Removal & Installation Audi A4 B5

Timing Belt 4 illustrations ~328 words
CAUTIONThis application is an interference engine. Do not rotate camshaft or crankshaft when timing belt is removed, or engine damage may occur.
CAUTIONBefore removal, mark an arrow indicating direction of rotation on accessory drive belt or timing belt. Damage may result if belts are installed in opposite direction of rotation.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove accessory drive belt guard. Hold accessory drive belt in place with Mandrel (3204). Using a 15-mm wrench at accessory drive belt tensioner, slacken and remove accessory drive belt.
  2. Rotate crankshaft by hand until cylinder No. 3 is at TDC. Ensure notch "A" is aligned with notch "B". (Scheme 1) Note locating plate on front end of each camshaft sprocket. If large hole in each plate does not face inward, toward center of engine, rotate crankshaft one revolution.
  3. Remove Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor from left side of cylinder block, behind oil filter and above oil pan. Insert finger in CKP sensor hole. TDC hole in crankshaft should be felt. Install Crankshaft Holding Tool (Audi 3242) in CKP sensor hole. (Scheme 2) Lightly tighten crankshaft holder.
  4. Remove crankshaft vibration damper. Remove lower timing belt guard. Install Camshaft Holding Tool (Audi 3243). (Scheme 3) Loosen camshaft sprocket bolts about 3 turns. DO NOT remove bolts. Remove camshaft holder. Using puller, loosen camshaft sprockets. Loosen and remove timing belt. (Scheme 4) NOTE: Camshaft sprockets must be loose enough to rotate on camshaft, but not loose enough to tilt.

Installation

CAUTIONCamshaft sprockets are not keyed nor do they have alignment marks. Alignment of camshafts for proper valve timing is accomplished through the camshaft locking plates located on end of camshaft, between camshaft sprocket and retaining bolts. The larger hole on both of the camshaft locking plates should point toward the center of the engine when number one cylinder is at TDC (compression stroke). To properly align the camshafts, the camshaft holder (3243) must be used.
  1. Position timing belt over camshaft sprockets. (Scheme 4) Install camshaft holder. Position timing belt over all sprockets, then position over tensioner. Lightly tighten tensioner bolt (ensure tensioner can be rotated by hand).
  2. Tighten belt by rotating tensioner on bolt. Tighten belt until it can be twisted 90 degrees by hand at midway point between right camshaft sprocket and water pump pulley. Tighten tensioner bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155373-S18642973612003061300000).
  3. Tighten camshaft sprocket bolts to specification. Remove camshaft holding tool. Remove crankshaft holding tool. Install Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. To install accessory drive belt, install mandrel. Position accessory drive belt over drive sprockets and idler roller, then over tensioner roller. Remove mandrel. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Adjust drive belts to proper tension. Connect negative battery cable.
