Notes on exchanging instrument cluster
- Do not disassemble instrument cluster.
- When the replacement of a malfunctioning instrument cluster is necessary, follow exchange part procedures.
- Complete report form and return together with inst. cluster.
- Use the original packaging from the new cluster when returning modules.

- The odometer reading must be adapted to the new/exchange instrument cluster using the VAS 5051 tester See «VAS 5051 TESTER, CONNECTING»(ref-196304-S07611429162005100900000) .

Malfunction message "dEF" on trip odometer display
If the control module in the instrument cluster detects a malfunction in its permanent memory, the letters "dEF" will appear on the trip odometer display.
- If "dEF" is indicated on display, replace instrument cluster. See «INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(ref-196300-S29162299302005100900000) .
Instrument cluster, removing and installing
| CAUTION | Before beginning repairs on the electrical system: Obtain the anti-theft radio security code. Switch off all electrical consumers. Switch ignition off and remove ignition key. Disconnect negative (-) battery terminal. On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar(R), switch-off the emergency (back-up) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module prior to disconnecting vehicle battery. See EMERGENCY (BACK-UP) BATTERY, SWITCH ON/OFF, RESET TIME REGISTER . After reconnecting vehicle battery, re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio. Also check operation of clock and power windows according to Repair Manual and/or Owner's Manual. After reconnecting vehicle battery on vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar(R), switch-on the emergency (back-up) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module. Removing
Note. It is not necessary to remove the steering wheel to remove the instrument cluster.
If replacing a malfunctioning instrument cluster with a new one, note odometer reading on existing cluster prior to removal.
- Determine input values for replacing instrument cluster (i.e.: SRI values etc. where applicable): See «INPUT VALUES FOR REPLACING INSTRUMENT CLUSTER»(ref-196304-S09471942522005100900000) .
- Adjust steering wheel completely out and downward.
- Press cover -1- upward at side and then remove cover from instrument panel.
- Remove Phillips head screws -1-.
- Pull out instrument cluster toward front.
- Cut cable ties at rear of instrument cluster.
- Unclip securing latches of connectors and disconnect connectors.
Installing
Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following
- Connect electrical harness connectors and affix wiring harness to rear of instrument cluster with cable ties.
- After installation, perform a function test of the instrument cluster.
- If the function test is OK, enter the input values for the instrument cluster (i.e.: SRI etc. where applicable): See «INPUT VALUES FOR REPLACING INSTRUMENT CLUSTER»(ref-196304-S09471942522005100900000) .
- Code instrument cluster according to market and equipment versions using the VAS 5051 tester See «VAS 5051 TESTER, CONNECTING»(ref-196304-S07611429162005100900000) .

Vehicles with front wheel drive
Sender for fuel gauge is located below the floor cover of the luggage compartment.
- Unscrew cover for connector flange below the luggage compartment carpet. NOTE: To do so, remove luggage compartment floor on the Avant. See «CARGO AREA FLOOR TRIM AND SUPPORTS (AVANT), REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(ref-196286-S22068532592005100800000) .
- Carefully disengage and disconnect 4-pin harness connector (arrow).

Vehicles with all wheel drive
For vehicles with all wheel drive, the three senders for fuel gauge are connected in sequence.
- The central connector for all sensors is located on right below the rear seat bench.
- Remove rear seat bench. See «SEAT BENCH, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(ref-196287-S04747218032005100800000) .
- Unscrew cover for connector flange at right beneath rear seat bench
- Carefully disengage and disconnect 4-pin harness connector (arrow).

Consumption signal, checking (engine at powertrain CAN-bus)
Note. On some engines, the consumption signal is transferred from the Engine Control Module (ECM) to the instrument cluster via the powertrain CAN-bus. Malfunctions in the communication between Engine Control Module (ECM) and instrument cluster can only be detected via On Board Diagnostic (OBD) (DTC 01312 and 01314).
