DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

WARNINGAccidental air bag deployment is possible. Personal injury may result. Read and follow all WARNINGS and AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS before working on air bag system or related components.

The air bag restraint system is designed to provide increased protection for driver and passengers by deploying front air bags and front and rear seat belt pretensioners in front-end collision and head and side air bags when side impact is detected. The system is designed to be used with 3-point seat belts.

Main components of the system include driver-side air bag module, passenger-side air bag module, driver and passenger seat-mounted side air bag modules, left and right head air bag modules, front and rear seat belt pretensioners, air bag control module, front and side air bag impact (crash) sensors, data link connector, spiral spring assembly (under steering wheel, in steering column) and air bag malfunction indicator light. (Scheme 1)& (Scheme 2).

Air bag control module is capable of system self-diagnostics. Air bag system components are monitored electrically and any interferences in operation can be detected. These interferences (faults) are then stored in air bag control module memory. Air bag control module memory differentiates between types of faults. After diagnosis and servicing, fault memory can be erased.

COMPONENT LOCATIONS

Refer to illustration for restraint system component locations. (Scheme 1)& (Scheme 2).

SERVICING

Manufacturer recommends replacing main air bag system components (air bag modules, seat belt pretensioners, spiral spring and air bag control module) every 14 years. Replacement year and month appear on sticker located on driver-side B-pillar. Sticker must be updated when components are replaced.

On Cabriolet, test rollover protection system every 2 years regardless of mileage. Use Guided Fault Finding procedure contained in VAS 5051 tester to perform air bag control module output operation test.

SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK

Turn ignition switch to ON position. AIR BAG warning light should turn on for about 4 seconds, then turn off. If AIR BAG warning light remains on or does not turn on at any time, go to DIAGNOSTICS .

AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Observe these precautions when working with air bag systems

  1. Disable air bag system before servicing any part of system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/airbag/#air-bag-restraint-systems__disabling-activating-air-bag-system) .
  2. DO NOT use test light, ohmmeter or voltmeter to test air bag system, except when testing spiral spring.
  3. Use only Scan Tool (VAG 1551/1552), Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051) or equivalent scan tool, with appropriate adapter to test air bag system.
  4. DO NOT open, disassembled or repair air bag system components. Always use NEW components.
  5. DO NOT use air bag system components that have been dropped from 20" (0.5 m) or higher. Replace air bag components that are mechanically damaged.
  6. DO NOT leave undeployed air bag system components unattended. Install components in vehicle immediately after removing from packaging.
  7. Ensure trim cover faces up when placing undeployed air bag modules on bench or other surface.
  8. DO NOT allow chemical cleaners, oil, or grease to contact vinyl covering on air bag modules.
  9. DO NOT expose air bag modules to temperatures greater than 212°F (100°C).
  10. Use only original equipment seat covers designed for use with side air bags (identified by label on fabric).
  11. Inspect A-, B-, C- and D-pillar trim panels for damage prior to installing head air bag. Replace any damaged trim panels. Never attempt to repair trim panels.
  12. Remove entire head air bag module before performing any repairs behind it.
  13. Always carry head air bag in folded position.

CENTERING SPIRAL SPRING

If spiral spring is twisted, it must be centered before installation. From central position, spiral spring must be able to turn approximately 3 1/2 turns in both directions.

DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM

Note. Obtain radio security code before disconnecting battery.

To disable air bag system, ensure ignition is off, then disconnect and shield negative battery cable. No waiting time is necessary after disconnecting battery. To activate air bag system, turn ignition on, ensure no one is in vehicle, then reconnect negative battery cable. Perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .

DISPOSAL PROCEDURES

Note. Disposal of undeployed air bag may violate federal, state and/or local laws. If scrapping vehicle, air bags and pretensioners must be removed from vehicle and deployed. If air bag cannot be deployed, contact vehicle manufacturer for further instructions.

DEPLOYED AIR BAG OR PRETENSIONER

Wear gloves and safety glasses when handling deployed air bag modules and seat belt pretensioners. Seal deployed air bag modules and seat belt pretensioners in plastic bag and dispose of like any other part.

UNDEPLOYED AIR BAG OR PRETENSIONER-FAULTY UNIT

If an undeployed air bag module or seat belt pretensioner is diagnosed as faulty, remove faulty device and return intact to manufacturer for proper disposal. Device must be packaged and shipped according to U.S. Department of Transportation procedures. Retain replacement packaging including label. DO NOT deploy air bag or pretensioner.

SCRAPPED VEHICLE

Undeployed air bags and seat belt pretensioners must be removed and deployed before scrapping vehicle. Use Deployment Device (J-44210), and follow instructions in Air Bag & Pyrotechnic Deployment Device Instruction Booklet.

POST-COLLISION INSPECTION

When a vehicle has been involved in a collision, certain components of the passive restraint system must be inspected or replaced. See AIR BAG/SRS COMPONENT INSPECTION & REPLACEMENT TABLES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.
