DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
The power window system consists of control panel (located in driver's armrest) 3 remote operating switches, individual window motor/modules, wiring harness and connectors. Mechanical components include a regulator, carrier assembly and window hardware. (Scheme 1) Each power window has a separate control module that is integrated into each power window motor to control each window's functions separately.
The power windows can be operated at all times when ignition is in the ON position. After ignition is turned off, the power windows can be operated until either front door is opened. The control panel, located in the driver's armrest, operates all windows. The rear windows will operate only when the safety switch in control panel is deactivated.
All windows feature an "express" feature. When any window switch is pressed momentarily in the up or down position, window will move to full open or full closed position without having to hold switch down.
All windows can be opened or closed used ignition key in door lock. Opening windows can be accomplished by holding key in unlock position until all windows are opened to desired position. Closing windows can be accomplished by holding key in lock position until all windows are closed to desired position.

SAFETY LOCKOUT SWITCH
Remove safety lockout switch and disconnect harness connector. Check continuity between switch terminals with switch in appropriate position. See SAFETY LOCKOUT SWITCH TEST table. (Scheme 2) If continuity is not as specified, replace safety lockout switch.
| Switch Position | Check Continuity Between Terminals No. | Specification |
|---|---|---|
| Off | 2 & 3 | No Continuity |
| On | 2 & 3 | Continuity |

WINDOW SWITCHES
- Remove window switch to be tested and disconnect harness connector. Check continuity between switch terminals with switch in appropriate position. See «POWER WINDOW SWITCH TEST»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/windows/#power-windows) table. (Scheme 3) If continuity is not as specified, replace window switch.
- After installation of new components or disconnecting and reconnecting battery, run power window to fully closed position. Release switch. With window fully closed, press switch in up position again for one second. This will reactivate the "express" feature.
| Switch Position | Check For Continuity Between Terminals No. |
|---|---|
| Up | 1 & 4 |
| Neutral | (1) 2 & 5; 1 & 3 |
| Down | 2 & 4 |
| (1) No continuity should exist between terminals No. 2 and 4, and terminals No. 1 and 4. | |
| (1) | No continuity should exist between terminals No. 2 and 4, and terminals No. 1 and 4. |

POWER WINDOW MOTOR/MODULE & REGULATOR
Note. Power window motor can be removed from regulator with regulator installed and window in any position.
Note. After installation of new components or disconnecting and reconnecting battery, run power window to fully closed position. Release switch. With window fully closed, press switch in up position again for one second. This will reactivate the "express" feature.
Removal & Installation (A4)
- Remove trim cover from beneath pull handle and remove 3 Torx screws. Remove screw from top rear of door panel. Lift door panel up to disengage retainers. Disconnect inside door handle release cable from door panel. Disconnect remaining electrical connectors from door panel. Remove door panel from vehicle.
- Remove kick panel and disconnect vacuum and electrical connectors located at "A" pillar. Disconnect rubber boot between door and "A" pillar and pull vacuum hoses and harness from vehicle into door. Mark position of carrier in relationship to door. Remove 4 bolts attaching door carrier assembly to door. (Scheme 5) Lift door carrier assembly up and out of door using care not to scratch finish.
- To remove regulator and motor assembly, go to next step. To remove motor, remove window motor mounting screws. (Scheme 4) Disconnect harness connector. Pry motor out of carrier assembly. To install motor, reverse removal procedure. Tighten mounting screws to 40 INCH lbs. (4.5 N.m).
- Drill out rivets attaching regulator to door carrier assembly and detach regulator. Note different sizes of pop rivets for proper installation. To install regulator and motor assembly, reverse removal procedure installing rivets in correct order. (Scheme 6)

Removal & Installation (A6)
- Remove screws from top ends of door panel. Remove corresponding power window switch. See «POWER WINDOW SWITCH»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/windows/#power-windows__power-window-switch). Lift door panel up to disengage retainers. Disconnect inside door handle release cable from door panel. Disconnect remaining electrical connectors from door panel. Remove door panel from vehicle.
- Unclip harness connectors from door carrier assembly.
(Scheme 7)

POWER WINDOW SWITCH
Note. After installation of new components or disconnecting and reconnecting battery, run power window to fully closed position. Release switch. With window fully closed, press switch in up position again for one second. This will reactivate the "express" feature.
Remove trim cover from beneath pull handle and remove 3 Torx screws. Remove screw from top rear of door panel. Lift door panel up to disengage retainers. Disconnect inside door handle release cable from door panel. Disconnect remaining electrical connectors from door panel. Remove door panel from vehicle. Turn door panel over and use small, flat-bladed screwdriver to depress locking tabs on window switch or central door locking switch. Remove switch from switch panel. To install, reverse removal procedure.
On driver's front door, remove screw attaching power window switch from below interior door grab handle. After removing screw, use screwdriver to pry switch upward through hole for retainer screw. (Scheme 8) On all other doors, use flat tipped screwdriver to pry switch from top edge. Disconnect electrical connectors from switch and remove switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
