Ignition coils and power output stage, checking

Note. The ignition coils and power output stage are one component. Measuring the primary resistance of the ignition coils is not possible. Measure secondary resistance first with ignition wires connected to the ignition coil via the spark plug connector of the respective cylinder (with this method the interference resistances of the ignition cables are also measured). Component locations, see COMPONENT LOCATIONS

  2. VAG1598/22 test box
  3. VW1594 connector test kit

Test conditions

  1. No fuel injector malfunction stored in DTC memory
  1. Check DTC memory. See «CHECK DTC MEMORY (SCAN TOOL FUNCTION 02)»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/testing-diagnostics/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-28l-v6-aha) . There must be no malfunctions stored
  2. If DTC memory is not clear (malfunctions recognized): Make necessary repairs and erase DTC memory. Stop engine and start engine again. Road test. Check and erase DTC memory again.
  3. Check which cylinder is misfiring, or not firing at all by briefly disconnecting fuel injector connectors with engine running.

A misfiring cylinder can also be isolated by examining the spark plugs (for a carbon -fouled plug).

  1. Interchange spark plug with one from cylinder that is OK.

If a different cylinder now misfires

  1. Replace faulty spark plug.

If the original cylinder misfires

  1. Check ignition coil. See «CHECKING IGNITION COILS -N-, -N128- AND -N158»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/ignition-system/#ignitionglow-plug-system-28l-v6-aha) .

The camshaft adjustment is dependent on engine speed and load. The electrical solenoid valves for camshaft adjustment (-N205- and -N208 -) are switched to apply oil pressure to the mechanical camshaft adjusters, which adjusts the camshaft timing.

Note. Display field 2 indicates whether the engine control module has activated the camshaft adjustment.

  1. "CS-ctrlOFF:" camshaft adjustment is not active.
  2. "CS-ctrlON:" camshaft adjustment is active (this can only be attained during a test drive)

Display fields 3 and 4 show whether the camshaft adjustment did actually occur (via input from sensors)

  1. Normal Position: -3.0° to 6.0° KW.
  2. Shifted position: 16.0° KW to 25.0° KW.

Note. If, during the test drive, display field 3 and/or 4 displays a value between 6.0° KW and 16.0° KW, the electrical valves for camshaft adjustment have switched the oil pressure to the respective mechanical camshaft adjuster, but it cannot attain the correct end position (e.g. due to sluggishness).

WARNINGA second technician is required to operate the VAG1551 scan tool during the road test. See SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .
  1. Accelerate from rest in 1st gear (manual) or with selector lever in "2" position (automatic).
  2. Check specified values for camshaft adjustment (display fields 2-4).
