Instrument cluster, On Board Diagnostic (OBD)
| CAUTION | Before working on the electrical system |
- Determine the correct coding for the anti-theft radio.
- Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.
Technical features of the instrument cluster
The Audi A6 is equipped with an LCD driver information system.
The Auto Check system monitors the brake system, coolant temperature, fuel level and engine oil pressure.
The driver information system incorporates the following displays
- Driver information display with radio frequency and telephone data display
- Ambient temperature display
- On-board computer display
- Transmission range selector lever display for automatic transmission
The speedometer contains an LCD display for the odometer, driver information display and Service Reminder Indicator (SRI).
The indicator lamps are integrated in the speedometer and in the tachometer.
The instrument cluster is controlled by a microprocessor and has extensive On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capabilities. If malfunctions occur in any of the system components, corresponding Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) are stored in the DTC memory of the instrument cluster. These can then be identified using the VAG1551 or VAG1552 Scan Tool (ST).
Note. The following adaptation (adjustment) functions can be carried out on the instrument cluster: Adaptation of the fuel gauge sender resistance range Adaptation of the fuel consumption indicator Coding of language versions for the on-board computer and Auto Check system Adaptation of the Service Reminder Indicator (SRI) Adaptation of the odometer after replacement of the instrument cluster
Malfunction message "dEF" on trip recorder display
If the control module in the instrument cluster detects a malfunction in its permanent memory, the letters "dEF" will appear on the trip recorder display.
- If "dEF" appears on display, replace instrument cluster. See «INSTRUMENTS - UP TO 2000»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instruments-up-to-2000) .
Note. When replacing an instrument cluster: The instrument cluster must not be disassembled. All indicator lamps which have conventional bulbs can be replaced individually. See INSTRUMENTS - UP TO 2000 . If necessary, the instrument cluster can be replaced with an exchange unit. A damage report form must be completed and returned together with the faulty instrument cluster. Faulty units must always be returned in original packaging. The odometer and the service reminder indicator on the replacement instrument cluster can be adapted using the VAG1551 scan tool. See ADAPTATION (SCAN TOOL FUNCTION 10) .

Replacement of instrument cluster, input values
Note. It is important to note the following points when replacing the instrument cluster: The instrument cluster must always be coded. Before replacing the instrument cluster, make a note of the values which appear on VAG1551 scan tool in all the adaptation channels for the service reminder indicator. The values noted must be programmed into the new instrument cluster so that it can count down to when the next service is due. Make a note of the display on the odometer and enter it as explained. Even on export versions with speedometers calibrated in miles, the adaptation of the odometer in the service reminder indicator must be made in kilometers. To do this, either convert the adaptation value from miles to kilometers, or enter the adaptation value that was noted from the old instrument cluster. Conversion of miles to kilometers: miles x 1.609 = km. Kilometers are displayed in "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08, display groups 002 and 050.
The following steps must be carried out after replacing the instrument cluster
- Code instrument cluster. See «CODE CONTROL MODULE (SCAN TOOL FUNCTION 07)»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/cruise-control-systems/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-up-to-2000) .
- Reset Service Reminder Indicator (SRI) after service. See «RESETTING SERVICE REMINDER INDICATOR (SRI) AFTER A SERVICE»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/cruise-control-systems/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-up-to-2000__resetting-service-reminder-indicator-sri-after) . or
- Adapt distance remaining until next oil change service. See «ADAPTING SERVICE REMINDER INDICATOR (SRI), AFTER REPLACING INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (DISTANCE REMAINING UNTIL NEXT OIL CHANGE SERVICE)»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/cruise-control-systems/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-up-to-2000__adapting-service-reminder-indicator-sri-after) .

- Adapt time remaining until next inspection service. See «ADAPTING SERVICE REMINDER INDICATOR (SRI), AFTER REPLACING INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (TIME REMAINING UNTIL NEXT INSPECTION SERVICE)»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/cruise-control-systems/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-up-to-2000__adapting-service-reminder-indicator-sri-after) . and
- Adapt odometer display. See «ADAPTING ODOMETER DISPLAY (KILOMETERS, MILES)»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/cruise-control-systems/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-up-to-2000__adapting-odometer-display-kilometers-miles) .
After a service has been carried out the Service Reminder Indicator (SRI) must be reset accordingly.
The SRI can be reset using the adaptation function on the VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST). See ADAPTATION (SCAN TOOL FUNCTION 10) .
The SRI can also be reset using the following procedure
- Switch ignition off.
- Press reset button for trip recorder in instrument cluster and, at same time switch ignition on.
- The message "Service OIL" will appear on the trip recorder display.
- Pull out clock adjuster knob in instrument cluster and hold in position until message "Service OIL" is cancelled. The trip recorder display will now read "Service - - -".
- Press trip recorder reset button again to call up next service message. The message "Service INSP" will appear on the trip recorder display.
- Pull out clock adjuster knob in instrument cluster and hold in position until message "Service INSP" is cancelled. The trip recorder display will now read "Service -".
- Switch ignition off.
The instrument cluster is equipped with a flexible Service Reminder Indicator (SRI), that is, the instrument cluster evaluates various service requirements of the vehicle based on input quantities such as driveability or oil consumption, (not for USA)
For the standard SRI (with set intervals that could not be influenced by how the vehicle was driven) the service interval was set to 30,000 km or 12 months, and the oil change service was set to 15,000 km.
The maintenance interval extension (MIE) is capable of reproducing the functions of the standard SRI, when the limits are set correctly. The limits are variable however. The MIE is also capable of evaluating the oil temperature sensor. Adaptation channels in the VAG On Board Diagnostic (OBD) make this possible.
In countries where the standard SRE is still used, such as the USA, the following adaptation values must be entered
| Channel 42 (minimum mileage performance) | 8000 mi |
|---|---|
| Channel 43 (maximum mileage performance) | 8000 mi |
| Channel 44 (maximum time interval until next service) | 365 days |
| Channel 45 (oil quality) | 1 |
SRE VALUES WITHOUT MAINTENANCE INTERVAL EXTENSION
The instrument cluster in the Audi A6 Highline comes standard with the driver information system.
The speedometer contains an LCD display for the odometer and trip odometer. The service reminder indicator (SRI) is shown in the center display.
The warning/ indicator lights are integrated in the speedometer and tachometer.
For details about the instrument cluster, see the owner's manual.
Note. The description in this repair manual only refers to the VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST).
Malfunction message "dEF" on trip odometer display
If the control module in the instrument cluster detects a malfunction in its permanent memory, the letters "dEF" will appear on the trip odometer display.
- If "dEF" is indicated on display, replace instrument cluster. See «INSTRUMENTS - UP TO 2000»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instruments-up-to-2000) .
Notes for replacing instrument cluster
- Do not disassemble instrument cluster.
- If necessary, instrument cluster should be replaced through the exchange loop.
- Fill out a damage report form and return together with faulty instrument cluster.
- Faulty units must always be returned in original packaging.
- The odometer and the Service Reminder Indicator (SRI) on the replacement instrument cluster can be adapted using the VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST). See «VAS 5051 VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC, MEASURING AND INFORMATION SYSTEM OR VAG1551 SCAN TOOL, CONNECTING AND SELECTING FUNCTIONS»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/cruise-control-systems/#on-board-diagnostic-obd-up-to-2000) .

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) table
- The following table lists all malfunctions that can be recognized by the instrument cluster and printed out by the VAG1551 scan tool. The malfunctions are listed in order according to their 5-digit numbers.
- DTC numbers appear only on the print-out.
- Before replacing a component shown as faulty, check the wiring and connections to the component as well as the Ground (GND) connections according to wiring diagram.
- After repairs and function test of the system, DTC memory must always be checked again using the VAG1551 scan tool and erased.
- DTC memory records all static and sporadic malfunctions: If a malfunction occurs and persists for at least 2 seconds, it is identified as a static malfunction (outside temperature malfunction at least 60 seconds, coolant temperature sensor only after at least 30 minutes with engine running). If a malfunction does not occur again, it is registered as sporadic. 7SP" will appear at right on scan tool display.
- When the ignition is switched on, all existing malfunctions are automatically re-classified as sporadic malfunctions and will only register as static malfunctions if they still occur after testing.
- Sporadic malfunctions which no longer occur during 50 driving cycles (ignition on at least 5 minutes, vehicle speed 30 km/h) are erased automatically.

Data exchange between control modules, checking
Note. Data exchange between individual control modules occurs via a bus system. The term "CAN-bus" refers to a system that transports and distributes data. The wire connections between the control modules, via which data is transferred, are referred to as data wires. Data is transferred to the connected control modules serially (one after the other) across the data wires.
Checking bus system
The DTC table indicated that data exchange via the bus should be checked
- Check to be sure the multi-pin connectors of the control modules are securely connected.
- Connect the VAS5051 tester or VAG1551 scan tool.
- Switch ignition on
- Switch printer on via the print-button (indicator lamp in button lights up), (indicator lamp in button lights up).
- Press button 1 to select "Rapid data transfer" operating mode 1.

Note. The address word 00 initiates the automatic test sequence, i.e. it results in a DTC check on all OBD capable systems in the vehicle via rapid data transfer.
When a control module responds with its identification, the display indicates the number of stored errors or indicates "no malfunctions recognized".
DTCs stored in the system are indicated sequence and printed out. Then the VAG1551 scan tool sends the next address word.
If a malfunction involving " ... databus" or " ... no communication" is indicated
Automatic test sequence is over when the following indication appears on the display

- Check whether the correct control module for this vehicle is installed (part number and coding).
If the correct control modules are installed, check the CAN bus system.
Checking a "two-line bus system"
Three or more control modules are communicating across a "two-line bus system".
- Analyze the DTCs stored in the memories of the control modules.
This analysis will help you locate the cause of the line malfunction.
Example 1
From the DTCs stored in the memories, you have determined that control module 1 is not communicating with control modules 2 and 3.

Wire and component test using VAG1598/31 test box
Note. VAG1598/31 test box is designed so that it can be simultaneously connected to the wiring harness at the Engine Control Module (ECM) and also to the ECM itself. This is advantageous because electronic engine control remains fully functional (e.g. measurement of signals with engine running) when the test box is attached. Relevant test procedures note whether Engine Control Module (ECM) should also be connected to the test box or not. Use the following for the test: VAG1526 voltage tester or the VAG1715 voltage tester and the VAG1527 diode test lamp. Always use adapter cables from VAG 1594 connector test kit for connecting special tools to the VAG 1598/31 test box. Perform adaptation of Engine Control Module (ECM) to throttle valve control module after reconnecting the Engine Control Module (ECM). See appropriate Multiport Fuel Injection (MFI) article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
| WARNING | In order to avoid damaging electronic components, the appropriate measuring range must be selected before connecting measuring cables, and appropriate notes must be observed. |
- Switch ignition off.
- Remove cover of protective housing for control modules.
- Using a screwdriver, carefully pry off retaining bracket (arrow).
- Then disengage connector from control module and disconnect. see scheme 399: Prying Off ECM Retaining Bracket Using Screwdriver
- Connect VAG1598/31 test box to connector of wiring harness. Ground (GND) clip at test box (not visible in illustration) must be clipped to battery minus. Relevant test procedures note whether Engine Control Module (ECM) should also be connected to the test box.
- Perform test as described in relevant repair sequence. see scheme 400: Connecting VAG1598/31 Test Box To Connector Of Wiring Harness
- Disconnect harness connector at cruise control switch. See «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES, SERVICING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/cruise-control-systems/#lights-switches-exterior-up-to-2000__steering-column-switches-servicing).
Wire connection must be checked for short circuit to B+, Ground (GND) and for open circuit.
- Check wire connection according to wiring diagram.
- Repair open circuit or short circuit if necessary.
Cruise control switch must be replaced if wire connection is OK.
General information
When driving in reverse gear, the parking assistance system measures the distance between vehicle rear to an obstruction.
For this reason, four ultra sound sensors are installed in the rear bumper.
The sensors can be controlled in either the combined send/receive mode or in receive mode alone.
The rear sensors are switched off if a trailer hitch is attached and the trailer plug is connected.
Function
The Acoustic Parking System (APS) consists of
- Control module for parking aid -J446
- Left rear parking aid sensor -G203
- Left rear center parking aid sensor -G204
- Right rear center parking aid sensor -G205
- Right rear parking aid sensor -G206
- Warning buzzer for parking -H15
After switching ignition on, a self-test is performed that is completed in less than a second.
The control module is now permanently in operation, however the distance recognition is only activated with shifting into reverse gear.
When the parking assistance is ready, a short signal is sounded, (delay of one second for automatic vehicles due to P-D shift).
If during a self test a malfunction was detected in the system, a continuous tone will sound for 5 seconds.
The distance warning starts while driving in reverse gear from approx. 1.5 m to the obstruction. The warning consists of sound impulses with a duration of 75 ms.
The pauses between chime impulses get shorter as the gap between vehicles gets smaller. For gaps under 25 cm, the chime becomes constant, volume and pitch (frequency) can be adapted using the VAG1551. See ADAPTATION .
Special case: Driving backward along a wall
Note. The following description refers only to the VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST).

If special testing equipment is required during test drive, note the following
| WARNING | In order to avoid risk of accident during road test do the following: When reading measuring value blocks, use only the VAS 5051 or the V.A.G 1551 scan tools. Be sure scan tool is fastened securely to rear seat and operated from the rear seat by a second technician. |
To reduce the risk of personal injury and/or damage of electric and electronic components, always observe the following
- Always switch ignition off before connecting or disconnecting test/measurement tools.
- It is possible that the control module will recognize a malfunction and store a DTC during some tests. After completing all tests and repairs, DTC memory should therefore be checked and erased if necessary.
- Always switch ignition off before disconnecting or connecting battery. Failure to do so may damage a control module.
- Check fuse for function according to wiring diagram.
- Connect the VAS5051 tester or VAG1551 scan tool.

ADAPTATION CHANNEL FUNCTION - ACOUSTIC PARKING SYSTEM
The automatic vertical headlight aim control system keeps the low beams at a constant level even if the car is loaded, a situation which would normally change the headlight angle.
There are two vehicle level sensors, one on the front axle and one on the rear axle. These sensors register the vehicle's fore/aft angle of inclination.
The control module processes the vehicle speed signal, evaluates the level sensor signals and turns the headlight beam adjusting motors on when the low beams are on.
The automatic vertical headlight aim control system is required for vehicles with gas discharge (Xenon) headlights.
The automatic vertical headlight aim control system consists of
- Automatic vertical headlight aim control system control module -J431
- Left rear level control system sensor -G76
- Left front level control system sensor -G78
- Right headlight beam adjusting motor -V48
- Left headlight beam adjusting motor -V49
When starting the engine, vehicle level is measured and compared to the set point. This signal is sent to the headlight beam adjusting motors which adjust headlight position to this value once, whether or not the low beams are on.
After this single correction, signals to change low beam position will only be sent to the headlight beam adjusting motors with the low beams on.
If a trip is interrupted (vehicle speed less than 1 km/h) and a vehicle position change is recognized due to additional weight (for example, extra people in the car) the headlights will be automatically adjusted to the proper height.
All changes made by the automatic vertical headlight aim control system are due to static operating conditions.

Automatic vertical headlight aim control keeps the tilt angle of the low beams constant, even when vehicle tilt is different due to a load shift or acceleration/deceleration.
There is one level sensor at the front axle and one at the rear axle that register the vehicle's spring deflection. A signal proportional to vehicle speed is also processed by the ABS control module.
The control module evaluates these signals and activates the automatic vertical headlight aim control actuators when the lights are switched on.
Automatic vertical headlight aim control is required by law for vehicles with gas-discharge (xenon) headlights.
Automatic vertical headlight aim control consists of
- Automatic vertical aim control system control module J431
- Left rear level control system sensor -G76
- Left front level control system sensor -G78
- Left headlight beam adjusting motor -V48
- Right headlight beam adjusting motor -V49
When the vehicle is started, it's current tilt is determined according to a specified value and is sent to the automatic vertical headlight aim control actuator, which leads to a one time correction of the headlight tilt, regardless of whether or not low beams are switched on.
Thereafter, changes relative to the specified value are only sent to the automatic vertical headlight aim control actuator when low beams are switched on.
If malfunctions occur in the system, the driver is notified via a warning symbol in the instrument cluster's center display.
