GENERAL INFORMATION

Energy Management

All Infotainment control modules, including those for Navigation, are connected to the energy management system. This means the MOST-bus will shut off if there is a poor energy balance in the vehicle. Depending on the state of the battery there are different switch-off levels which have an effect on the different control modules. Navigation is no longer possible after the applicable level is activated.

Transportation Mode

The CD player inside the navigation control unit is locked when the vehicle is in transportation mode. The lock can be cancelled via an adaptation channel inside the control module or using a test program.

Pop-Out Button, Activating and Deactivating

In some cases, for example on rental cars, there may be a request to lock the pop-out button on the navigation control module. It is possible to engage the lock by changing the value on the appropriate adaptation channel.

Operating Requirements

Note. The MOST-bus will continue to run for a certain amount of time with terminal 15 ignition on and without pressing the button on the multimedia control head -E380-. After this time period runs out or depending on the operating condition of the MOST-bus, either a terminal 15 ignition on signal must occur or the ON/OFF button on the multimedia system control head must be operated in order to continue the navigation.

2ND GENERATION MMI BASIC COMPONENTS

The navigation system has many control modules which are inter linked with the individual vehicle systems. These control modules communicate with each other via the different bus versions. The data bus on board diagnostic interface -J533-, which is connected to all the different bus versions, processes the data and sends it to the control module.

Note. Manual transmission vehicles also have a vehicle electrical system control module -J519- and a transmission range gear recognition switch -F208- which recognize the drive direction. Automatic transmission vehicles have a multifunction switch -F125- and a transmission control module -J217- which recognize the drive direction.

Note. AWD vehicles have two extra sensors, the right rear ABS wheel speed sensor -G44- and the left rear ABS wheel speed sensor -G46-.

SATELLITE NAVIGATION

General Information and Components

A simple satellite navigation system requires only a navigation control module and a navigation system antenna -R50-. Vehicle-specific information is not needed.

Function

Each time the navigation system is turned on, the navigation control module attempts to receive signals from GPS satellites via the navigation system antenna. The signal from 4 satellites are needed for an exact positioning. This way the position of the receivers can be calculated at any point on the earth. The satellites transmit, in milliseconds, the identification code, the location, and the exact clock time. The GSP in the navigation control module receives the data through the navigation system antenna. Using the clock time, the navigation control module calculates how long it took to receive the data. When the navigation computer receives the data from at least 4 satellites it can then determine the location of the vehicle.

Service Information

Satellite navigation will be disabled if, for example, the navigation system antenna is faulty or when driving through a tunnel.

In the 2nd generation MMI, information regarding the satellites and the condition of the navigation system antenna can be read in measured value block 5 in the navigation control module.

Note. The number of satellites being received is displayed in the MMI. Press the NAV Info button while the navigation is on. The number of satellites being received will appear either at the top or at the bottom, depending on the generation of the MMI.

After starting the vehicle when it is cold, it may take up to 10 minutes until GPS data starts being received.

Audi vehicles which are equipped with a navigation system will use the system whenever possible.

COMPOUND NAVIGATION

General Information and Components

Compound navigation consists of the navigation control module with a gyro module, the navigation system antenna -R50-, the ABS control module -J104-, and the front ABS wheel speed sensors -G45, G47-. Compound navigation makes navigation possible when a GPS signal is temporarily not available.

Note. AWD vehicles have two extra sensors, the right rear ABS wheel speed sensor -G44- and the left rear ABS wheel speed sensor -G46-.

Function

Audi navigation systems use the number of pulses from the speed sensors for compound navigation. The number of pulses from the front axle is calculated by the ABS control module based on the signals from the front ABS wheel speed sensors and then sent to the combi/chassis-CAN. The data bus on board diagnostic interface -J533- reads the data from the combi/chassis-CAN and then sends it to the navigation control module using the MOST-bus. The navigation control module contains a gyro module that recognizes turning movements and changes in the drive direction. Both values, speed and turning, make up the compound navigation.

Service Information

There must be a GPS signal present when starting navigation in order to determine the location of the vehicle. Compound navigation is not possible if the vehicle location was not determined beforehand by satellite navigation.

Audi vehicles which are equipped with a navigation system will use the system whenever possible.

VEHICLE NAVIGATION

General Information and Components

All components in satellite navigation and compound navigation are needed for vehicle navigation. The radio -R- is also needed for trip guidance. The navigation control module uses all the data from the satellite navigation and the compound navigation to establish the actual location of the vehicle. To be even more exact, the calculated route is compared several times every second with the map stored on whatever media is present (CD, DVD, or hard drive).

Function

  1. The requested route is entered using either the multimedia control head -E380- controls, which are connected to the navigation control module via a serial interface, or by using the optional speech recognition system.
  2. The location of the end destination is determined using the stored road map.
  3. The actual location is calculated using GPS data received through the navigation system antenna -R50-, which is connected directly to back of the navigation control module by a coaxial cable.
  4. The location of the vehicle is determined to within +/- 5 meters by compound navigation and comparing to the digital map.
  5. The radio receives the TMC signal via the RDS channel in the FM band. The radio sends this data to the navigation control module via the MOST-bus.
  6. The navigation control module calculates the distance, the driving directions, changes in the driving direction, etc., using the TMC information.
  7. The digital prompts are shown in the front information display control head -J685-, which is connected directly to the navigation control module.
  8. The prompts may be displayed via the instrument cluster control module -J285-. The navigation control module also sends the prompts to the MOST-bus. The data bus on board diagnostic interface -J533- then sends these to the instrument cluster control module via the combi/chassis -CAN.
  9. The digital sound system control module -J525- emits acoustical messages via the connected boxes. Audi output is sent from the navigation control module to the digital sound system control module via the MOST-bus.
  10. The pulses and change in direction values received from the compound navigation calculate the distance travelled.

Note. The difference between the reverse gear in an automatic transmission and a manual transmission vehicle is recognized.

Reverse Gear Recognition in Manual Transmission Vehicles

Engaging reverse gear activates the transmission range gear recognition switch -F208-. The vehicle electrical system control module -J519- recognizes that reverse gear is engaged by the resistance coding from the switch and then sends the information >>reverse gear<< via the data bus.

Reverse Gear Recognition in Automatic Transmission Vehicles

By moving the selector lever, the multifunction switch -F125- tells the transmission to engage reverse gear. When reverse gear is engaged, a message is sent to the transmission control module -J217-. The control module transmits the information reverse gear via the data bus. The data bus on board diagnostic interface forwards this information to the MOST-bus and is then evaluated by the navigation control module. The navigation control module recognizes if the vehicle is moving forward or backward.

  1. The system monitors if the driving prompts are being followed. The driver will be informed if he/she deviates from the recommended route. If the driver remains on this route, then the distance to the final destination will be calculated once again.
  2. If the navigation control module receives TMC information that affects the route, the route will be calculated again based on these new values. Traffic jams, road construction, etc., on the calculated route will appear as symbols in the front information display control head. Traffic jams, road construction, etc. outside of the route will have a gray background.
  3. Once the final destination is reached, the driver will hear "You have reached your destination."

Service Information

Note. The following applies only to 2nd generation MMI if the vehicle has a navigation system with CD drive control module -J401-.

Whenever a DVD is inserted, it will always check if the software on the DVD and in the control module match. If the software is not identical, then the software on the DVD will be flashed onto the navigation control module regardless if it is newer or older. This process is necessary to prevent faults in the navigation system because the software on the DVD is closely connected to the navigation data bank.
