Contact corrosion!

With the extensive use of aluminum construction, corrosion caused by contact between dissimilar metals may result if the wrong fastening components (screws, bolts, nuts, washers, rivets, plugs, grommets, adhesives, etc.) are installed.

For this reason, the manufacturer only installs fastening components that have a special surface coating, recognized by its greenish color, and only uses rubber parts, plastic parts and adhesives that are electrically non-conductive.

These parts, compatible for use with aluminum, are also available as replacement parts.

Use only Genuine Parts!

If there is any doubt about whether the old parts are suitable for re-use, always install new replacement parts.

All accessories must be approved by Audi of America, Inc.

Damage from contact corrosion caused by improper assembly with unsuitable parts is NOT covered under warranty!

Glove box and bracket for glove box, removing and installing

Note. The following list refers to (Scheme 1).

  1. Knee bar For passenger side Removing Open glove box. Remove lock cylinder and glove box push button. See «LOCK CYLINDER AND PUSH BUTTON FOR GLOVE BOX, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a8/d2-1994-1999/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#interior-equipment) . Remove screws -9-. Remove knee bar trim -2-. Remove screws -10-. Remove kneebar retaining panel -15- from bracket -8-. Disconnect connector for illumination. Remove kneebar. Installing Adjust glove box with adjustment angle -16- and cam -20-. Adjust height at elongated hole at spring nut -19-. Adjust toward front and rear using screw -17-. Perform lateral adjustment by adjusting cam -20-. Loosen screw -21- and adjust cam lever -22- for lateral adjustment. Tighten screw -21-.

  1. Precision mechanic screwdriver; 1.6 x 40 mm

Removing

  1. Remove glove box (see «GLOVE BOX AND BRACKET FOR GLOVE BOX, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a8/d2-1994-1999/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#interior-equipment__glove-box-and-bracket-for-glove) ) and place in floor outlet.
  2. Turn vehicle key approx. 45° -a-.
  3. Insert precision screwdriver into hole (arrow).
  4. Lock screwdriver into guide tab (arrow).
  5. Press guide tab upward. Lock cylinder is unlocked (if necessary, correct key position slightly).
  6. Pull out lock cylinder with vehicle key inserted. NOTE: Shown in illustration with lock removed.
  7. Loosen screw (arrow) through hole for lock cylinder until retaining bracket slides back.
  8. Remove push button from front.
  9. Turn knurled nut (arrow) for Bowden cable adjustment slightly inward so cable loosens.
  10. Unhook Bowden cable at push button and remove push button.

Installing

Installation is done in reverse order of removal, noting the following

  1. If push button has play or glove box does not close properly, adjust Bowden cable length at knurled nut.

Knee bar and bracket, driver side, removing and installing

Note. The following list refers to see scheme 7.

Removing and installing air vent for side outlet, rear

  1. Remove screw -1-.
  2. Slide air duct -2- out completely in direction of left arrow until air duct unhooks from A/C.
  3. Remove air duct downward in direction of arrow.
  4. Disconnect connector for floor outlet light -3-.
  5. Area -4- is removed on vehicles with manual transmission.

Trim for steering column switch, overview

Trim for steering column switch, removing and installing

  1. Remove bolts (arrows) and remove trim -1-.
  2. Remove airbag unit driver side. See appropriate Air Bag Restraint Systems article in Restraints.
  3. Remove steering wheel. See appropriate Air Bag Restraint Systems article in Restraints.
  4. Remove lower gap cover in direction of arrow.
  5. Remove bolts -1- and remove handle -2- for steering column adjustment. see scheme 12
  6. Remove bolts -7- and -8- and remove lower trim for steering column switch -4-.
  7. If necessary disconnect connector for switch -6- or remove switch. NOTE: In the illustration, trim for steering column switch up to m.y. 06.97 is shown.

Center console, overview

Center console, removing and installing

  1. Make auxiliary tool for disassembly of outlet.
  2. Bend wire of 3 mm diameter as shown in illustration.
  3. Dimension -x- = 6 mm
  4. Remove speaker mounting for telephone. See «CENTER CONSOLE AND CENTER ARMREST WITH TELEPHONE, INSTALLATION»(/audi/a8/d2-1994-1999/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#interior-equipment__center-console-and-center-armrest-with).
  5. Position seats all the way back.
  6. Remove floor left and right cover. See «FLOOR PAD FRONT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a8/d2-1994-1999/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#interior-trim__floor-pad-front-removing-and-installing).
  7. Turn accelerator pedal stop 1/4 revolution (90°) further.
  8. Remove screws -1- and -2-.
  9. Remove trim left for center console -3- (to remove, slide trim forward and unhook from back).
  10. Remove screws -2- and -3-. see scheme 16
  11. The front screws -2- can be reached by turning back floor covering.
  12. Remove right-side trim for center console -1-.
  13. To remove, slide trim forward and unhook from back.
  14. Pull up parking brake lever as far as possible.
  15. Pry out lock pin -2- in direction of (arrow -A-). see scheme 17
  16. Remove parking brake lever handle -1- in direction of (arrow -B-).
  17. Pry off cover -1- and loosen lock bolt (arrow) approx. 2 rotations. see scheme 18
  18. Remove trim plate for trim -2- from front.
  19. Remove parking brake trim. Note the retaining tab at the rear/narrow end of the trim.

Vehicles with manual transmission

  1. Remove shift knob and place in 4th gear.

Vehicles with center armrest

  1. Remove center armrest. See «CENTER ARMREST (THROUGH 1999)»(/audi/a8/d2-1994-1999/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#interior-equipment) .

  1. Unclip trim -2-. see scheme 20
  2. Remove screws -3-.
  3. Remove rear seat outlet -1-.
  4. Place auxiliary tool -C- in holes of instrument cluster outlets -D-. see scheme 21
  5. Remove instrument cluster outlet, center part out evenly. NOTE: Do not hook auxiliary tool -C- into fins of instrument cluster outlet (the fins could break off).
  6. Remove 5 bolts (arrows). see scheme 22
  7. Remove instrument cluster, center part -1- and disconnect connectors.
  8. Remove bolts -4- left and right.
  9. Press ashtray -1- toward front.
  10. Remove screws -3-.
  11. Using sharp knife, separate, where necessary, adhesive between center console -2- and instrument panel.
  12. Raise rear center console and guide to front over parking brake lever.

Instrument panel (center), removing and installing

  1. Make auxiliary tool for disassembly of outlet.
  2. Bend wire of 3 mm diameter as shown in illustration. Dimension -x- = 6 mm

  4. Position seats all the way back.

  6. Turn accelerator pedal stop 1/4 revolution (90°) further.
  7. Remove screws -1- and -2-. see scheme 26
  8. Remove left-side trim for center console -3-. To remove, slide trim forward and unhook from back.
  9. Remove screws -2- and -3-. see scheme 27 The front screws -2- can be reached by turning back floor covering.
  10. Remove right-side trim for center console -1-. To remove, slide trim forward and unhook from back.
  11. Place auxiliary tool -C- in holes of instrument cluster outlets -D-.
  12. Remove instrument cluster outlet out center part evenly. NOTE: Do not hook auxiliary tool -C- into fins of instrument cluster outlet (the fins could break off).
  13. Remove 5 bolts (arrows).
  14. Pull instrument cluster, center part -1- out slightly.
  15. Pull off wires and separate connectors.
  16. Remove instrument cluster, center.
  17. Remove control module for operating electronics, navigation -J401-.   3. Create cutouts and holes in center console, as shown in the illustration.

Disconnecting connector for telephone

  1. Press buttons (arrows) and disconnect connector for telephone -1-.

Removing vent console

  1. Remove trim plate -2-.
  2. Remove bolts -3-.
  3. Remove vent console -1-.
  4. Disconnect harness connector.

Removing center console cover

  1. Pry off cover -1- at cut-out -2-.

Disconnecting connector for lighting

  1. Pull cable out of cut-out.
  2. Disconnect harness connector -1-. For vehicles without telephone, there are two harness connectors -1-.

Support foot cover, removing and installing

  1. Bring armrest -1- into 75° lock position (arrow -A-). see scheme 40
  2. Pull up (arrow -B-) cover -3- first.
  3. Remove cover -3- from support foot -2- toward front (arrow -C-).

Center armrest trim plate, removing and installing

  1. Using flathead screwdriver against pin -2- (6x left and right) lift out inner and outer trim plate beginning at rear.
  2. Remove trim plate -1-.

Center armrest storage compartment, removing and installing

  2. Remove bolts -1-.

Storage compartment without lift

  1. Remove stowage compartment -2- in upward direction. see scheme 43
  2. Remove adhesive tape -3-.
  3. Remove lighting -1- from storage compartment.

  1. Telephone cable Disconnect telephone cable -1- from socket -3- in storage compartment -2-. Unclip telephone cable -1- from clip -6- on support bracket -4-. Push telephone cable -1- along at support bracket -4- and carefully remove storage compartment -2- in forward direction. Slide telephone connector cable -3- downward out of mounting -5- from storage compartment -2-. Remove storage compartment -2- complete with lift.

Center armrest cover, removing and installing

  1. Starting at bottom, carefully unclip cover -1- in direction of (arrow -A-). see scheme 55
  2. Remove cover -1- in direction of (arrow -B-). NOTE: When installing, ensure that lid is fully engaged so center armrest cover can be properly mounted.

Fitting and removing outer covering of center armrest cover

Note. When removing arm rest covering, begin at the rear. Remove center armrest cover. See CENTER ARMREST COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING . Using flat head screwdriver, remove armrest release/catch device -1- out sideways. Completely remove plastic strip -2-. Unhook clamping strip -3-.

Install in reverse order of removal.

Note. After installing the outer covering, carefully smooth away the folds in the leather using a heat gun.

Lower section of center armrest outer covering, removing and installing

  1. When installing mirror -1-, rotate mirror 60-90°, install onto installation point (arrow -A-) and turn in direction of arrows -B- until locking springs engage.

Rearview mirror (roof mounted), removing and installing

Note. The following list refers to see scheme 62.

  1. Rearview mirror Removing Unclip molded headliner cover -7- at front. Disconnect harness connector -4- to rearview mirror. Using a screwdriver on the left side, pry out rearview mirror between base plate -5- and mirror base -3-. Installing: Check whether locking pin -8- is locked before installing. Insert right side of mirror base -3-. Clip in mirror base cover -2- on right side. Press up mirror base cover -2- on left side along with mirror base -3- until locking pin -8- engages.

Test requirements

Test procedure

  1. Hold photosensor closed on front side (or tape).
  2. Radiate photosensor on back side using light source (flash light).
  1. The interior rearview mirror must dim within a short time.
  1. Glass-metal-adhesive-set D 000 703 A1

Work procedure

  1. Remove mirror plate from mirror base.
  2. Remove PUR-adhesive material with wire brush from mirror plate.
  3. Grind off spacer knobs from adhesive surface. Sand paper (360/400 grade) on flat surface.
  4. Keep ground surface dirt and grease free.
  5. Scrape PUR-adhesive material and primer up to ceramic layer with glass scraper off of windshield.
  6. Clean adhesive surface with adhesive remover D 002 000 10 or cleaning solution D 009 401 04. CAUTION: Ceramic layer should not be damaged. Scratches are always visible.
  7. Cut nylon mesh weave to exact size of mirror base. NOTE: Hands should be protected (rubber gloves).
  8. Apply adhesive evenly on mirror base.
  9. Place nylon mesh weave on mirror base.
  10. Using tube, dab adhesive on nylon mesh adhesive. From the positioning of the nylon mesh weave onto adhesive until it is pressed on to windshield there are only 30 seconds available.
  11. Press mirror base securely for 15 seconds (not with force) to windshield.
  12. Remove excess adhesive using cloth. NOTE: After 15 minutes the rearview mirror can be installed. CAUTION: Work with adhesive material at room temperature and note safety and use specifications. The complete hardening of material occurs after several hours.
  13. Measurement for interior rearview mirror -a- = 140 mm (upper edge front glass up to center of adhesive plate mirror base).
