 2 Nm.
Tighten the bolts on the Mechatronic to the tightening specification and in the given sequence, that is, first bolt -1-, then -2- through -14 -.
Clip the wiring harness -B- onto the Mechatronic. At the same time, insert the tab -arrow- on the back of the wiring harness into the Mechatronic unit.
Scheme 8
Note. If the tab on the backside of the wiring harness breaks off, the wiring harness must be replaced.
Carefully insert the connector -C- into the Mechatronic connector socket.
Install in reverse order of removal paying attention to the following
Install the ATF strainer. Refer to ATF STRAINER .
Install the ATF pan. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID OIL PAN .
Fill the ATF. Refer to ATF, DRAINING OR FILLING AFTER REPAIR .
WIRING HARNESS IN TRANSMISSION
