A/C Control Head -E87-, coding

Note. The basis setting must be carried out after each coding procedure. See BASIC SETTING (FUNCTION 04) . If a new control head is installed and its display panel flashes (for about 2 minutes) when the ignition is switched on, code the A/C control head and carry out basic setting. With model year change 2001 to 2002 the A/C system control will be changed over. For Audi allroad, the changeover of the A/C system is not performed with the model year change 2001 to 2002, instead it is a running change (implementation open, for vehicles with 4.2 Liter engine with start of production).

Note. Follow coding procedure exactly when replacing an A/C control head -E87-. A/C control head -E87- varies for vehicles with and without radio navigation system (or a radio with a large control panel), with and without switch for heated seats (e.g. index "B", "C", "F" or "G"). Between the 36th and 44th week of 1998 the production of climate control unit model "1" has been converted to climate control model "2". Both versions can be differentiated on certain marks. See CHARACTERISTICS OF AIR CONDITIONER VERSIONS 1 AND 2 . Vehicles with 8 cylinder engines only have climate control units models "2". A/C Control Heads -E87 with part number and index "AE", "AF", "AG" and "AH" are permissible or can be installed in vehicles with climate control unit model "2" up to model year 2001 See CHARACTERISTICS OF AIR CONDITIONER VERSIONS 1 AND 2 . A/C Control Heads -E87- with part number and index "H", "J", "K" "L" or "AG", "AH", "AE", "AF" are only permissible or can be installed on vehicles with model year 2000 and 2001. Those A/C Control Heads differ in the following points from A/C Control Heads -E87- with part number 4B0 820 043 and index "P", "Q", "R" or "S": Assignment recognition of ignition key (display in display group 11 of measuring value block). Display of last 4 compressor switch-off conditions (in display group 13 of measuring value block) A/C Control Heads -E87- with part number and index "H", "J", "K" "L" or "AG", "AH", "AE", "AF" can be installed on vehicles with model year 1999 with climate control unit model "2". An ignition key assignment is generally not possible, because the pertaining information is not transmitted from most instrument clusters. A/C Control Heads -E87- with part numbers and index "P', "Q", "R" or "S" cannot be installed on vehicle starting with model year 2000. They can only be installed on vehicles with model year 1999 and climate control module "2". See CHARACTERISTICS OF AIR CONDITIONER VERSIONS 1 AND 2 . A/C Control Heads -E87- with part number and index "AA", "AB", "AC" "AD" or from "AJ" should not be installed on vehicles up to model year 2001. The climate control conversion on the Audi allroad does not occur with the 2001 to 2002 model year change, but instead changes in model year 2002.

Scheme 131: A/C Control Head -E87- for vehicles up to model year 2001

Note. Follow coding procedure exactly when replacing an A/C control head -E87- . See A/C CONTROL HEAD -E87-, CODING . Meaning of the individual digits in the coding (e.g. 00140): 0 = unallocated 0 = unallocated 1 = USA 4 = Vehicles with 4-cylinder engine 0 = Vehicle with left hand steering and gas engine The main coding differences between "Rest of World" and "USA" or "Japan" are the following: USA = Temperature display in °F before °C. Japan = the function "manual switched recirculation operation" is not canceled when ignition is switched off.

WARNINGNot permissible for USA The climate control conversion on the Audi allroad does not occur with the 2001 to 2002 model year change, but as a running change in model year 2002.

Scheme 132

Scheme 132: A/C Control Head -E87- for vehicles from model year 2002

Note. Follow coding procedure exactly when replacing an A/C control head -E87-. See A/C CONTROL HEAD -E87-, CODING . Meaning of the individual digits in the coding (e.g. "00010"): 0 = Unallocated 0 = Vehicles without heated front windshield 0 = Vehicles with compressor with A/C Clutch -N25- 1 = USA 0 = Vehicles with left hand steering, with gas engine (with auxiliary heating) and therefore with climate control with 6 actuator motors (with Sensor for air quality -G238-) A heated front windshield is not offered at start of production, heated windshield is still open as an option. The compressor type (with A/C Clutch -N25- or A/C Compressor Regulator Valve -N280-). Vehicles with engines equipped with compressors with A/C Compressor Regulator Valve -N280- at the beginning of production: 2.0 liter gas engine and 3.0 liter gas engine. See COMPRESSOR, WITH A/C COMPRESSOR REGULATOR VALVE -N280 . On vehicles with A/C Compressor Regulator Valve -N280- there also an Evaporator Vent Temperature Sensor -G263 installed. See A/C SYSTEM COMPONENTS (IN PASSENGER COMPARTMENT) . The A/C Control Head -E87- uses the measuring value of the Evaporator Vent Temperature Sensor -G263- to control the temperature of the evaporator via the A/C Compressor Regulator Valve -N280-. Vehicles that are produced in China, have to coded like the vehicles that were produced up to model year 2001. The climate control conversion on the Audi allroad does not occur with the 2001 to 2002 model year change, but instead changes in model year 2002. For Audi allroad, the change-over of the A/C system is not performed with the model year change 2001 to 2002, instead it is a running change (implementation open, for vehicles with 4.2 Liter engine with start of production). Check coding of -E87-. See A/C CONTROL HEAD -E87-, CODING and EQUIPMENT/ACTIVATION TABLE (VEHICLES FROM M.Y. 2002) .

WARNINGThe main coding differences between "Rest of World" and "USA" or "Japan" are the following: USA = the control of A/C Control Head -E87- has been adjusted a little cooler than the Rest of World and the temperature display occurs in °F before °C. Japan = the function "manual switched recirculation operation" is not canceled when ignition is switched off.

Not permissible for USA

  1. On vehicles with left hand steering is the Air Flow Flap Motor -V71 installed. See «A/C SYSTEM COMPONENTS (IN PASSENGER COMPARTMENT)»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#air-conditioning__ac-system-components-in-passenger-compartment) . This component is for right hand steering (not applicable in USA) is not activated or checked by the A/C Control Head -E87 .
  2. When coding a vehicle with Diesel (not for USA) engine at low outside temperatures a request for auxiliary heating is made to the engine control module (depending on engine type via CAN-bus system or via own connection. When coding a gas engine this request will not be released .
  3. The data exchange with the instrument cluster control module (and a certain engine control module) occurs via the CAN-bus system, coding the cylinders of the engine is therefore no longer necessary .

Scheme 133

Scheme 133: Equipment/Activation table (vehicles from m.y. 2002)

Note. The activation occurs continuously on vehicles were the coolant fan is activated by the engine control module. The fan activation depends on the engine. The activation occurs via 2 steps, on vehicles where the coolant fan is activated from the A/C Control Head -E87- (via 2 outputs) via Coolant Fan control (FC) Relay -J26- and Second Speed Coolant Fan Control (FC) Relay -J101- or Coolant FC (Fan Control) Control Module -J293-. The fan activation depends on the engine. On vehicles where the A/C Control Head -E87- communicates data with the engine control module via the CAN-bus system, the -E87- exchanges, receives or sends the following data from CAN-bus: Engine speed, coolant temperature, compressor on/off, compressor switch-off or reduction of compressor output from engine control module, idle speed increase, driver input, coolant fan control (not on Diesel engine, separate wires are available). On vehicles where the A/C Control Head -E87- does not exchange data with the engine control module via the CAN-bus system, the -E87- receives the following data from CAN-bus: the engine speed, time period with ignition off and engine coolant temperature. The information "compressor on or off", compressor switch-off from engine control module, idle speed increase, driver input and coolant control are supplied via separate wiring from -E87-. Vehicles that are produced in China (not for USA) have to be coded like the vehicles that were produced up to model year 2001. For Audi Allroad, the change-over of the A/C system is not performed with the model year change 2001 to 2002, instead it is a running change (implementation open, for vehicles with 4.2 Liter engine however, with start of production). For Audi Allroad with 4.2 Liter engine, the compressor is driven via a shaft rather than a belt
