Safety precautions

When road testing and using testing and measuring equipment, observe the following

To prevent injury or damage to test and measuring equipment and to electrical and electronic car components, observe the following

1. Always switch the ignition off before connecting or disconnecting test or measuring equipment.
2. During certain tests it can happen that the Transmission Control Module (TCM) recognizes a malfunction which is then stored in memory. It is therefore necessary to check the DTC memory and erase it after all tests and repairs are completed.
3. Always switch the ignition off when connecting or disconnecting the battery, otherwise the TCM may be damaged.

Transmission controls

The automatic transmission is controlled electronically and hydraulically.

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217- for the automatic transmission obtains information from components that have an effect on the shifting. Based on this information the TCM controls the respective solenoid valves in the valve body. The solenoid valves direct the oil pressure created by the ATF oil pump to the respective clutches or brakes.

Malfunction recognition by the TCM

The TCM is equipped with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory. Malfunctions that occur in the monitored sensors, components, or wiring are stored in DTC memory, which can be checked using the VAG 1551 or VAG 1552 Scan Tool (ST). If the printer of the VAG 1551 scan tool is switched on, the DTCs will be printed. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) TABLE .

The On Board Diagnostic (OBD) system differentiates between "static" and "sporadic" malfunctions. Static malfunctions are stored until DTC memory is checked and then erased using the VAG 1551 scan tool. If a malfunction that has been stored as "static" no longer exists after the ignition is switched on, it will be converted to "sporadic."

Malfunctions that occur sporadically are identified by the "/SP" designation in the VAG 1551 scan tool display. A sporadic malfunction is automatically erased after 40 engine cold-starts (and subsequent transmission warm-up cycles). A warm-up cycle is recognized when the ATF temperature is below 71° C at start and rises to at least 21° C.

The OBD program can be initiated using the VAG 1551 scan tool in "Rapid data transfer" operating mode 1.

TCM backup functions

If one or more components or sensors malfunction, the TCM -J217- activates corresponding substitute functions or backup programs. This ensures that the automatic transmission operates without damage or effect to the operation or quality of the shifting.

If certain malfunctions occur and the TCM is active, the transmission range engaged at that moment is maintained. As soon as the driving situation permits, the TCM activates the "mechanical backup with active control module" mode while ensuring transmission security.

Scheme 112

1. The transmission shifts out of all forward gears into hydraulic 4th gear. The torque converter clutch is unlocked (not applied). All solenoid valves are de-energized.
2. Maximum shift pressure is applied to the power transmitting elements.
3. Reverse gear can be engaged. The shift lock solenoid is active (in "P" and "N").
4. All of the segments of the transmission range selector lever display are lit up completely.
5. The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is switched on after 3 Dcy. Check DTC memory (see «ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD), CHECKING»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-5-spd-automatic-transmission-01l-awd) ), and consult DTC table (see «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) TABLE»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-5-spd-automatic-transmission-01l-awd__diagnostic-trouble-code-dtc-table) ).

If the TCM malfunctions (for example, there is a power loss a connector is disconnected) the transmission immediately operates in "mechanical backup with non-active control module" mode.

Mechanical backup with non-active control module

1. The transmission shifts out of all forward gears into hydraulic 4th gear. The torque converter clutch is unlocked (not applied). All solenoid valves are de-energized.
2. Maximum shift pressure is applied to the power-transmitting elements.
3. Reverse gear can be engaged. The shift lock solenoid is active (in "P" and "N").
4. All of the segments of the transmission range selector lever display are dark.
5. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217-is completely inoperative, i.e. it cannot conduct its OBD program.
6. The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is switched on when the Engine Control Module (ECM) recognizes the CAN-Bus malfunction (missing data exchange between the ECM and TCM) after 2Dcy. If necessary, check DTC memory of ECM. Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), function

If emissions-influencing malfunctions are recognized by the TCM, the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) will be switched on.

Location of the MIL

Note. When the MIL is switched on, it will either blink or light continuously. In either case, the DTC memory for the TCM must be checked, see ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD), CHECKING .

1. MIL flashing : there is a malfunction that could damage the Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC). In this case, drive only with reduced power.
2. MIL continuously on : there is a malfunction that degrades emissions. Check DTC memory of the Engine Control Module (ECM) or the TCM.
3. If there are driveability problems (e.g. a customer complaint) and the MIL is not on, the MIL functional test must be carried out, since malfunctions that do not immediately switch on the MIL can be stored.

MIL functional check

1. Switch ignition on. The MIL must come on.

If the MIL does not come on when the ignition is switched on (with the engine not running)

1. Check DTC memory. See «ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD), CHECKING»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-5-spd-automatic-transmission-01l-awd) .
2. If necessary, check wiring per wiring diagram or replace light bulb.
3. Start engine and let idle. The MIL must be switched off after several seconds.

If the MIL is not switched off after the engine is started

Conditions for recognition of a driving cycle (Dcy)

A driving cycle (Dcy) is considered complete when the ignition is switched on one time, the engine is started, the engine start is recognized by the control module, and the ignition is switched off again.

2. Open E-box in right side of plenum by unscrewing 7 bolts (arrows).
3. Unclip bolt cover to unscrew bolt in upper right-hand section of illustration.
4. Release multi-pin connector lock -2-, then disconnect multi-pin connector from TCM (see «DISCONNECTING MULTI-PIN CONNECTOR FROM TCM -J217.»(/audi/a8/d3-2002-2005/remont/automatic-trans/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-5-spd-automatic-transmission-01l-awd) ).
5. Unscrew bolts (arrows) and remove TCM (together with bracket) from E-box.
6. Check container for water penetration and reseal if necessary.

Installing

1. Install in reverse order of removal.

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) table

Note. The following table contains all possible malfunctions that are recognized by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217- and displayed by the VAG 1551 or VAG 1552 Scan Tool (ST) when the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory is checked. The DTC is printed out in the "Rapid data transfer" operating mode only when the printer of the VAG 1551 scan tool is switched on. Example: DTC 17087P0703 (VAG code and P-code). If malfunctions occur occasionally or if the DTC memory was not erased after corrective actions, these malfunctions are indicated as "sporadic" for a specified amount of time. Malfunction recognition by the TCM, see TRANSMISSION CONTROLS . If components are determined to be malfunctioning when the DTC memory is checked, check the wiring to the components for a short circuit and open circuit. See appropriate System Wiring Diagrams . "Dcy " means "driving cycle." Conditions for recognition of a driving cycle (Dcy), see MIL FUNCTIONAL CHECK . Item 11 in (Scheme 182): the ignition angle is briefly retarded through this TCM signal, depending on speed and engine RPM, during a transmission range change (shift), in order to soften the shift. Item 12 in (Scheme 182): if, while there is a driving malfunction or operating malfunction, a transmission range is engaged by hand with the vehicle parked and the engine at high RPM, the ECM will reduce engine torque instantaneously by shielding the injection signals.

Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) (function 03)

Note. The output DTM can only be carried out when the selector lever is in "P" position, the engine is running, and the vehicle is standing still. The output DTM is discontinued when the engine is started. The function of the solenoid valves 1 -N88-, 2 -N89- and 3 -N90- and the shift lock solenoid -N110- are checked audibly during the output DTM. During the audible check the surrounding noises should be limited, since the clicking noises are very quiet. Pressure control valves 1 -N215-, 2 -N216-, 3 -N217-, 4 -N218- and pressure regulating valve 5 -N233- are triggered by the output DTM. A direct functional check of these components is not possible. However, electrical malfunctions, which occur during this triggering, are eventually stored in the DTC memory through the OBD program. During the output DTM the individual controls are triggered until the --> button is pressed. Only a complete final control diagnosis is possible after the ignition is switched on. To repeat, the ignition must be switched off and switched on again.

1. Unlock bayonet lock -4- of 16-pin connector to transmission by turning it (remove bracket -1- for noise insulation if necessary).
2. Check wiring connections for continuity (using multimeter) between terminals of 16-pin connector and sockets of test box VAG 1598. For Specifications see scheme 145
