Shift Interlock Systems Audi A6 C5

Automatic Trans 3 illustrations ~600 words

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

  1. A mechanical control cable prevents ignition key from being removed unless gear selector is in Park. With ignition key removed, gear selector locks in Park. (Scheme 32)
  2. All models are equipped with an electronic shift lock system. Transmission Control Module (TCM) controls shift lock system. This system locks gear selector in Park or Neutral position unless brake pedal is pushed down. TCM uses shift lock control relay to release a solenoid mounted on gear selector assembly.

FUNCTIONAL CHECK

Note. If battery is disconnected or discharged, gear selector can be moved out of Park by turning ignition key to START position. Shift lock relay will not lock gear selector when vehicle speed is greater than 3 MPH.

  1. With ignition key removed, ensure gear selector cannot be moved from Park. Insert key in ignition switch. Turn ignition switch on. Ensure gear selector can only be moved with brake pedal pressed down. Move gear selector to Neutral position. Without pressing brake pedal, ensure gear selector cannot move out of Neutral. Press brake pedal down. Ensure it is now possible to move gear selector. If shift lock system does not operate as described, adjust gear selector, solenoid and control cable.
  2. If shift lock system does not operate after adjustments are made, check electrical system of shift lock system with Tester (VAG 1551/1). See testing information in appropriate VOLKSWAGEN/AUDI V.A.G. ELECTRONIC CONTROLS article. If any problems are found, service harness or components. If no problems are found, TCM may be defective. If shift lock system still does not operate correctly, check for worn or damaged parts and replace as necessary.

ADJUSTMENTS

WARNINGRadio/cassette or radio/CD player is equipped with an anti-theft protection circuit. Whenever battery is disconnected, radio will go into anti-theft mode. When battery is reconnected, radio will display CODE, and will be inoperative until proper code number is entered. Obtain security code before disconnecting battery.

Note. Perform the following adjustments in order given.

IGNITION INTERLOCK CABLE

Loosen lock bolt at shifter. (Scheme 32) Move gear selector to Park position. Put Setting Bar (3352A) between lever and interlock cable. Pull cable to remove slack. Tighten bolt and remove setting bar. Turn ignition off and on several times and recheck gap. Install cable housing to gear selector console.

GEAR SELECTOR CABLE

Disconnect gear selector cable at transaxle. Place shifter in Park position. Place transaxle in Park position. Loosen cable support bracket bolts on transaxle. Connect cable to transaxle. Align cable in support bracket and tighten bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm). Check shifter operation.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGRadio/cassette or radio/CD player is equipped with an anti-theft protection circuit. Whenever battery is disconnected, radio will go into anti-theft mode. When battery is reconnected, radio will display CODE, and will be inoperative until proper code number is entered. Obtain security code before disconnecting battery.

Note. DO NOT kink control cable. If control cable is kinked, gear selector may not move.

  1. Move shifter to "2" position. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 30 seconds. Remove shifter handle. Remove center console. Disconnect voltage supply connector for air bag. Using Torx wrench, remove air bag retaining screws from rear side of steering wheel. Remove air bag. Remove steering wheel.
  2. Remove instrument cluster. Turn ignition on. Place gear selector in Park position. Lift locking clip and pull locking cable from ignition switch. Remove shifter cover. Lift spring clip holding cable housing to shifter assembly. Remove cable from shifter. Remove cable from cable tie at base of instrument panel. To install cable housing, reverse removal procedure. Adjust control cable. See «IGNITION INTERLOCK CABLE»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems__ignition-interlock-cable) procedure under ADJUSTMENTS.

Remove shifter. Remove stop buffer from cable lever. Move shifter to Tiptronic position and remove frame. Move shifter to "2" position. Lift lever for lock cable and remove cable. Move shifter to "D" position. Remove Tiptronic spring clip. Remove selector lever mounting bushing clips. Remove selector bushings. Remove selector lever. Remove locking prawl drift pin. Remove lock solenoid and locking prawl. To install, reverse removal procedure.
