DESCRIPTION
Starter is a brush-type, series-wound electric motor with an overrunning clutch and reduction gear. (Scheme 5) Field frame is enclosed by commutator end frame and drive bushing. Field frame carries pole shoes and field coils. A splined armature shaft drive end carries drive assembly.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
Note. For additional trouble shooting, see the TROUBLE SHOOTING - BASIC PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.
STARTER DOES NOT CRANK ENGINE
Note. On A/T vehicles, also check park/neutral switch.
- Ensure battery is fully charged, engine-to-body ground strap is connected and all cable connections are clean and tight. With ignition switch in crank position, check voltage at starter solenoid wire terminal. If reading is 8 volts or greater, go to step 3). If reading is less than 8 volts, go to next step.
- Check voltage at Black/Yellow wire terminal of ignition switch. If reading is at least 8 volts, repair circuit between ignition switch and starter solenoid. If reading is less than 8 volts, replace ignition switch.
- With ignition switch in start position, check voltage at bottom (armature) terminal of starter solenoid. If reading is at least 8 volts, repair or replace starter. If reading is less than 8 volts, replace starter solenoid.
STARTER CRANKS TOO SLOWLY
Ensure battery is fully charged. Ensure all cable connections are clean and tight. Ensure ground strap, located between transmission and body, is clean and tight. Ensure engine crankcase is filled with oil of recommended viscosity. If starter still turns slowly, repair or replace starter.

- With ignition switched off, disconnect battery Ground (GND) wire.
- Remove right front wheel. Secure brake disc with a wheel bolt.
- Loosen the fasteners - 1 and 2 (arrow) and remove the noise insulation, if equipped. (Scheme 1) (Scheme 1): Removing/Installing Insulation
- Remove right driveshaft heat shield - 1 -. (Scheme 2) (Scheme 2): Removing/Installing Right Driveshaft Heat Shield
- On vehicles with M/T, disconnect the wires - 3 - and - 4 - from the starter. Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 - and remove starter. For the sake of illustration, the figure depicts engine support as removed. (Scheme 3) (Scheme 3): Removing/Installing Starter (M/T)
- On vehicles with A/T, detach right driveshaft from transmission flange shaft. Disconnect electrical wires - 2 - and - 3 - from starter. Remove bolts - 1 - and - 4 - and remove starter. For the sake of illustration, the figure depicts engine support as removed. (Scheme 4) (Scheme 4): Removing/Installing Starter (A/T)
- To install, reverse removal procedure observing the following: Screw right driveshaft onto flange shaft. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/a4/b5-1994-1999/remont/starter/#starters__torque-specifications). Connect battery.
