Glove box, removing and installing

The following list pertains to (Scheme 3).

  1. Glove box Removing Open glove box lid. Remove screws -3- (3x). Remove screws -4- (2x). Remove glove box downward. Disconnect connector -2-. Installing Position strip -5- with rubber studs -6- against instrument panel -7- from underneath and install glove box.

Glove box lock, removing and installing

  1. Remove glove box lid. See «GLOVE BOX LID, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment).
  2. Remove screw -1- (4x). Tightening torque: 1 Nm (9 in. lb)
  3. Use screwdriver to pry open glove box lid -3- slightly on inside (at arrow -A-). (Scheme 4)
  4. Pull trim panel -2- approx. 15 mm out of retainers -4- (3x) in direction of arrow -A-. (Scheme 4)
  5. Lift trim panel -2- approx. 15 mm and detach trim panel -2- from glove box lid -3-.
  6. Use screwdriver -2- to pry off glove box opening mechanism -1- on left and right in direction of arrow. (Scheme 5)
  7. Remove glove box opening mechanism -1-.
  8. Use screwdriver -3- to pry bracket -2- on left and right side out of glove box opening mechanism -1- in direction of arrow.

Note. Lock cylinder can only be removed with key inserted.

Removing

  1. Use screwdriver to carefully pry off retaining lugs -1- (4x) in direction of arrow and at the same time press lock cylinder -2- in direction of arrow.

Installing

  1. With key inserted, press in lock cylinder until all retaining lugs engage.

  1. Remove glove box. See «STORAGE COMPARTMENTS, COVERS AND TRIM PARTS»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment) .
  2. Press out pin -1- at connection between damping mechanism -2- and glove box lid -3-.
  3. Open glove box lid. Holes are provided at the hinges on the inside of the glove box on each side.
  4. Use 4 mm punch to drive pin -2- on left and right out of glove box -1-.
  5. Remove glove box lid.

Glove box lid damping mechanism, removing

  1. Remove glove box. See «STORAGE COMPARTMENTS, COVERS AND TRIM PARTS»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment) .
  2. Press out pin -1- at connection between damping mechanism -2- and glove box lid -3- in direction of arrow.
  3. Turn damping mechanism for glove box lid -1- through approx. 90 °C into opening -2- and remove damping mechanism.

Driver's storage compartment, removing

The following list pertains to (Scheme 12).

  1. Driver's storage compartment Remove instrument cluster molding. See «INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MOLDING, REMOVING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment__instrument-cluster-molding-removing) . Unclip end trim of instrument panel on driver's side. See «REMOVING INSTRUMENT PANEL END TRIM (LEFT)»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim__removing-instrument-panel-end-trim-left) . Remove bolts -2- (5x). Set down driver's storage compartment. Disconnect connector -3- from footwell light -4-. Unclip Data Link Connector (DLC) -6- by squeezing together the tabs -5- (3x).

Instrument cluster molding, removing

  1. Pull out instrument cluster molding -1- to rear.

Center console (rear section), removing and installing

The following list pertains to see scheme 12.

  1. Rear section of center console Removing Remove rear air vent and rear air-duct connecting piece. Remove bolt -8-. With manual transmission: Twist off shifter knob -4-. Unclip protective boot -5-upward. Unclip center console insert -6- upward. With automatic transmission: Unclip center console insert -6- upward. Remove bolts -7- (2x). Remove parking brake pry trim. Raise rear section of center console -1- at front and detach connector for mirror adjustment switch -9- Pull parking brake pry up as far as it will go. Unfasten trim -10- from retainer -11- on parking brake pry. Raise rear section of center console -1- over stud -12- and pull center console to rear. Lift out rear section of center console -1- forward over parking brake pry. Installing Install trim -10- at retainer -11- on parking brake pry. Make sure air ducts are properly installed when installing rear section of center console -1

  1. Side trim strip Unclip side trim strip -1- upward. Rear trim panel Vehicles with center armrest: Remove center armrest. Pay attention to screw length. Raise front of tray and pull tray out of trim panel -2- at rear. If necessary, lift trim panel -2- at rear.
  2. Tray with cassette box Remove mat lining -9-. Remove screw -4-. Pay attention to screw length. Raise front of tray and pull tray out of trim panel -2- at rear. If necessary, lift trim panel -2- at rear. Tray with telephone holder Remove mat lining -9-. Remove screw -4-. Pay attention to screw length. Disconnect connector for telephone. Remove bracket -8-. Raise front of tray and pull tray out of trim panel -2- at rear. If necessary, lift trim panel -2- at rear. Small tray Remove rear section of center console and release retainer tabs (4x).   2. With parking brake -3- released, install parking brake trim -2- in center console -5-.
  3. Pull on parking brake -3-.
  4. Finish tightening bolt -1-.
  5. Clip in trim panel -4-.

Parking brake trim, removing

  1. Remove rear section of center console. See «CENTER CONSOLE (REAR SECTION), REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment__center-console-rear-section-removing-and) .
  2. Fold parking brake trim -1- upward -arrow-.
  3. Squeeze tabs -2- together and disengage from lugs -3-.

Parking brake bracket trim, removing and installing

  1. Pull on parking brake -4-.
  2. Remove parking brake pry trim. See «PARKING BRAKE TRIM, REMOVING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment__parking-brake-trim-removing) .
  3. Remove parking brake handle. See «PARKING BRAKE HANDLE, REMOVING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment__parking-brake-handle-removing) .
  4. Pull off parking brake bracket trim -1- to front. When installing, make sure retainer -2- engages in groove -3-.

Parking brake handle, removing

  1. Pry off locking pin -2- in direction of -arrow A-.
  2. Pull off parking brake handle -1- in direction of -arrow B-.

Rear vent and rear air-duct connecting piece, removing

  1. Use a suitable tool (fabricate and create in workshop: screwdriver bent through 90°, 6-10 mm) to pull rear vent -1- out of rear section of center console.
  2. Disconnect connectors for cigarette lighter, vent light and rear heated seat.
  3. Pull rear air-duct connecting piece -2- off air duct -3-.

Vent outlet trim, removing

  1. Remove vent outlet. See «REAR VENT AND REAR AIR-DUCT CONNECTING PIECE, REMOVING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment__rear-vent-and-rear-air-duct-connecting) .
  2. Pull springs -2- (4x) back approx. 2 mm.
  3. Press retaining tabs -3- (4x) and remove trim -1-.
  4. When installing, be sure that the springs -2- are below retaining tabs -3-.

Center armrest, removing and installing

The following list pertains to see scheme 20.

  1. Center armrest Remove rear vent and rear air-duct connecting piece. See «REAR VENT AND REAR AIR-DUCT CONNECTING PIECE, REMOVING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment__rear-vent-and-rear-air-duct-connecting) . On center armrest with telephone, disconnect connector -2- by squeezing retainer tabs -3-. Remove nut -4-. Remove center armrest -1-. When installing, clamp in connector -2- on right-hand side between support bracket and center console.

Support bracket for center armrest, removing

  2. Remove rear section of center console. See «CENTER CONSOLE (REAR SECTION), REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment__center-console-rear-section-removing-and) .
  3. Remove nuts -2- (2x).
  4. Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7 ft lb)
  5. Remove support bracket -1-.

Center armrest, retrofitting

  1. Remove rear section of center console. See «CENTER CONSOLE (REAR SECTION), REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment__center-console-rear-section-removing-and) .
  2. Install support bracket for center armrest. See «SUPPORT BRACKET FOR CENTER ARMREST, REMOVING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment__support-bracket-for-center-armrest-removing) .
  3. Remove rear trim panel without cut-out for center armrest and replace with one incorporating cut-out for center armrest. See «SIDE TRIM STRIP, REAR TRIM PANEL AND TRAY, REMOVING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment__side-trim-strip-rear-trim-panel) , Item 2.

Car telephone / mobile phone lift mechanism in center armrest, removing and installing

The following list pertains to see scheme 22.

  1. Center armrest NOTE: For clarity, illustration shows components removed from vehicle and without cover.
  2. Lift mechanism for car telephone / mobile phone Removing Release lift mechanism -2-. Warm bolts -5- using a soldering iron until smoke rises and then loosen the bolts with a jolt. Remove bolts -5- (4x). Installing Always use new bolts.
  3. Carrier for mobile phone Removing Remove center armrest. See «CENTER ARMREST, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment__center-armrest-removing-and-installing) . Remove right-hand hinge trim. See «SIDE HINGE TRIM, REMOVING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment__side-hinge-trim-removing) . Release wire -6- from mounts -7- and -8-. Pull wire -6- through to the inside together with connector -9-. Installing Make sure that wire -6- is not trapped.
  4. Release catch for lift mechanism Removing Use a screwdriver to pry out release catch -4- at the top. Press out release catch -4- at the bottom. Installing Insert at the bottom first.
  5. Bolts (4x) Before removing, warm bolts -5- using a soldering iron until smoke rises and then loosen the bolts with a jolt. Always replace. Before installing new bolts, clean out threads in threaded inserts (retap). Tightening torque: 2 Nm (18 in. lb)

Side hinge trim, removing

  1. Remove rubber insert -2-. When installing, note position of slot -4-.
  2. Pry off hinge trim -1- carefully using a screwdriver -3-.

Wire and connector for telephone, removing

  1. Release wire -2- from mounts -3- and -4-.
  2. Using a screwdriver, pry connector -1- from underneath in direction of arrow.
  3. When installing, insert retainer lugs -5- first.

Center console (front section), removing and installing

Cup holder and storage compartment, removing

  2. Insert radio assembly tool at retainer tabs -2- (2x) and pull out cup holder/storage compartment -1-.
  3. Disconnect connectors for storage compartment and cup holder.

Center console insert, removing

The following pertains to see scheme 29.

  1. Manual transmission: Twist off shifter knob-1-. Unclip protective boot -2- upward. Unclip center console insert -3-upward. Automatic transmission: Move selector pry to one of the rear positions. Unclip center console insert -3- upward.

Radio flap, removing

Scheme 7: Front ashtray (vehicles with "Chorus" and "Concert" radios), removing and installing

  2. Unclip center console insert -2-. See «CENTER CONSOLE INSERT, REMOVING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment__center-console-insert-removing) .
  3. Open front ashtray
  4. Remove bolts-1- (2x). Tightening torque: 2 Nm (18 in. lb)
  5. Using a screwdriver -2-, pull out retainers -1- on left and right in direction of arrow.
  6. Carefully pull A/C control head out slightly toward the rear, and pull out ashtray downward and toward the rear.
  7. Pull ashtray toward the rear and disconnect wires for cigarette lighter and ashtray light.
  8. When installing, make sure that guides -1- engage in center console on left and right sides.

Front ashtray (vehicles with "Symphony" radios and "radio-navigation plus"), removing

  1. Remove radio for "Symphony" radio system. See «"SYMPHONY" RADIO, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/communication-devices/#radio-telephone-navigation-trip-computer__symphony-radio-removing-and-installing) .
  2. Remove operating electronics and telephone control module -J412- for "plus" radio navigation system. See «RADIO, TELEPHONE, NAVIGATION, TRIP COMPUTER»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/communication-devices/#radio-telephone-navigation-trip-computer)

  4. Press retaining tabs -2- and pull ashtray out forward.
  5. Disconnect harness connectors.

Front ashtray trim, removing

  1. Open front ashtray.
  2. Remove front ashtray. See «FRONT ASHTRAY (VEHICLES WITH "CHORUS" AND "CONCERT" RADIOS), REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment) .
  3. Use screwdriver to press up retainer tabs -1- (2x) and remove trim -2- forward.

Front cigarette lighter, removing and installing

  1. Remove front ashtray. See «FRONT ASHTRAY (VEHICLES WITH "CHORUS" AND "CONCERT" RADIOS), REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment). NOTE: Components are shown disassembled for greater clarity.
  2. Disconnect connector -2- by squeezing together retainers -3-. see scheme 37
  3. Remove spring -1-.
  4. Press cigarette lighter -1- inward slightly.
  5. Using a screwdriver, pry off pegs -2- on left and right sides. see scheme 38
  6. Pry out pry -4- behind retainer -3-.

Gear knob in Sport version

Arrow points in direction of travel.

Removal

  1. Release the gear lever boot -2- by lifting the clip. see scheme 39
  2. Rotate the gear lever boot -2- under the gear knob -1- by 45° counterclockwise.
  3. Remove the gear knob -1- together with the gear lever boot -2- by pulling it upward.

Installation

  1. Press the gear knob -1- into the drive position on the gear shift lever. see scheme 39
  2. Rotate the gear lever boot -2- under the gear knob -1- by 45° clockwise.
  3. Clip the gear lever boot -2- on.

Gear knob in Standard version

The figure shows the gear lever boot inside out.

  1. Release the gear lever boot -1- by lifting the clip. see scheme 40
  2. Turn the gear lever boot -1- inside out by pulling it upward.
  3. Rotate the locking device -2- by 45° clockwise.
  4. Remove the gear knob together with the gear lever boot -1- by pulling it upward.

  2. Rotate the locking device -2- under the gear knob by 45° counterclockwise. see scheme 40
  3. Clip the gear lever boot -1- on.
  1. When removing, rotate mirror -1- 60 to 90°, -arrows B-, until retaining spring releases and remove mirror -arrow A-.

  1. When installing, place mirror -1- at an angle of 60-90° to final position -arrow A- and then turn mirror -arrows B- until locking spring clicks into place.
  1. Unclip cable channel cover -3-.
  2. Remove connector from retainer and disconnect. NOTE: Do not use cable channel -2- to turn mirror.
  3. When removing, rotate mirror -1- 60 to 90° -arrows B-, until retaining spring releases and remove mirror -arrow A-.

Calibration of rearview mirror with compass (USA only)

Setting of North is integrated in rearview mirror via a world-zone dependent magnetic field.

The compass directions N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W and NW are shown in the digital display.

A new rearview mirror, or a rearview mirror which has had no current for a long period of time, must be calibrated anew (nothing or a "C" appears in display).

Calibration of a new compass

  1. Switch ignition on.
  2. "C" must appear in display.
  3. If there is no "C", press adjustment switch on underside of mirror using a thin object (e.g. pencil) until "C" appears in display.
  4. Drive slowly at approx. 10 km/h around in a circle 2 to 3 times until a compass direction is displayed.
  5. Press adjustment switch on underside of mirror using a thin object (e.g. pencil) until the number of your zone appears in display.
  6. Refer to the adjacent card for your zone.
  7. A compass direction appears in the display after a few seconds.

Calibration of an already existing compass

  1. Switch ignition on.
  2. "C" must appear in display.
  3. If there is no "C", press adjustment switch on underside of mirror using a thin object (e.g. pencil) until "C" appears in display.
  4. Drive slowly at approx. 10 km/h around in a circle 2 to 3 times until a compass direction is displayed.

Zone adjustment

  1. Switch ignition on.
  2. Press adjustment switch on underside of mirror using a thin object (e.g. pencil) until the number of your zone appears in display.
  3. Refer to the adjacent card for your zone.
  4. A compass direction appears in the display after a few seconds.

Rearview mirror (automatic antiglare mirror), removing

  1. Unclip wiring cover.
  2. Pull connector out of fastener and disconnect.
  3. Press interior rear-view mirror -1-downward -arrow- at an angle off retaining plate (spring clip in mirror base).

Rearview mirror (automatic anti-glare mirror), installing

Note. Do not take hold of wiring cover -2- in order to turn mirror.

  1. When installing, install mirror -1- at an angle of 60-90° to final position -arrow A-and then turn mirror -arrows B- until locking spring clicks into place.

Automatic anti-glare rearview mirror, testing function

Test function of mirror with mirror installed and ignition switched on; reverse gear must not be engaged.

  1. Place hand over (or mask off) front of photosensor.
  2. Shine a suitable light source onto back of photosensor.

The rearview mirror should darken quickly.

Materials

Repair method using glass-to-metal adhesive

  1. Take mirror plate out from mirror base.
  2. Remove PUR adhesive from mirror plate with wire brush.
  3. Grind off three spacer protrusions on bonding surface. To do this, use sandpaper (360/400 grit) on flat surface.
  4. Keep sanded surface clean and free of grease
  5. Scrape down PUR adhesive material and primer down to ceramic layer on windshield using glass scraper.
  6. Clean bonding area with adhesive remover D 002 000 10 or cleaning solution D 009 401 04. CAUTION: Do not damage ceramic coating. Scratches will remain permanently visible.
  7. Cut nylon mesh fabric exactly to the size of the mirror base. NOTE: Wear hand protection (rubber glove).
  8. Apply adhesive evenly and smoothly to base of mirror.
  9. Install nylon mesh fabric onto base of mirror.
  10. Apply further adhesive to nylon mesh fabric by dabbing with the tube. 30 seconds are available for applying the adhesive to the nylon mesh fabric until pressing it onto the windshield.
  11. Press base of mirror firmly (do not use force) against windshield for 15 seconds.
  12. Remove excess adhesive with a cloth. NOTE: Rearview mirror can be attached again after 15 minutes. CAUTION: Use adhesive at room temperature and observe manufacturer's safety instructions and directions for use. The material will harden fully after several hours.
  13. Positioning of rearview mirror with ball joint: distance -a- = 140 mm (top edge of windshield to center of adhesive surface of mirror base).
