Starter 2 illustrations ~300 words

DESCRIPTION

TROUBLE SHOOTING

Note. For additional trouble shooting, see the TROUBLE SHOOTING - BASIC PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.

STARTER DOES NOT CRANK ENGINE

Note. On A/T vehicles, also check park/neutral switch.

  1. Ensure battery is fully charged, engine-to-body ground strap is connected and all cable connections are clean and tight. With ignition switch in crank position, check voltage at starter solenoid wire terminal. If reading is 8 volts or greater, go to step 3). If reading is less than 8 volts, go to next step.
  2. Check voltage at Black/Yellow wire terminal of ignition switch. If reading is at least 8 volts, repair circuit between ignition switch and starter solenoid. If reading is less than 8 volts, replace ignition switch.
  3. With ignition switch in start position, check voltage at bottom (armature) terminal of starter solenoid. If reading is at least 8 volts, repair or replace starter. If reading is less than 8 volts, replace starter solenoid.

STARTER CRANKS TOO SLOWLY

Ensure battery is fully charged. Ensure all cable connections are clean and tight. Ensure ground strap, located between transmission and body, is clean and tight. Ensure engine crankcase is filled with oil of recommended viscosity. If starter still turns slowly, repair or replace starter.

Removal & Installation

Removal and installation is basically an unbolt and bolt-on procedure. Tighten starter-to-block bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m).
