CHECKING FLUID LEVEL

CAUTIONPart numbers are listed for reference only. Always check with your Parts department for latest information.

Note. Only ATF with designation (ESSO LT 71141) can be added to ATF. Additives cannot be used.

Note. ATF level is affected by ATF temperature. Checking ATF level at too low a temperature leads to overfilling. Checking ATF level at too high a temperature leads to under filling. Overfilling or under filling transaxle can lead to transaxle malfunction. ATF temperature can be read with Vehicle Diagnostic, Test and Information System or at display of VAG (1551) Scan Tool.

Note. V.A.G. Scan Tool (1551) is required to check ATF level. Scan tool is used to measure ATF temperature. Follow aftermarket scan tool manufacturer instructions (if applicable) to check ATF temperature.

For correct installation position of wiring harness connector, tabs on collar must be horizontal and flattened side of connector must be parallel to oil pan sealing surface.
  5. Ensure holding tabs for harness connector engage. Replace damaged holding clamps. Wiring harness must be routed according to illustration. see scheme 92 If there are deviations, wiring harness can get pinched when valve body is installed and wiring harness could be damaged.
  6. Install valve body without force. While installing, locate pin of latch washer (1) in groove of selector slide (2). see scheme 97
  7. Install circlip (arrows) for wiring harness connector. see scheme 95
  8. Tighten valve body bolts (arrows) hand tight. Ensure correct bolts are used in valve body. see scheme 96 Starting from inside, and working outward, tighten valve body bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd__torque-specifications).
  9. Coat gasket on suction collar of ATF sump with thin later of petroleum jelly, or similar. Install ATF sump. see scheme 94 Tighten ATF sump bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd__torque-specifications).
  10. Install oil pan. See «OIL PAN»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd). Change or top off ATF. See «DRAINING & REFILLING»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd__draining-refilling) under LUBRICATION.
  1. Remove valve body. See «VALVE BODY»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd).
  2. Use a small screwdriver to pry out holding tabs on solenoid valve connectors. Disconnect connectors. Disconnect wiring harness on side holding tabs of valve body.
  3. Loosen transmission RPM sensor harness connector (A) on back of valve body. see scheme 92 Pull both holding clamps (arrows) out carefully with pliers.
  4. Installation is reverse of removal procedure. Connect wiring harness connectors to appropriate solenoids. Connect transmission RPM sensor harness connector on back of valve body. Fasten wiring harness with holding clamps (arrows). see scheme 92 Ensure holding tabs engage.
  5. Replace damaged holding clamps. Install valve body. See «VALVE BODY»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd).
  6. Install oil pan. See «OIL PAN»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd). Change or top off ATF. See «DRAINING & REFILLING»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at-01l-awd__draining-refilling) under LUBRICATION.
