SHIFT MECHANISM EMERGENCY RELEASE

Note. It is not possible to move the selector lever out of P if the battery is disconnected or if it is discharged. The vehicle cannot be moved or towed. The shift lock solenoid -N110- will cancel out the lock when the emergency release is activated.

Procedure

Remove the front ashtray insert.

Pry out the cap inside the ashtray housing with a screwdriver -arrow-.

Note. The shape of the cover caps may differ from those in the illustration.

Press the cylinder -arrow- on the shift lock solenoid through the opening in the center of the ashtray housing and, at the same time, press the locking button in the selector lever handle and move the selector out of P.

Note. This unlocks the locking lever -1- when the selector lever is in P. If the cylinder -arrow- on the shift lock solenoid is covered by insulation or a wire, then move the insulation or the wire to the side.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LINES, CLEANING

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Used Oil Collecting and Extracting Device V.A.G 1782
  2. Hose diameter approximately 18 mm
  3. Compressed air gun, commercially available
  4. Protective eyewear

Procedure

Note. Automatic transmission clean working conditions, refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .

Before installing a replacement transmission, always clean out the ATF cooler and ATF pipes using compressed air (maximum 10 bar).

Note. If extremely dirty ATF flows out when cleaning using compressed air, flush the ATF cooler and lines using clean ATF.

ATF, CHECKING LEVEL AND CORRECTING

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Vehicle Diagnostic Tester
  2. Oil Collecting and Extracting Device V.A.G 1782
  3. ATF Filler Tool V.A.G 1924
  4. Protective eyewear

Test Conditions

  1. The transmission must not be in the emergency operating mode.
  2. Move the vehicle onto a 4-column workshop hoist or over a work pit so it is completely level.
  3. The selector level is in P.
  4. The parking brake button should be activated to close the electromechanical parking brake.
  5. Exhaust hose/-hoses of an exhaust extraction system connected.
  6. The A/C and the heater are off.
  7. The Vehicle Diagnostic Tester is connected.
  8. The ATF temperature must not be higher than 30 °C (86 °F) at the beginning of the test. The transmission must cool down first if the temperature is higher.

Note. ATF temperature appears in the display of Vehicle Diagnostic Tester. The ATF level will vary according to the temperature of the ATF. It is possible to overfill the ATF if the level is checked when the temperature is too low. It is possible to overfill the ATF if the level is checked when the temperature is too high. Overfilling or under filling will influence the function of the transmission.

Procedure

Select the following menu items on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the Function/component Selection in guided fault finding

  1. Drive
  2. 0B6-Transmission
  3. 01-On Board Diagnostic (OBD) Capable Systems
  4. 02-Transmission Electronics
  5. 02-Transmission Electronics, Functions
  6. 02-Read Measured Value Block

Select the measured value from the list Transmission Fluid Temperature on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.

Check the ATF temperature.

ATF, Checking Level and Correcting

Note. The ATF level is checked at the ATF inspection plug. The ATF level is correct if a small amount of fluid drips out of the inspection opening (this is normal as the fluid expands as it heats up) at an ATF temperature between 35 °C (95 °F) and 45 °C (113 °F) (for hot countries 50 °C (122 °F)).

CAUTIONThere is a risk of damaging the transmission. Only use the ATF available as a replacement part for the automatic transmission 0B6. Other oils can cause malfunctions or transmission failure. The ATF filler tool must be clean and the ATF must not be mixed with any other ATF.

Fill the reservoir on the V.A.G 1924 with the ATF for the automatic transmission 0B6; for the correct ATF specification

Secure reservoir of V.A.G 1924 as high as possible on vehicle.

CAUTIONThere is a risk of damaging the transmission. Engine must not be started if only a small amount or no ATF is in the transmission after repair work or after significant ATF loss. In this case, pre-filling is necessary ATF, DRAINING OR FILLING AFTER REPAIR .

Remove the rear noise insulation. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Start the engine with the selector lever in P.

While pressing the brake pedal and with the vehicle idling, shift through all the selector lever positions (P, R, N, D, S) leaving each position engaged for at least 10 seconds.

Move the selector lever into N.

Increase the RPM to 2000 and hold it there for at least 60 seconds.

Move the selector lever into P.

Run the engine at idle.

Place the V.A.G 1782 under the transmission.

WARNINGDanger of eye injury. Wear protective eyewear.

When ATF temperature of 35 °C (95 °F) is reached, remove the ATF inspection plug -arrow B- and drain off any excess ATF.

Note. The ATF inspection plug is accessible through the opening on the tunnel crossmember.

  1. If ATF drips from the ATF inspection opening before the ATF has reached 40° C (104 °F), the ATF level -arrow- is OK.

Note. The ATF inspection plug must be installed again before the ATF reaches a temperature of 45 °C (113 °F) (50 °C (122 °F) with hot climates).

Fasten ATF inspection plug with new gasket -arrow- to 9 Nm. The ATF level test is now completed.

Install the noise insulation. Refer to Removal and Installation .

  1. If no ATF drips out of the ATF inspection opening when the temperature has reached 40 °C (104 °F)

Filling the ATF

Note. The ATF inspection plug must be installed again before the ATF reaches 45 °C (113 °F) (50 °C (122 °F) for countries with hot climates). Let the transmission cool down and check again.

Add ATF using V.A.G 1924 until ATF drips from the check hole.

Note. Too little or too much ATF will impair the transmission.

Fasten ATF inspection plug with new gasket -arrow- to 9 Nm. The ATF level test is now completed.

Remove the ATF residue on the tunnel crossmember and clean the crossmember thoroughly.

Note. There are several recesses on the top side of the tunnel crossmember where leaking ATF can collect. They must be cleaned thoroughly. Ignore -arrows-.

Install the rear noise insulation. Refer to Removal and Installation .

ATF, DRAINING OR FILLING AFTER REPAIR

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Vehicle Diagnostic Tester
  2. Oil Collecting and Extracting Device V.A.G 1782
  3. ATF Filler Tool V.A.G 1924
  4. Protective eyewear

Procedure

  1. The engine is off.
  2. Move the vehicle onto a 4-column shop hoist or over a work pit so it is completely level.
  3. The selector level is in P.
  4. The parking brake button should be activated to close the electromechanical parking brake.

Remove the rear noise insulation. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Place the V.A.G 1782 under the transmission.

WARNINGDanger of eye injury. Wear protective eyewear.

Remove the ATF drain plug -arrow A- and drain the ATF.

CAUTIONThere is a risk of damaging the transmission. Do not start the engine when there is no ATF in the transmission.

Note. Follow the disposal requirements. Replace the ATF drain plug and seal.

Tighten the new drain plug -arrow A- to 12 Nm.

Fill the Transmission with ATF.

CAUTIONThere is a risk of damaging the transmission. Only use the ATF available as a replacement part for the automatic transmission 0B6. Other oils can cause malfunctions or transmission failure. The ATF filler tool must be clean and the ATF must not be mixed with any other ATF.

Fill the reservoir on the V.A.G 1924 with the ATF for the automatic transmission 0B6; for the correct ATF specification

Secure reservoir of V.A.G 1924 as high as possible on vehicle.

Remove ATF inspection plug -arrow B-.

Guide filler hook of V.A.G 1924 from underneath into an opening in the cap -arrow-.

Add ATF using V.A.G 1924 until ATF drips from the check hole.

Move the selector lever into P.

Start the engine, wait 20 seconds and then turn it off.

Add ATF using V.A.G 1924 until ATF drips from the check hole.

Start the engine.

Continue to add ATF using the V.A.G 1924 until ATF starts to come out again from the check hole.

Tighten the ATF inspection plug.

While pressing the brake pedal and with the vehicle idling, shift through all the selector lever positions (P, R, N, D, S) leaving each position engaged for at least 10 seconds.

Move the selector lever into N.

Increase the RPM to 2000 and hold it there for at least 60 seconds.

Move the selector lever into P.

Check the ATF level and correct if necessary. Refer to ATF, CHECKING LEVEL AND CORRECTING .

Note. Follow the instructions and test requirements for checking the ATF level.

Install the rear noise insulation. Refer to Removal and Installation .

  1. Installed location: The Data Link Connector (DLC) for the vehicle diagnostic tester is located in the driver side footwell.

Mechatronic, Transmission Control Module -J217-, Multifunction Transmission Range Switch -F125-, Transmission Input Speed Sensor -G182- and Transmission Output Speed Sensor -G195

  1. Installed location: The mechatronic unit is bolted to the bottom of the transmission housing and is covered by the transmission fluid pan.

The Mechatronic unit incorporates the hydraulic control, the transmission control module, the multifunction transmission range switch and the sensors and actuators as a complete synchronized unit. The following are part of

  1. Transmission control module
  2. F125
  3. Transmission input speed sensor
  4. Transmission output speed sensor

Only the complete Mechatronic unit can be replaced.

Note. OBD checks all the components named.

Note. The instrument cluster must be replaced if the transmission range display is faulty. Refer to Removal and Installation .

  1. Installed location: The selector lever sensor system control module and the tiptronic switch are a single unit -2-, which is clipped to the selector mechanism function unit -arrows-.

  1. Installed location: The transmission park selector switch, which consists of two reed contacts -1- and - 2-, is installed on the circuit board -B- on the shift lock solenoid -A-.

Note. The transmission park selector switch can only be replaced together with the shift lock solenoid.

Note. A specific value from the accelerator pedal position sensor -G79- and the accelerator pedal position sensor -G185- is stored in the engine control module.

  1. Installation location: Accelerator pedal position sensors are integrated inside the accelerator pedal module -arrow-.

Note. If the accelerator pedal sensor is faulty, then replace the accelerator pedal module. Refer to Removal and Installation .

SELECTOR MECHANISM OVERVIEW

WARNINGThere is a risk of injury and accident from accidentally engaging a gear when the engine is running. Before work is done with the engine running, move the selector lever into P and press the parking brake button to engage the electromechanical parking brake.

Before disassembling the selector mechanism, perform check. Refer to SELECTOR MECHANISM, CHECKING .

Procedure

  1. Tightening specification, refer to «SELECTOR LEVER CABLE OVERVIEW»(/audi/a5/i-2007-2011/remont/transmission-control-systems/#controls-housing-automatic-transmission-0b6-awd-coupe) .

Pry the selector lever boot frame -1- out of the center console -arrows- using the 3409.

Move the selector lever into D.

Through opening -arrow- in shift mechanism, loosen bolt on selector lever cable approximately one turn using the T40031.

Note. Loosen the clamping screw approximately one turn but do not remove it. The clamping screw is only accessible when the selector lever is in D. The selector lever must remain in D when the clamping screw is loose.

Carefully move the selector forward and back gently without shifting into another selector lever position. This releases the tension in the selector lever cable.

Move the selector lever into the tiptronic gate.

Note. Do not touch the selector lever during the adjusting.

Tighten the clamping screw in this position with the T40031 without touching the selector lever.

Selector mechanism, checking, refer to SELECTOR MECHANISM, CHECKING .

If shift mechanism does not function properly after adjusting selector lever cable

Bring the selector lever cable into the basic setting. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, BRINGING INTO BASIC SETTING .

SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, BRINGING INTO BASIC SETTING

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Pry Lever - Rmv Outside Mirror 80 - 200
  2. Trim Removal Wedge 3409
  3. Vehicle Diagnostic Tester VAS 5051B
  4. Socket and Key T40031

Procedure

  1. Guided fault finding with the vehicle diagnostic tester is completed and all faults have been corrected.

Select the following menu entries on the vehicle diagnostic tester in Function/Component Selection Guided Fault Finding

  1. Drive
  2. 0B6-Transmission
  3. 01-On Board Diagnostic (OBD) Capable Systems
  4. 02-Transmission Electronics
  5. 02-Transmission Electronics Functions
  6. 02-Read Measure Value Block

Select the measured value gear on the vehicle diagnostic tester.

Compare the following displays

  1. Measured value gear on the vehicle diagnostic tester
  2. Selector lever position
  3. Selector lever transmission range position display unit -Y26- on the shift mechanism
  4. Transmission range display -Y6- in the instrument cluster

Conditions

  1. The displays must match

If the displays do not match

Adjust selector lever cable. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, ADJUSTING

If the individual displays cannot be reached by adjusting the selector lever cable

Selector Lever Cable, Bringing into Basic Setting

  1. Tightening specification, refer to «SELECTOR LEVER CABLE OVERVIEW»(/audi/a5/i-2007-2011/remont/transmission-control-systems/#controls-housing-automatic-transmission-0b6-awd-coupe) .

Pry the selector lever boot frame -A- out of the center console -arrows- using the 3409.

Move the selector lever into D.

Loosen the screw on the selector lever cable through the opening -arrow- in the selector mechanism one turn using the T40031.

Note. Only loosen the clamping screw - do not remove it. The clamping screw is only accessible when the selector lever is in D. The selector lever must remain in D when the clamping screw is loose.

Remove the ball socket -1- on the selector lever cable from the selector shaft lever using the 80 - 200.

Note. Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable. Lubricate the cable eye and the ball socket on the selector lever cable with polycarbamide grease G 052 142 A2 before installing. Ignore -2-.

Push the selector shaft lever -1- on the transmission all the way back -arrow-, until the parking lock engages.

Note. When parking lock is engaged, it must not be possible to turn both front wheels in one direction at the same time.

Press the selector shaft lever forward three detents so the transmission is in D.

Make sure the selector lever inside the vehicle is also in D.

Select the 02 - Transmission Electronics and then Read Measure Value Block on the vehicle diagnostic tester in Guided Fault Finding

Select measured value gear on the vehicle diagnostic tester.

Compare the following displays

  1. Measured value gear on the vehicle diagnostic tester
  2. Selector lever position
  3. Selector lever transmission range position display unit -Y26- on the shift mechanism
  4. Transmission range display -Y6- in the instrument cluster

Conditions

  1. The displays must match

Carefully press the selector lever cable ball socket -1- in this position onto the selector shaft lever.

Note. Do not bend selector shaft lever when pressing on, otherwise shift mechanism can no longer be adjusted exactly. Ignore -2-.

Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, ADJUSTING .

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLER AND LINES OVERVIEW

Note. Clean working conditions for the automatic transmission. Refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS . General Repair Instructions, refer to REPAIR INFORMATION . Seal any open lines and connections with a clean plug from the engine bung set VAS 6122. Check ATF level after replacing ATF pipes. Refer to ATF, CHECKING LEVEL AND CORRECTING

CAUTIONThere is a risk of damaging the transmission. Remove all the plugs on the ATF pipes and on the transmission that were installed during removal. The ATF cooling function will not work and the transmission will be damaged if the plugs are forgotten.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION COOLER AND LINES OVERVIEW

Note. Clean working conditions for the automatic transmission. Refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS . General repair instructions, refer to REPAIR INFORMATION . Seal any open lines and connections with a clean plug from the engine bung set VAS 6122. Check ATF level after replacing ATF pipes. Refer to ATF, CHECKING LEVEL AND CORRECTING

CAUTIONThere is a risk of damaging the transmission. Remove all the plugs on the ATF pipes and on the transmission that were installed during removal. The ATF cooling function will not work and the transmission will be damaged if the plugs are forgotten.

1. SELECTOR MECHANISM FUNCTION TEST

  1. The starter does not work when the selector lever is in S, D, R or in the tiptronic gate
  2. If selector lever position N is selected at speeds greater than 5 km/h, the shift lock solenoid must not engage and block the selector lever. The selector lever can be moved into a another gear.
  3. For speeds below 2 km/h (almost standstill) and shifting into selector lever position N, the shift lock solenoid must only engage after approximately 1 second. The selector lever can be move out of N only when the brake pedal is pressed.

Selector lever in P

Press the button on the parking brake to activate it.

Press the key briefly in the ignition lock to reach the ignition on position.

Do not press the brake pedal.

  1. The selector lever is locked and cannot be moved out of P while locking button on selector lever handle is pressed. The shift lock solenoid -N110- locks the selector lever.

Press the brake pedal and hold it down.

  1. The shift lock solenoid unlocks the selector lever. It is not possible to shift into a gear. Press the locking button in the selector lever handle and slowly move the selector lever out of P through R, N, D, S. While doing this, make sure the transmission range display -Y6- inside the instrument cluster matches the actual position of the selector lever.

The selector lever is in N and the ignition is turned on

Do not press the brake pedal.

  1. After a brief moment: The selector lever is locked and cannot be moved out of N even though the locking button in the selector lever handle is pressed. The shift lock solenoid locks the selector lever.

Press the brake pedal.

  1. The shift lock solenoid unlocks the selector lever. It is possible to shift into D.

The selector lever is in D and the ignition is turned on

Move the selector lever into the tiptronic gate.

  1. The D in the selector lever transmission range position display unit -Y26- must turn off and the plus and minus must turn on.
  2. The transmission range display inside the instrument cluster must change from D to M1 when the selector lever is moved into the tiptronic gate.

Perform a guided fault finding if the specified values are not reached => .

Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, ADJUSTING .

Check ignition key removal lock.

2. CHECK IGNITION KEY WITHDRAWAL LOCK

Press the button on the parking brake to activate it.

Do not press the brake pedal.

Press the key briefly in the ignition lock to reach the ignition on position.

Press the brake pedal and hold it down.

  1. It must be possible to move the selector lever out of P without getting stuck when the locking button in the selector lever handle is pressed.

Turn off the ignition.

  1. It should not be possible to remove the ignition key when the selector lever is in any other position than P.

Move the selector lever into P.

Remove the key.

  1. It should be possible to remove the key only when the selector lever is in P.
  2. It is not possible to move the selector lever out of P when both the locking button and the brake pedal are pressed.

If the ignition key lock does not work as described, perform guided fault finding => .

3. CHECK LOCKING BUTTON IN THE SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE

Make sure locking button moves easily.

  1. It must be possible to press the locking button without using great force.
  2. After releasing, the locking button must come all the way back out by itself.

Check the selector lever handle for correct installation if the specified values are not reached. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE .

Check if the selector rod or selector lever is bent.

Function test

  1. The ignition is switched on.

The locking button on the selector lever handle must be pressed for the following shifts. If it is not pressed, the selector lever cannot be shifted into the specified position.

  1. Move the selector lever from P into R and press the brake pedal at the same time.
  2. D into S
  3. N into R; stationary, press the brake pedal after waiting longer
  4. R into P

Check the selector lever handle for correct installation if the specified values are not reached. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE .

Perform guided fault finding => and check the shift lock solenoid.

Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, ADJUSTING .

REMOVING

Move the selector lever into P.

Remove the multimedia system control head -E380-. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Remove the front ashtray. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Loosen the nuts -1, 3, 5 and 6- a few turns but do not remove them completely.

Note. This lowers the shift mechanism function unit slightly for better accessibility.

CAUTIONThe shift mechanism can be destroyed by broken clips, tabs or other objects. Make sure no components or other objects fall into the shift mechanism. The shift mechanism must be replaced if that happens.

Open the retaining tabs -2- and -3- in the direction of the -arrow-, slightly raise the front of the sealing cap -A- and hold it in that position.

Note. This prevents the retaining tabs from engaging again.

Using a screwdriver, open the upper retaining tab -1- on the cover in the direction of the -arrow- over the bracket -B- and remove the cover -A- upward.

Disconnect the electrical connector on the shift lock solenoid.

Press the hooks -A- into the selector mechanism -arrow- and hold them in this position.

Note. Replace the selector mechanism function unit if any of the hooks -A- are broken off.

Tilt the shift lock solenoid in direction of the -arrow- so that the ball head -1- comes out of the lever on the selector mechanism.

Remove the shift lock solenoid.

INSTALLING

Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following

  1. Tightening specification, refer to «SELECTOR MECHANISM OVERVIEW»(/audi/a5/i-2007-2011/remont/transmission-control-systems/#controls-housing-automatic-transmission-0b6-awd-coupe__selector-mechanism-overview) .

Turn the ball head -1- into the correct installed position.

Install the shift lock solenoid at an angle into the selector mechanism and then tilt it opposite the direction of the -arrow-.

  1. The ball head -1- must engage completely in the operating lever on shift mechanism. Press it down using a small screwdriver if necessary.

Attach the shift lock solenoid to the hook -A-.

Position the cover -A- over the shift lock solenoid and carefully lock it in -1 through 3-.

Connect the electrical connectors.

Check the shift mechanism function before completing assembly. Refer to SELECTOR MECHANISM, CHECKING .

Install the front ashtray. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Install the multimedia system control head. Refer to Removal and Installation .

SELECTOR LEVER SENSOR SYSTEM CONTROL MODULE WITH TIPTRONIC SWITCH

Note. The selector lever sensor system control module -J587- and the tiptronic switch -F189- are a single component.

Remove the selector lever handle. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE .

Remove the multimedia system control head -E380-. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Remove the front ashtray. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Disconnect the connector -1-.

Open the four tabs -arrows- and remove the selector lever sensor system control module and tiptronic switch upward.

Note. Ignore -arrow A-.

Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following

Install the selector lever sensor system control module with the tiptronic switch into the four tabs -arrows-.

Attach the wire to the selector lever transmission range position display unit -Y26- -arrows-.

Install the front ashtray. Refer to Removal and Installation .

SELECTOR LEVER CABLE

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Pry Lever - Rmv Outside Mirror 80 - 200
  2. Trim Removal Wedge 3409
  3. Socket and Key T40031

Press the button on the parking brake to activate it.

Move the selector lever into D.

Pry the selector lever boot frame -A- out of the center console -arrows- using the 3409.

Insert the T40031 through the opening -arrow- in the selector mechanism and loosen the bolt on the selector lever cable one turn.

Note. Only loosen the clamping screw - do not remove it. The clamping screw is only accessible when the selector lever is in D. The selector lever must remain in D when the clamping screw is loose.

Remove the left front muffler. Refer to [For engine(s) CAUA] Description and Operation or to [For engine(s) CAEB] Description and Operation or to [For engine(s) CALA] Description and Operation .

Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the driveshaft heat shield -1-.

Remove the ball socket -1- on the selector lever cable from the selector shaft lever using the 80 - 200.

Remove the clip -2- and remove the selector lever cable from the transmission.

Note. Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

Remove the four lock washers -1-.

Note. Replace the O-ring on the selector lever cable. Lubricate the cable eye and the ball socket on the selector lever cable with polycarbamide grease G 052 142 A2 before installing.

Slide the noise insulation -2- over the opening on the selector lever cable -3-.

Install the O-ring -1- on the selector lever cable.

Install the selector lever cable -2- into the gearshift mechanism function unit -arrow-.

Secure the selector lever cable -2- with the circlip -3-.

  1. Installed position: The angled end of the circlip -1- faces the selector mechanism.

Install the noise insulation -2- with four new lock washers -1-.

Push the selector shaft lever -1- on the transmission all the way back -arrow-, until the parking lock engages.

Note. When parking lock is engaged, it must not be possible to turn both front wheels in one direction at the same time.

Press the selector shaft lever forward three detents so the transmission is in D.

Make sure the selector lever inside the vehicle is also in D.

Carefully press the selector lever cable ball socket -1- in this position onto the selector shaft lever.

Note. Do not bend selector shaft lever when pressing on, otherwise shift mechanism can no longer be adjusted exactly.

Attach the selector lever cable with clips -2-.

Note. Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

Check the selector lever cable and adjust if necessary. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, ADJUSTING .

Selector mechanism, checking. Refer to SELECTOR MECHANISM, CHECKING .

TRANSMISSION PARK SELECTOR SWITCH -F305

  1. Installed location: The transmission park selector switch, which consists of two reed contacts -1- and - 2-, is installed on the circuit board -B- on the shift lock solenoid -N110- -A-.

The transmission park selector switch can only be replaced together with the shift lock solenoid. Refer to SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID -N110 .

SHIFT MECHANISM FUNCTION UNIT

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Pry Lever - Rmv Outside Mirror 80 - 200
  2. Counterhold Tool T10172 with Adapter T10172/5

Remove the front muffler or front exhaust pipe. Refer to ] [For engine(s) CAUA] Removal and Installation or to [For engine(s) CAEB] Removal and Installation or to [For engine(s) CALA] Removal and Installation .

Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the driveshaft heat shield -1-.

Remove the bolts that connect the driveshaft to the transmission by counter holding them with the T10172 and T10172/5.

Press the driveshaft together with rear final drive; the universal joint is able to slide axially.

Allow the driveshaft to hang down.

Loosen the fasteners -arrows- and remove the heat shield -1-.

Remove the ball socket -1- on the selector lever cable from the selector shaft lever using the 80 - 200.

Remove the clip -2- and remove the selector lever cable from the transmission.

Note. Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

Remove the multimedia system control head -E380-. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Remove the front ashtray. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Disconnect the connectors -2 and 4-.

Remove the insulation mat over the shift mechanism.

Note. The illustration does not show the insulation mat. A second technician is required when detaching shift mechanism below vehicle.

Remove the bolts -1, 3, 5 and 6-.

Note. Depending on the version, the clips -arrows- may not be installed so the shift mechanism may fall down after removing the bolts.

Remove the selector mechanism downward.

Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following

  1. Tightening specifications, refer to «SELECTOR MECHANISM OVERVIEW»(/audi/a5/i-2007-2011/remont/transmission-control-systems/#controls-housing-automatic-transmission-0b6-awd-coupe__selector-mechanism-overview) .

Note. Lubricate the ball socket on the selector lever cable with polycarbamide greaseG 052 142 A2 before installing. Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, ADJUSTING .

Selector mechanism, checking. Refer to SELECTOR MECHANISM, CHECKING .

Install the driveshaft. Refer to Removal and Installation or Removal and Installation .

SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE

  1. Trim Removal Wedge 3409
  2. Hose Clamp Pliers V.A.G 1275

Move the selector lever into N.

Note. Both the selector lever handle and the selector lever boot are removed.

Pry the selector lever boot frame -1- out of the center console -arrows- using the 3409.

Secure the locking button in its extended position with a cable tie -arrow- as illustrated.

Fold the selector lever boot -1- upward and over the selector lever handle -2-.

Open the clamp -arrow- and remove the selector lever handle with the selector lever boot without touching the locking button.

Note. In order to install the selector lever handle, the locking button must be pulled out all the way and secured either with a cable tie -arrow- or with the assembly tool supplied with a new handle. If the lock button was not secured, do not pull it out from the handle using mechanical aids. Mount the compressed air gun to the bottom of the handle and then push the locking button out with compressed air.

Install the new clamp -arrow- on the selector lever handle.

Install the selector lever handle all the way onto the selector lever - make sure the locking button faces the driver.

  1. When doing this, handle must engage into ring groove of the selector lever.

Remove the cable ties or assembly aids. The locking button mechanism will engage in the vertical groove on the selector lever. Press the locking button into the selector lever handle if necessary.

Move the selector lever into R and S to check the function of the buttons.

  1. If the selector lever positions cannot be reached, remove the handle again. Refer to «SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE»(/audi/a5/i-2007-2011/remont/transmission-control-systems/#controls-housing-automatic-transmission-0b6-awd-coupe__selector-lever-handle) .

Secure the selector lever handle -C- to the selector lever with the clamp -A-. Use V.A.G 1275.

Install the selector lever boot frame -B- in the center console.

Remove the selector lever handle. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE .

Bind together the spring tabs -A- on the selector lever handle using a cable tie -B- as illustrated.

Remove the bolts -1- and remove the lower stop -2- for the transmission mount.

Turn off the ignition and remove the key.

Carefully remove the engine cover from the pins in the direction of the -arrow-. Do not pull sharply on the engine cover or pull it to one side.

Procedure

Note. Replace bolts that are tightened to the specification. Replace self-locking nuts and bolts and seals, gaskets and O-rings. Secure all hose connections with hose clamps of the same type as those equipped by the factory. When installing, bring all cable ties back to same positions.

Transmission Installation Tightening Specifications: TRANSMISSION, INSTALLING

Before installing a replacement transmission, always clean out the ATF cooler and ATF pipes using compressed air (maximum 10 bar). Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LINES, CLEANING .

Clean residue from the threaded holes in the cylinder block using a thread tap before installing.

When installing a replacement transmission, install the transmission support, the transmission mounting and the tunnel crossmember on the new transmission. Refer to TUNNEL CROSSMEMBER, TRANSMISSION MOUNT AND TRANSMISSION SUPPORT OVERVIEW .

Mount the transmission onto the T40173 and secure it using the tension strap -1- as illustrated.

The following preparations must be made before connecting the engine and transmission

Turn the torque converter so that the hole next to the notch -arrow- is visible in the lower cut-out in the transmission housing as illustrated.

Note. There is only 1 notch on the circumference; rotate the torque converter as needed.

Insert the T40170 in the transmission housing from below and secure it on the flange shaft -1-.

Check if the alignment sleeves -A- for centering the engine/transmission are in the cylinder block and insert them if they are not.

Inspect the aluminum bolts used to connect the engine to the transmission to see if they can be used again and mark them, if necessary TRANSMISSION, INSTALLING .

Place the transmission on the engine and tighten the bolts -6 through 11- that connect the engine to the transmission.

Remove the T40170.

Clip the locking piece -1- into the starter opening.

Note. There are different versions of the locking piece depending on the engine. Apply some grease to the locking piece if it is difficult to install the starter.

Install the starter. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Loosen the spindles 10 - 222 A /11.

Raise the transmission and tighten the tunnel crossmember bolts -arrows-. Refer to TUNNEL CROSSMEMBER, TRANSMISSION MOUNT AND TRANSMISSION SUPPORT OVERVIEW .

Loosen the tension strap and remove the V.A.G 1383 A with the T40173 from under the transmission.

Note. The following step is necessary to make sure the torque converter rests on the drive plate evenly and is not tilted.

Press the torque converter -2- against the drive plate -3- slightly in the direction of the -arrow- using an assembly lever -1-.

Attach the torque converter to the drive plate as follows

Note. Tighten the bolts with the V.A.G 1332/14.

Install the first bolt -arrow- and tighten by hand (2 Nm).

Continue turning the crankshaft on the vibration damper 240° in direction of engine rotation using the T10355.

With the crankshaft in this position, tighten the bolt -arrow- to 60 Nm.

Continue turning the crankshaft 120° and tighten the remaining 2 bolts to the tightening specification.

Install in reverse order of removal paying attention to the following

Tighten the remaining bolts -2 through 5-.

Note. The bolt -2- attaches the starter to the transmission and also has a spacer -arrow-. The spacer sleeve must be inserted between the starter and the transmission.

Install the ATF pipes. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLER AND LINES OVERVIEW .

Install selector lever cable. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE .

Attach the steering column to the steering gear. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Install the subframe crossbrace. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Attach the left and right drive axles to the transmission flange shafts. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Install the driveshaft heat shield TRANSMISSION, INSTALLING .

Install exhaust system and adjust free of tension. Refer to Description and Operation .

Install the noise insulation. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Connect the battery. Refer to Removal and Installation .

CAUTIONThere is a risk of destroying control modules with excess voltage. Do not use a charger as a starting aid.

Check the selector lever cable and adjust if necessary. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, ADJUSTING .

Check the ATF level and correct if necessary. Refer to ATF, CHECKING LEVEL AND CORRECTING .

Loosen the tension strap and remove the V.A.G 1383 A with the T40173 from under the transmission.

Note. The following step is necessary to make sure the torque converter rests on the drive plate evenly and is not tilted.

Press the torque converter -2- against the drive plate -3- slightly in the direction of the -arrow- using an assembly lever -1-.

Attach the torque converter to the drive plate as follows

With the crankshaft in this position, tighten the bolt -arrow- to 60 Nm.

Continue turning the crankshaft 60° and tighten the remaining 5 bolts to the tightening specification.

Tighten the remaining bolts -2 through 5-.

Install in reverse order of removal paying attention to the following

  1. Audi A4 from VIN 8K-9A-066500, Audi A5 from VIN 8T-9A-008000: the aluminum bolts -2 through 11- may be used two times. Therefore, the bolts must be marked with two notches X made by a chisel after they have be used the first time -arrow-.
  2. Bolts marked with an X cannot be used any further.

Removing

Position the front wheels so they are straight.

Turn off the ignition and remove the key.

CAUTIONRisk of destroying electronic components when disconnecting the battery. Observe measures for disconnecting battery.

Disconnect the battery. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Remove the engine cover -arrows-.

Remove the bulkhead plenum chamber. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Remove the bolts -arrows-.

Disconnect the connector on the Engine Coolant Level (ECL) warning switch -F66- and move the coolant reservoir to the side with the coolant hoses -1, 2 and 3- still connected.

Note. Catch any leaking ATF with a cloth.

Remove the bolt -2- and the nut -3-.

Note. Ignore -1, 4, 5 and 6-.

Remove the bolts -2 through 5- connecting the engine to transmission. They are accessible from above.

Remove the left and right front wheels.

Remove the left and right drive axle cover -1- inside the wheel housing.

Remove the noise insulation. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the heat shield from the right drive axle.

Remove the bolts -arrows- and the left drive axle heat shield.

Remove left and right drive axles from transmission flange shafts.

CAUTIONThere is a risk of destroying the transmission control module (Mechatronic) with static discharge. Do not touch contacts in transmission connector with hands.

To discharge static electricity, touch the transmission housing (without wearing gloves).

Disconnect the connector on transmission by rotating screw connections counter-clockwise -arrow-.

Free up the electrical wiring harness on the transmission.

CAUTIONThe suspension components could be damaged. Do not rest the vehicle on its wheels if the subframe mount, the steering gear or the subframe crossbrace are not installed correctly.

All A4; A5 Coupe

Remove the nut -1- from the power steering hydraulic line.

Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the subframe crossbrace.

A5 Cabriolet

Remove the left and right bolt -2-.

Note. Ignore -1-.

Remove the bolt -2- for the power steering hydraulic line.

Remove the bolts -1- and -arrows- and the subframe crossbrace.

All Vehicles

CAUTIONThe airbag spiral spring could be damaged. Remove the steering column from the steering gear only when the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position. Do not change the steering wheel and steering gear position. Secure the steering wheel, for example using adhesive tape.

Lower the steering wheel as far as possible.

Turn the steering wheel into its center position (wheels in the straight-ahead position) and secure it.

Remove the bolt -arrow- from the steering column. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Remove the steering column from the steering gear and push it all the way up.

Disconnect the connectors -1- to the steering gear and -2- from the Engine Speed (RPM) sensor -G28-.

Remove the ball socket -1- on the selector lever cable from the selector shaft lever using the 80 - 200.

Remove the clip -2- and remove the selector lever cable from the transmission.

Note. Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

Remove the bolt -2-.

Press the tab in direction of -arrow B- and move it to the rear -arrow A-.

Remove the bolts -1- and -2- and remove the tab with the spring.

Remove the bolts -arrows- and the bracket.

CAUTIONThe decoupling elements in the front muffler could get damaged. Do not bend the decoupling elements in the front muffler more than 10°.

Loosen the clamping sleeves -1 and 2-, slide them back and tie up the left and right front mufflers to the left and right noise insulation with cable ties.

Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the driveshaft heat shield.

Remove the bolt that connects the driveshaft to the transmission by counterholding them with the T10172 and T10172/5.

Press the driveshaft together with rear final drive; the universal joint is able to slide axially.

Secure the driveshaft to the side.

Note. Catch any leaking ATF with a cloth.

Remove the bolts -1, 4, 5 and 6-.

Move the ATF pipe to the side.

Seal any open lines and connections with a clean plug from the VAS 6122.

Note. Ignore -2 and 3-.

Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission -arrow-.

Counterhold the crankshaft with the T10172 with adapter T10172/7 to loosen the torque converter bolts.

Note. When mounting, turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation -arrow-.

Remove the six torque converter bolts -arrow- while turning the crankshaft 60° further in the direction of engine rotation.

Remove the starter. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Note. The starter must be installed in order to install the locking piece -1- correctly in the starter opening when installing the transmission.

Remove the remaining bolts -6 through 11- that attach the engine to the transmission.

Position the V.A.G 1383 A and the T40173 under the transmission and secure it with the tensioning strap -1- as illustrated.

Note. The transmission support T40173 is not illustrated.

Remove the bolts from the tunnel crossmember -arrows-.

Press the transmission off the engine and lower it carefully using the V.A.G 1383 A.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Ring Spanner Insert AF16 V.A.G 1332/14
  2. Transportation Lock T40170

Procedure

Note. Replace bolts that are tightened to the specification. Replace self-locking nuts and bolts and seals, gaskets and O-rings. Secure all hose connections with hose clamps of the same type as those equipped by the factory. When installing, bring all cable ties back to same positions.

Transmission Installation Tightening Specifications: TRANSMISSION, INSTALLING .

Before installing a replacement transmission, always clean out the ATF cooler and ATF pipes using compressed air (maximum 10 bar). Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LINES, CLEANING .

Clean residue from the threaded holes in the cylinder block using a thread tap before installing.

When installing a replacement transmission, install the transmission support, the transmission mounting and the tunnel crossmember on the new transmission. Refer to TUNNEL CROSSMEMBER, TRANSMISSION MOUNT AND TRANSMISSION SUPPORT OVERVIEW .

Mount the transmission onto the T40173 and secure it using the tension strap -1- as illustrated.

The following preparations must be made before connecting the engine and transmission

Turn the torque converter so that hole next to the notch -arrow- is visible in the lower cut-out in the transmission housing as illustrated.

Note. There is only 1 notch on the circumference; rotate the torque converter as needed.

Insert the T40170 in the transmission housing from below and secure it on the flange shaft -1-.

Check if the alignment sleeves -A- for centering the engine/transmission are in the cylinder block and insert them if they are not.

Inspect the aluminum bolts used to connect the engine to the transmission to see if they can be used again and mark them, if necessary TRANSMISSION, INSTALLING .

Attach the transmission to the engine and the tighten the bolts -1 and 6 through 11-.

Remove the T40170.

Clip the locking piece -1- into the starter opening.

  1. The locking piece -1- must be installed so that it fits correctly -arrows-.

Note. There are different versions of the locking piece depending on the engine. Apply some grease to the locking piece if it is difficult to install the starter.

Install the starter. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Raise the transmission and tighten the tunnel crossmember bolts -arrows-. Refer to TUNNEL CROSSMEMBER, TRANSMISSION MOUNT AND TRANSMISSION SUPPORT OVERVIEW .

Loosen the tension strap and remove the V.A.G 1383 A with the T40173 from under the transmission.

Note. The following step is necessary to make sure the torque converter rests on the drive plate evenly and is not tilted.

Press the torque converter -2- against the drive plate -3- slightly in the direction of the -arrow- using an assembly lever -1-.

Attach the torque converter to the drive plate as follows

Note. Use the ring spanner insert AF16 V.A.G 1332/14 to tighten.

Install the first bolt -arrow- and tighten by hand (2 Nm).

Turn the crankshaft 180° in direction of engine rotation -arrow- using the T10172 with T10172/7

With the crankshaft in this position, tighten the bolt -arrow- to 60 Nm.

Continue turning the crankshaft 60° and tighten the remaining 5 bolts to the tightening specification.

Tighten the remaining bolts -2 through 5-.

Install in reverse order of removal paying attention to the following

Attach the steering column to the steering gear. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Install the subframe crossbrace. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Install selector lever cable. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE .

Install the ATF pipes. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION COOLER AND LINES OVERVIEW .

Attach the left and right drive axles to the transmission flange shafts. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Install the driveshaft heat shield TRANSMISSION, INSTALLING .

Install the driveshaft. Refer to Removal and Installation or Removal and Installation .

Reconnect exhaust system making sure it is not under stress. Refer to Description and Operation .

Install the noise insulation. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Install the bulkhead plenum chamber. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Connect the battery. Refer to Removal and Installation .

CAUTIONThere is a risk of destroying control modules with excess voltage. Do not use a charger as a starting aid.

Check the selector lever cable and adjust if necessary. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, ADJUSTING .

Check the ATF level and correct if necessary. Refer to ATF, CHECKING LEVEL AND CORRECTING .

TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS

Note. The tightening specifications apply only to lightly greased, oiled, phosphated or blackened nuts and bolts. Additional lubricant such as engine or transmission oil may be used, but do not use graphite lubricant. Do not use any ungreased parts. Tightening specification tolerance: ± 15%.

CAUTIONTransmission components could be damaged if they are not set down correctly. Do not set the transmission on the ATF pan.
WARNINGAn accident could result if the transmission is not secured correctly. Exchange the bolt on the 3311 for a new, longer 3311/1. Only this way can the transmission be secured.

Procedure

  1. Transmission secured with the shop crane VAS 6100. Refer to «TRANSMISSION, TRANSPORTING»(/audi/a5/i-2007-2011/remont/transmission-control-systems/#controls-housing-automatic-transmission-0b6-awd-coupe__transmission-transporting) .

Install the VW 309 on the hook and support tool 3311.

Place the transmission into the VAS 6095 using the VAS 6100.

Note. The vents for the transmission housing and final drive must be closed before turning a filled transmission with oil pan upward on the engine and transmission holder.
