Front door trim, removing and installing

The following list pertains to (Scheme 2).

1. Door trim Remove screws -2- (2x) from door trim -1-. Remove window regulator switch unit -5-. Driver's side, see «DRIVER'S WINDOW REGULATOR SWITCH, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim__drivers-window-regulator-switch-removing-and) . Passenger side, see «FRONT PASSENGER WINDOW REGULATOR SWITCH, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) . Lift door trim about 20 cm upward and remove from door. Detach Bowden cable for interior door handle, see «DETACHING BOWDEN CABLE»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim__detaching-bowden-cable) . Clip locators -3- (7x) and -4- (2x) must be clipped in place when installing door trim. When installing, press center of door trim onto door.

Detaching Bowden cable

1. Pull Bowden cable -1- out of guide -2- and detach.

Note. When installing, make sure hook -3- is facing upward

Scheme 1

Disconnecting electrical connectors

1. Disconnect connector for central locking switch -1-.
2. Disconnect connector for door warning light and anti-theft alarm -2-.
3. Disconnect connector for loudspeaker -3-.

Driver's window regulator switch, removing and installing

1. Insert screwdriver -1- in hole -2-.
2. Use screwdriver -3- to press retainer -2- in direction of arrow -A-. (Scheme 6)
3. Remove window regulator switch unit -1- in direction of arrow -B-.
4. Press retainer tab -2- and pull off connector -1-.

For vehicles with hole on underside

1. Insert screwdriver -3- in hole.
2. Use screwdriver -3- to press retainer -2- in direction of-arrow A-.
3. Remove window regulator switch unit -1- in direction of-arrow B-.

For vehicles without hole on underside

1. Mask door trim with adhesive tape -4-.
2. Use screwdriver -3- to press retainer -2- in direction of -arrow A-.
3. Remove window regulator switch unit -1- in direction of arrow.

All vehicles

1. Press retainer tab -2- and disconnect connector -1-.

Front door trim insulation, removing and installing

1. Insulation -1- must be installed all around inside door trim.
2. When removing or installing, make sure insulation -1- is not damaged by clip locators or electrical connectors.
3. Wiring cover -2
4. Press on insulation around sealing lip -3-.

Locking knob, adjusting

1. When in "locked" position, locking knob must not project from door trim (distance -a- = 0 to 2 mm below surface).

Wiring in door trim, routing

The following list pertains to (Scheme 13).

1. Wiring to locking knob guide with light for anti-theft alarm.
2. Wiring to central locking switch (driver's side only).
3. Wiring to treble loudspeaker.
4. Wiring to bass loudspeaker.
5. Wiring to door warning lights.

Door warning light and footwell light, removing and installing

1. Use screwdriver to pry out door warning light -1- from underneath and pull outward together with wiring.
2. Disconnect door warning light -1-.
3. Use screwdriver to pry out footwell light -2- from front and pull outward together with wiring.
4. Disconnect footwell light -2-.

Treble loudspeaker, removing and installing

1. Remove door trim. See «FRONT DOOR TRIM, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim__front-door-trim-removing-and-installing) .

3. Use screwdriver to detach clip -1-.
4. Remove treble loudspeaker -2-.
5. Detach wiring harness from door trim as far as bass loudspeaker.

Bass loudspeaker, removing

3. Remove screws -1- (3x). Tightening torque: 1.5 Nm (13 in lb)
4. Remove bass loudspeaker -2- and disconnect connector.

Hinged pocket assembly, removing and installing

Removing

3. Detach wiring -4- from clips -5- (2x).
4. Using a screwdriver, press in retaining lugs -2- (2x) and at the same time push out memory switch unit -1-.
5. Disconnect connector -7- from memory switch unit -1-.

Installing

1. When installing, make sure that wiring -4- is located in guide -6-.

Scheme 2

Trim cap on memory switch unit, removing and installing

2. Remove hinged pocket assembly. See «HINGED POCKET ASSEMBLY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim__hinged-pocket-assembly-removing-and-installing) .
3. Remove memory switch unit. See «MEMORY SWITCH UNIT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim) .
4. Remove screws -1- (3x). Tightening torque: 1.2 Nm (11 in lb)

1. Open flap for pre-selector/timer.
2. Using a screwdriver -D-, release catches on sides of mount -A-.
3. Carefully lift mount -A- with pre-selector/timer -C- out of flap.
4. Push pre-selector/timer -C- upward out of mount -A-.
5. Detach wire.

Note. Pre-selector/timer -C- is secured in mount -A- with two clips -B-.

1. Install mount -A-.
2. Check position of heater indicator lamp -A-.
3. Plug in connectors.
4. Install pre-selector/timer -C- in mount -A-.

Note. When installing pre-selector/timer, make sure that the wiring does not push the pre-selector/timer out of its mount. The first vehicles equipped with auxiliary heater were equipped with a preselector/timer unit with Part No. index A. If this unit is replaced with a version with Part No. index C, also replace the mount -A- (which is shaped differently). (Scheme 23)

Pre-selector/timer switch, removing and installing

1. Remove pre-selector/timer, see «PRE-SELECTOR/TIMER FOR AUXILIARY HEATER, REMOVING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim).
2. Using a screwdriver, press back retaining lugs -A-. (Scheme 24)
3. Remove switch -B-.

Note. Switch -B- is closed when the flap is open. The pre-selector/timer is deactivated when the switch is open, which prevents the settings from being altered with the buttons.

3. Detach spring -1- from guide -2-.
4. Disengage spring -arrow-.
5. Use screwdriver to press pin -1- outward as far as it will go.
6. Use long-nose pliers to pull out pin -1-.
7. Use screwdriver to press pin -1- outward as far as it will go.
8. Use long-nose pliers to pull out pin -1-.
9. Use screwdriver to pry out guide pins -1- on left and right.
10. Remove hinged pocket from mount.

1. When installing, engage gear wheel -1- in gear track -2-.

Central locking switch, removing

3. Disconnect connector -2-. see scheme 31
4. Detach wiring -4- from door trim.
5. Use screwdriver to press in retainer hooks -3- (2x), and push out central locking switch -1- toward the front.

Scheme 7

1. With door trim installed: Mask door trim with adhesive tape -2- and use screwdriver -3- to pry out trim panel -1-.
2. With door trim removed: Push out trim panel from behind by pressing retaining pins.

Interior door handle, removing

2. Use screwdriver -3- to press retainer -2- in direction of-arrow A-.
3. Remove window regulator switch unit -1- in direction of-arrow B-.

1. Mask door trim with adhesive tape -4-.
2. Use screwdriver -3- to press retainer -2- in direction of-arrow A-.
3. Remove window regulator switch unit -1- in direction of arrow.

For all vehicles

1. Press retainer tab -2- and disconnect connector -1-.

Rear door trim insulation, removing and installing

4. Detach bass loudspeaker -2- and disconnect electrical connector(s).

3. Use screwdriver to detach clip -1-.
4. Remove treble loudspeaker -2-.
5. Detach wiring harness from door trim as far as bass loudspeaker.

Trim panel in door trim, removing

With door trim installed

1. Mask door trim with adhesive tape -2- and use screwdriver -3- to pry out trim panel -1-.

With door trim removed

1. Push out trim panel from behind by pressing retaining pins.

3. Remove screw -1-.
4. Press retainers -2- (2x) and remove interior door handle from the front.

Removing steering column switch

1. Driver's side airbag unit and steering wheel removed.

1. Pull out steering column and tilt downward as far as it will go.
2. Remove screws -1- (2x). Tightening torque: 2.8 Nm (25.2 in lb)
3. Remove grip -2-.
4. Remove two Phillips-head screws -arrows-. see scheme 61 Tightening torque: 0.6 Nm (5.4 in lb)
5. Remove upper steering column switch trim -1-.

When installing, insert upper section into hooks on lower section, swivel downward and secure with screws.

Scheme 12

Disconnecting connectors for side vent lighting and temperature sensor

1. Disconnect connector -1- on left and right for side vent lighting.
2. Disconnect connector -2- for side-vent temperature sensor on left and right by squeezing together retainer tabs -3-.

Disconnecting connector for center vent lighting

1. Disconnect connector -1- for center vent lighting.
2. Pull out instrument panel toward the rear.

1. Extend photosensor by attaching a cord or cable tie.
2. Locate instrument panel and insert extension attached to photosensor.
3. Clip -1- with felt pad -2-.
4. Insert instrument panel into clips -1-, at the same time pressing it down slightly.
5. Press gently to check that instrument panel is installed properly in clips -1-.
6. Install steering column switch but do not tighten mounts.
7. Install lower section of trim -3- for steering column switch.
8. Tighten screws -2- (2x). Tightening torque: 0.6 Nm (5.4 in lb)
9. Install screw -1- but do not tighten.
10. Install self-cancelling ring and slip ring.
11. Install steering wheel.
12. Position steering column switch with lower section of trim at a distance of 3 mm from steering wheel (distance -a-).

14. Tighten socket-head bolt -2-. Tightening torque: 0.6 Nm (5 in lb)
15. Perform remaining installation steps in reverse order of removal.
