Transaxle

For models produced from 1996-1997, check fluid level at 15,000 mile intervals. For models produced from 1998 and on, check fluid level at 20,000 mile intervals. On all models, fluid is filled for life. No changing is required.

Center Differential & Final Drives

Check fluid level at 20,000 mile intervals. Fluid is filled for life. No changing is required.

CHECKING FLUID LEVELS

Note. ATF level is affected by ATF temperature. Checking ATF level at too low a temperature leads to overfilling. Checking ATF level at too high a temperature leads to under filling. Overfilling or under filling transaxle can lead to transaxle malfunction.

Note. When ATF level is checked, seal on level plug must always be replaced. VAG Scan Tool (1551) and Diagnosis Cable (1551/3B) are required to check ATF level. Scan tool is used to measure ATF temperature. Follow aftermarket scan tool manufacturer instructions (if applicable) to check ATF temperature.

Note. Some models are equipped with auxiliary ATF cooler. An additional test procedure MAY be required for these vehicles when checking fluid level. See 01V Transaxle (With Auxiliary ATF Cooler) .

  2. Secure container of ATF filler tools (V.A.G. 1924), or equivalent, as high up on vehicle as possible. Raise and support vehicle. Place drip tray (V.A.G. 1306) under transaxle.
  3. Once an ATF temperature of 95°F (35°C) is reached, remove ATF check plug (2) and drain excess ATF if necessary. (Scheme 15) If ATF exits from the ATF filler plug hole before the ATF reaches 104°F (40°C), the ATF level is OK. Add ATF if no ATF has escaped from the ATF check plug hole by 104°F (40°C). NOTE: ATF check plug must be closed again by 113°F (45°C) at the latest. For warm countries, check plug must be closed again by 122°F (50°C).
  4. If fluid level (3) is okay, install NEW seal on inspection plug and tighten to 59 ft. lbs. (80 N.m).
  5. If additional fluid is required, using ATF Fill Tool (V.A.G. 1924), carefully insert fill hose through an opening in deflector cap. (Scheme 16) Fill until ATF runs out of inspection hole.
  6. Install NEW seal on inspection plug and tighten to 59 ft. lbs. (80 N.m). Turn engine off.

FRONT DIFFERENTIAL/TRANSAXLE HOUSING DOUBLE SEALING RING

Note. A faulty double sealing ring will allow ATF or gear oil to escape into converter housing through center breather (between 2 sealing lips) of shaft seal. Faulty double sealing ring can also allow ATF to get into differential section of transaxle. Differential section becomes overfilled and oil escapes from breather.

INTERNAL OIL LINE

CAUTIONFaulty "O" rings on internal oil line allow ATF to enter differential. Differential then becomes overfilled and oil will seep out of breather holes of differential. If an oil line is removed, it should generally be replaced. Oil line should only be inserted using Fitting Tool (3381). Otherwise there is a danger of oil line becoming bent, which will cause leaks to occur.
