Battery

The battery is one of the most important electrical components in the vehicle. Trouble-free operation of the battery contributes substantially to customer satisfaction. To ensure a long service life, the battery must be checked, serviced, and cared for according to the explanations in this information.

In addition to its function of starting the vehicle, the battery performs other tasks as a buffer and a source of electrical energy for the vehicles entire electrical system.

Safety precautions

Before beginning work, the technicians must be acquainted with the possible risks when handling batteries.

When servicing batteries, technicians must be aware of, and observe warnings and safety measures specified in this repair information.

If the battery is re-connected again, the following steps must be performed

1. Activate automatic run-up and run-down of electric window regulators Owners manual.
2. Synchronize secondary and additional keys to ensure remote control operation. To do so, insert key into ignition lock, switch the ignition on and off again and remove key.
3. Check DTC memories of all control modules and erase DTCs "Undervoltage" if necessary.

Note. After re-connecting voltage supply, ESP indicator lamp can only go out after driving several meters.

1. Lift battery out of right luggage compartment.

Installing

Note. For optimum operation of Energy Management Control Module J644 , the use of the battery indicated in the Parts Catalog is recommended. Only cycle-proof and leak-proof valve-regulated lead-acid batteries or AGM batteries according to standards "TL82506" (from December 1997) and "VW75073" (from August 2001) must be installed. Batteries from the Audi Parts Program have a bottom strip-adapter for adapting to different grip channels. Whether and how bottom strip-adapter is used, refer to operating instructions for battery.

Scheme 8

1. Insert battery into battery holder so that tab of rear battery holder - arrow - engages into cutout for battery clamping strip - 1 -.

1. Battery must no longer be movable.

1. Tighten battery retaining bracket - 1 - using bolt - 2 -.

Note. The tab at the battery retaining bracket must engage in the recess at the battery clamping strip.

With ignition switched off and electrical components switched off, connect battery in the following sequence

1. First, connect terminal clamp - 3 - of positive wire to battery positive terminal "+" by hand and tighten nut.
2. Connect terminal clamp - 5 - of ground (GND) wire to battery negative terminal "-" by hand and tighten nut.
3. Connect hose - 6 - for central venting system, heed notes --> «Batteries with central gas venting»(/audi/a6/6-2004-2008/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment__batteries-with-central-gas-venting) .
4. Close cover - 4 - above battery positive terminal.

1. Check battery for proper seating after installation --> «Check battery for secure seating»(/audi/a6/6-2004-2008/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment__check-battery-for-secure-seating) .
2. Stop battery assistance mode at battery charger.

If the battery was not removed and installed in assistance mode, the following steps must be performed after reconnecting the battery

1. Activate automatic run-up and run-down of electric window regulators Owners manual.
2. Synchronize secondary and additional keys to ensure remote control operation. To do so, insert key into ignition lock, switch the ignition on and off again and remove key.
3. Check DTC memories of all control modules and erase DTCs "Undervoltage" if necessary.

If the battery was replaced, Energy Management Control Module J644 must be coded anew.

Tightening torques

Check battery for secure seating

1. Try to wiggle battery back and forth to check for proper installation.

If battery is not securely seated, the following dangers exist

1. Shortened service life due to damage caused by shaking.
2. If the battery is not secured properly normal shock and vibration can damage the battery plates, which results in premature battery failure.
3. The battery casing can be damaged by the fastening clip (this might possibly allow acid to escape from the battery, which would have severe consequences).
4. Poor crash safety.

Batteries with central gas venting

Note. Make sure that venting hose is always connected to the battery. For batteries with hose/tube for central venting system, make sure the hose is not kinked. Only in this case can the battery be vented freely. The latest generation of batteries has a central venting system and a flashback protector in the form of a so-called "frit". Function: Gas produced when charging leaves the battery through a central opening on the top part of the side covering. A flashback protector is also integrated at the same place to prevent the combustible gas in the battery from igniting. The frit consists of a small round fiberglass mat about 15 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick. It works similarly to a valve, i.e. it allows gas produced in the battery to flow out. Do not lubricate battery terminals. Put the battery terminal clamps on only by hand, without forcing them, to avoid damaging the battery casing.

The "magic eye" - arrow - gives information regarding the acid level and the charge level of the battery. Three different color indications are possible

Note. If the battery is older than 5 years and the color indication of the magic eye is transparent, the battery should be replaced with a new one.

Work procedure

Note. When recharging the battery (but also while driving), air bubbles can form below the "magic eye". These corrupt the color indication of the "magic eye". If batteries are equipped with sealing plugs due to manufacturing conditions, they are covered with a plastic foil. Before performing a visual check, lightly and carefully tap onto "magic eye" using a screwdriver handle; as a result the air bubbles will disappear. Read color indication of the "magic eye" --> Battery with "Magic Eye" .

Visual check of battery

A visual check of the battery should be performed before executing measurements such as open-circuit voltage, electrolyte density or battery load check.

1. Check the following

1. Is the battery housing damaged? Damage to the casing can allow acid to escape from the battery.
2. Are the battery terminals (battery connections) damaged? Because of a damaged battery terminal, contact of the wiring connections is not ensured. This can cause a cable fire and interfere with the function of the electrical system.
3. Are the original battery sealing plugs installed? The sealing plugs must be equipped with an O-ring seal. In case of loss or damage, only original sealing plugs of the same type may be used.

1. No charging unit must be connected when checking the battery, and the engine must not be running.
2. Battery temperature must be at least -10 ° C.

Note. Measurement of open-circuit voltage for evaluation of battery charge condition should only be considered if battery check cannot be executed using VAS 5051 , VAS 5052 or VAS 5053.

Work procedure

1. Make sure the following is observed, since a proper measurement can otherwise not be ensured.

1. Battery remains installed in vehicle, battery ground (GND) strap must not be disconnected.
2. Open rear lid and adjust lid lock at position "Closed" so that the luggage compartment lamp is not switched on.
3. Lock vehicle with remote control.
4. Battery must not be loaded by electrical components within the next 2 hours before measurement.

1. Battery must not be charged within the next 12 hours before measurement.
2. Battery temperature must be at least -10 ° C.

2. Connect multimeter V.A.G 1526C to positive terminal "+" and negative terminal "".

Continuation of open-circuit voltage measurement

After a holding time of at least 2 hours

1. Measure voltage between the battery terminals.

1. If meter indicates 12.5 volts or more, battery is in good condition.
2. If battery open-circuit voltage is less than 12.5 volts, battery must be recharged --> «Charge battery»(/audi/a6/6-2004-2008/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment__charge-battery) .

1. After recharging, a battery check must be performed --> «Battery check using diagnostic systems VAS 5051 , VAS 5052 and VAS 5053»(/audi/a6/6-2004-2008/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment__battery-check-using-diagnostic-systems-vas) .

Battery, rapid-charging

Note. Battery temperature must be at least 10 ° C. Rapid charging of batteries should only be performed in exceptional circumstances (e.g. boost starting) as rapid charging may cause damage.

Checking electrolyte level - batteries with "magic eye"

1. For batteries with "magic eye" - arrow - , the electrolyte level can be read out via color indication. Three different color indications are possible

Checking electrolyte level - batteries with sealing plug

Maintaining the correct electrolyte level in the battery is an important factor affecting the length of the batterys service life.

1. Batteries with visible minimum and maximum marks require only visual inspection from the outside of the battery to check the electrolyte level.

1. The electrolyte level must be above the min marking but may extend only as far as the max marking.

1. Unthread the sealing plugs on batteries which do not have clearly visible min and max markings or have an opaque housing so that the electrolyte level cannot be checked.
2. Check electrolyte level by visually checking the inside of the battery.

1. The electrolyte level must stop at the inside electrolyte level mark (plastic peg). This corresponds to the exterior max. marking.

If the electrolyte level is too low, a loss of battery capacity (power) occurs due to cell plates drying out. If the cell plates are not surrounded by electrolyte (sulfuric acid-water mixture), the plates, plate straps, and cell connectors will corrode. The corrosion damages battery operation, the battery can no longer be used.

If the electrolyte level in the battery cells is too low, the battery must be replaced.

Note. The electrolyte density test, in combination with the battery load test, provides information about the condition of the battery. The temperature of the battery acid must be at least 10 ° C. The electrolyte density can be checked directly after the battery is charged.

1. Remove all sealing plugs of battery cells.
2. Dip hydrometer into battery cell and siphon off enough electrolyte until float floats freely in electrolyte.

1. The larger the specified weight of the siphoned battery acid, the higher the float will float.
2. The acid density of the electrolyte can be read off in kg/dm 3 on the hydrometer scale (specified density of the battery acid).

1. Read off measured value at hydrometer and compare to indicated values in the table

Specified acid density must be at least 1.24 kg/dm 3 in moderate climate zones. If the acid density in all battery cells is too low

Note. Battery chargers VAS 5095A , VAS 5900 and VAS 5903 charge without current and voltage peaks. Batteries can therefore also be charged when installed. When doing this, heed the safety instructions. The devices provide an assistance mode in which they provide supply for the circuits. When working on the electrical equipment with components temporarily switched on, and for "Guided Fault Finding" , the battery must be charged with a battery charger with assistance mode to prevent damage to the battery.

1. Adjust charge current at battery charger according to battery capacity. It should amount to approx. 10 % of the battery capacity. For a 60 Ah-battery, approx. 6 A.
2. Switch on battery charger.
3. Keep lid open while charging.

Severely discharged batteries

1. Batteries which have not been used in driving operation for a long time, for example in stored vehicles, discharge themselves.
2. A battery is severely discharged, when the resting voltage has dropped below 11.6 volts. With voltage between 12.2 and 11.6 V, the battery is pre-damaged. Measuring open-circuit voltage --> «No load voltage, checking»(/audi/a6/6-2004-2008/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment__no-load-voltage-checking) .
3. In severely discharged batteries the electrolyte (a mixture of sulfuric acid and water) consists almost entirely of water, since the proportion of sulfuric acid is strongly reduced. At minus temperatures, the battery can freeze and the casing can crack.
4. Severely discharged batteries can sulfatize, i.e. the complete plate-surfaces of the batteries can harden. The battery acid is not clear, it has a slightly white color.

1. If severely discharged batteries are recharged again shortly after having been severely discharged, the sulfation forms again.
2. If these batteries are not recharged, the plates continue to harden and the charge-retention ability becomes limited. The consequence is reduced battery performance.

Procedure for charging severely discharged batteries, which are sulfatized

Severely discharged batteries which are sulfatized must be charged with a small charge-current as follows

1. Adjust charging current to approx. 5 % of the battery capacity, i.e. for a 60 Ah battery, the charging current is then to approx. 3 Ampere.
2. Charge battery --> «Charge battery»(/audi/a6/6-2004-2008/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment__charge-battery) . The charge voltage (U max ) may only amount to a max. of 14.4 V (volt).

Note. Severely discharged batteries should never be charged quickly.

Battery assistance mode using battery charger VAS 5095A , VAS 5900 or VAS 5903

1. The battery assistance mode is used, e.g. for battery replacement in the workshop when troubleshooting.
2. In the following, the battery assistance mode is described acting for battery charger VAS 5900.

Work procedure

1. Switch ignition off and remove ignition key.
2. Switch off all electrical components.
3. Connect power plug of battery charger VAS 5900.

1. The last selected operating mode appears on the display.

1. Press Start/Stop button for approx. 5 seconds.

1. Menu item "charging of severely discharged batteries / assistance mode" is activated.

1. Press button ↑ or ↓ in order to adjust the vehicle electrical system.

Note. If no button is pressed within 5 seconds, the battery charger VAS 5900 switches back to the main menu. Select the battery voltage by pressing the Start/Stop button.

1. The charging clips are checked for connection to correct poles.

1. Confirm charging clips are connected to correct poles via Start/Stop.

1. The battery charger VAS 5900 starts the assistance mode.

The battery can now be removed.

1. Press Start/Stop button to end assistance mode only after replacing the battery.
2. Disconnect power plug.

If Battery Switch-Off Relay J655 is malfunctioning or was triggered, it must be replaced.

Battery Interrupt Igniter N253 , removing and installing - vehicles as of approx. 07.2004

If Battery Interrupt Igniter N253 is malfunctioning or was triggered, it must be replaced.

1. Replace Battery Interrupt Igniter N253 --> «69 - PASSENGER PROTECTION - AIRBAGS, SEAT BELTS»(/audi/a6/6-2004-2008/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#body-interior) .

Installing

When installing, always heed the following sequence, otherwise proper function of Energy Management Control Module J644 cannot be guaranteed.

1. Install ground (GND) wire 1 to battery on Energy Management Control Module J644.
2. Screw Energy Management Control Module J644 4 on to body, tighten ground (GND) pin 2 and cap nut 5 to do so.
3. Connect ground (GND) wire to battery.
4. Connect electrical harness connector 3 to Energy Management Control Module J644.
5. Perform necessary steps after connecting battery.

If Energy Management Control Module J644 was replaced, it must be coded.

Note. Mark direction of rotation of ribbed belt using chalk or felt-tip marker before removing. Reversing the direction of rotation of a run-in ribbed belt can destroy the belt. Pivot tensioner in - direction of arrow - to release tension on ribbed belt. Remove ribbed belt from generator pulley. Release tensioner.

1. Remove quick-release screws - 1 - and - 2 - and remove front noise insulation.

Installing

Installation is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following

1. Place ribbed belt over belt pulley in the specified sequence.

3. Coolant pump
4. Power-steering pump
5. A/C compressor
6. Ribbed belt tensioner
7. Crankshaft

Note. When installing ribbed belt, be sure that it is seated correctly on belt pulleys. Connect battery. Required actions Battery, disconnecting and connecting . Start engine and check path of belt.

2. Drain engine coolant --> 4.2 Liter V8 5V Engine Mechanical, Engine Code(s): BNK - 19 - ENGINE - COOLING SYSTEM .
3. Bring lock carrier into service position --> «50 - BODY - FRONT»(/audi/a6/6-2004-2008/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#body-exterior) .

Note. Every second time the wiper motor is switched off, it returns the wiper arms to a slightly lower rest position, thus tipping the wiper blade lips the other way. To do so, the wiper motor moves the wiper arms farther down than to rest position and then a bit up again. This lower rest position must not be used to adjust the wiper crank. Only use rest position where wiper arms are rested directly in normal end position. Operate "wipe once" again if necessary. Switch off ignition.

Mark the four points on the windshield using a water soluble marker: Dimension - a - = 255 mm. Dimension - b - = 510 mm. Dimension - c - = 530 mm. Dimension - d - = 430 mm. Locate points from every single nozzle using Windshield Washer Aiming Tool T10127. If the spray area does not correspond to the specifications, the nozzle is contaminated and must be cleaned.

Cleaning the nozzle

Current specifications and requirements for headlamp adjustment 405.

HID headlamp bulb replacement, preparation

Depending on engine version, access to headlamp bulbs could be obstructed. In this case, additional steps must be performed.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

1. Old oil collecting and extracting device V.A.G 1782

Work procedure

1. Extract power steering fluid from reservoir using old oil collecting and extracting device V.A.G 1782.

Note. Place a rag under reservoir for power steering to catch escaping power steering fluid. Remove bolt - arrow - and lay aside reservoir for power steering with hydraulic hoses connected.

Installation is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following

1. Fill up power steering fluid and check hydraulic fluid level --> «48 - STEERING»(/audi/a6/6-2004-2008/remont/axle-shafts/#suspension-wheels-steering) .

Tightening torque

Work procedure

1. Remove bolts - arrows -.
2. Remove air guides - 1 - and - 2 -.

1. Remove rear engine cover - arrows -.

1. Pull check valve - 1 - off from air guide hose.
2. Remove air guide hose, to do so, open clips - arrows - and loosen hose clamp - 2 -.

1. Open clips - arrows - and remove upper air filter housing.

1. Disconnect vacuum line - 1 -.
2. Remove pin of expanding clip - 4 -.
3. Remove lower air filter housing and disconnect electrical harness connector - 2 - at rear.
4. If present, disconnect hose - 3 - secondary air injection pump.

1. Remove lower air filter housing.

Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.

Work procedure

1. Remove bolts - arrows -.
2. Remove air guides - 1 - and - 2 -.

1. Uncover fuel line - 1 - at upper air filter housing.
2. Disconnect electrical harness connector - 2 - at Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor G70.
3. Remove air guide hose, to do so remove hose clamp - 3 -.
4. Open clips - arrows - and remove upper air filter housing with mass air flow sensor.

1. Disconnect vacuum line.
2. Remove pin of expanding clip - 3 -.
3. Remove lower air filter housing and disconnect electrical harness connector - 2 - at rear.
4. Disconnect hose - 1 - to Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump.

1. Remove lower air filter housing.

Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.

Work procedure

1. Remove bolts - arrows -.
2. Remove air guides - 1 and 2 -.

1. Lay aside fuel line and line to EVAP canister at air filter housing and air guide pipe.
2. Disconnect electrical harness connector - 1 - at Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor G70.
3. Disconnect vacuum line - 3 - to air duct hose.
4. Lay aside air guide hose with hose for crankshaft housing ventilation - 2 - connected, release hose clamp - 4 - and open clips - arrows - to do so.

Note. Disregard - 5 -.

1. Open clips - arrows - and remove upper air filter housing.

1. Disconnect vacuum line - 1 -.
2. Remove pin of expanding clip - 4 -.
3. Remove lower air filter housing and disconnect electrical harness connector - 2 - at rear from Intake Air Switch-Over valve N335.

Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.

HID lamp, replacing

Removing

1. With ignition switched off, disconnect battery Ground (GND) wire --> «Battery, disconnecting and connecting»(/audi/a6/6-2004-2008/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment__battery-disconnecting-and-connecting) .

Left headlamp - vehicles with 6-cyl. Gasoline engine

1. Remove reservoir for power steering.

Right headlamp - vehicles with 6-cyl. Gasoline engine

2. Rotate ignition coil - 2 - for gas discharge lamp counter-clockwise - arrow -.
3. Disconnect harness connector - 3 - at ignition coil for gas discharge lamp.
4. Remove ignition coil for gas discharge lamp.

1. Disengage wire clamp - 1 -.
2. Pull gas discharge lamp - 2 - out of headlamp housing.

Installing

Installation is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following

1. Insert new gas discharge lamp into housing, do not touch glass cone with bare hands when doing so.

Note. Note installation position: Upper tab at bulb socket must engage at recess for gas discharge lamp. If present, secure gas discharge lamp using wire clamp.

Note. Harness connector must only be connected with ignition coil installed.

1. Check if recess in housing of ignition coil for gas discharge lamp and recess in pressure ring align completely with each other - arrows -.
2. Attach ignition coil for gas discharge lamp to headlamp and fasten clockwise until stop.

1. Ignition coil must turn freely.
2. Arrow on housing points upward.

1. Connect harness connector.
2. Secure electrical harness connector using securing clip.
3. Close housing lid.

HID headlamp bulb, disposal

Note. HID headlamp bulbs contain mercury. Faulty HID headlamp bulbs (not covered by new vehicle warranty) may need to be disposed of as hazardous waste. Always heed state/local regulations concerning disposal of hazardous waste.

Daytime running light bulb, replacing

Removing

1. With ignition switched off, disconnect battery Ground (GND) wire --> «Battery, disconnecting and connecting»(/audi/a6/6-2004-2008/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment__battery-disconnecting-and-connecting) .

Left headlamp - vehicles with 6-cyl. Gasoline engine

Installing

Installation is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following

1. Insert new bulb into housing, do not touch glass cone with bare hands.
2. Secure socket by turning clockwise.
3. Close housing lid.

High/Low Beam Switch-Over Solenoid, removing and installing

The High/Low Beam Switch-Over Solenoid (left: N347 ; right: N348 ) is installed in headlamp housing beneath gas discharge lamp and cannot be replaced individually if malfunctioning.

1. Replace headlamp --> «Headlamp, removing and installing when reusing current headlamp»(/audi/a6/6-2004-2008/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment) .

Swivel Module Position Sensor and Dynamic Cornering Light Motor, removing and installing

Swivel Module Position Sensor (left: G474 ; right: G475 ) and Dynamic Cornering Light Motor (left: V318 ; right V319 ) is installed in headlamp housing beneath gas discharge lamp and cannot be replaced individually if malfunctioning.

1. Replace headlamp --> «Headlamp, removing and installing when reusing current headlamp»(/audi/a6/6-2004-2008/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment) .

Turn signal indicator bulb, replacing

Removing

1. Pry off cap - 1 - in front wheel house liner in - direction of arrow -.

Note. On vehicles without cap, the wheel house liner must be loosened in front area --> 66 - EXTERIOR EQUIPMENT .

1. Turn bulb socket counter-clockwise - arrow - and remove from housing.

1. Release securing clip in - direction of arrow - and pull light bulb - 1 - out of socket - 2 -.

Installing

Installation is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following

1. Insert new bulb into housing, do not touch glass cone with bare hands.
2. Push cap into wheel house liner until it engages noticeably.

Left and Right Headlamp Beam Adjustment Motors V48 / V49 , removing and installing

Removing

1. With ignition switched off, disconnect battery Ground (GND) wire --> «Battery, disconnecting and connecting»(/audi/a6/6-2004-2008/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment__battery-disconnecting-and-connecting) .

1. Remove reservoir for power steering.

2. By pivoting adjustment motor - 1 - to the side, push ball head of adjustment axle out of ball head mount.
3. Remove headlamp beam adjustment motor out of headlamp housing.
4. Disconnect electrical harness connector - 2 -.

Installing

Installation is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following

1. First, insert ball head of adjustment axle from the side into ball head mount of reflector, pull reflector toward rear to do so.

Note. Always adjust headlamps after removing, installing or replacing adjustment motors 405. Close housing lid. Connect battery. Required actions Battery, disconnecting and connecting .

Note. Headlight mounting tabs that have broken off can be replaced by installing the repair set. Complete replacement of the headlight is therefore not necessary. Different repair sets are available for the left and the right headlamps Parts Catalog.

Work procedure

1. Remove headlamp with broken mounting tab --> «Headlamp, removing and installing after replacing components at front end»(/audi/a6/6-2004-2008/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment) .
2. Remove remains of broken mounting tab at headlamp housing.
3. Attach mounting tab - 1 - or - 3 - or - 4 - or - 5 - of repair set at headlamp housing and secure tab using bolts - 2 -.

Side marker lamp, removing and installing

Removing

1. Switch ignition off and remove ignition key.
2. Turn light switch into "0" position.
3. Remove quick-release screws - 1 - and - 2 - and remove front noise insulation.

2. Remove side marker lamp - 2 - toward front out of bumper cover.
3. Remove housing for side marker lamp from bulb socket - 3 -.

Installing

Installation is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following

1. After installing side marker lamp, press clip toward outside of vehicle into bumper cover using a screwdriver.

Side marker light bulb, replacing

Removing

1. Switch ignition off and remove ignition key.
2. Turn light switch into "0" position.
3. Remove quick-release screws - 1 - and - 2 - and remove front noise insulation.

Installing

Installation is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following

1. Insert new bulb (12V, 5W - orange) into housing, do not touch glass cone with bare hands when doing so.
2. When inserting, make sure markings - 2 - and - 3 - are horizontal.

The fog lamp is integrated in the headlamp housing and cannot be replaced individually if malfunctioning.

If the instrument panel vent cannot be pulled out that way, proceed as follows

1. Position lamellae of instrument panel vent horizontally.
2. Release all clips - arrow - by inserting clockmaker screwdrivers - 2 - and - 3 -.
3. Remove instrument panel vent on both sides out of installation opening using hook 3438 , the screwdrivers must remain inserted when doing so.

3. Pull out Rear Parking Aid Warning Buzzer H15 - 2 - at right belt webbing guide - 3 - in - direction of arrow -.
4. Disconnect electrical harness connector - 1 -.

Installing
