General Troubleshooting Information
The Hands Freelink (HFL) works only with an approved Bluetooth enabled cell phones with the Hands Free Profile. If you are not sure if your cell phone is compatible with the HFL - and not all phones are - Acura has a dedicated call center and web-site to answer your questions on the web. Go to www.acuraHandsFreelink.com or www.acura.com or dial 888-528-7876 for further assistance. The call center is open Monday thru Friday from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm CST, Saturday from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm CST, and Sunday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm CST.
Note. The HFL support desk should always be referred to when there are any questions or concerns not covered in this article, the owner's manual or the quick start guide.
The HFL gives the user the convenience of hands-free operation. It can't control the phone's performance (call quality and signal strength). To avoid performance problems, don't put the phones in a metal briefcase, in the trunk or in a purse under the seat.
This guide shows you just a few of the HFL's many features. You will see how to pair your phone to the HFL, and then make and receive calls, all using simple voice commands. If you want a complete description of this system, please refer to the owner's manual and quick start guide.
Voice Control Tips
To give any voice command, press and release the HFL TALK button. Always wait for the beep, then give your command in a clear, natural voice. The HFL microphone is on the ceiling, by the front spotlights. To improve HFL voice recognition, make sure the moonroof and all the windows are fully closed. Keep conversation among other passengers to a minimum. Turn the blower speed down, and turn the dash vents away from the HFL microphone. Sometimes background noise (i.e. rough roads or rain) can adversely affect HFL voice recognition. If this is the case, pull the vehicle off the road or park the vehicle in a sheltered area and try again.
If the HFL doesn't recognize your voice command, you'll hear "Pardon". If after repeating your command, it still doesn't recognize it, you'll hear "Please repeat". If after repeating your command again, it still doesn't recognize it, the HFL sends you to the Help menu.
To hear a list of available options at any time, say "Hands free help".
You can give many voice commands together. For example, you can say "Dial 123-456-7890".
To give a string of numbers in a call or dial voice command, you can say them all at once, or separate them into blocks of 3, 4, 7, 10, or 11.
To skip a voice prompt, press and release the TALK button while the HFL is speaking. The HFL begins listening for your next voice command.
To go back a step in a voice command sequence, press and release the Back button, or say "Go back".
If you don't say anything while the HFL is listening for your voice command, it will time out and stop its voice recognition. The next time you press and release the TALK button, the HFL begins listening from the point where it timed out.
To stop a voice command sequence at any time, press and hold the BACK button, or press and release the TALK button, wait for the beep, and say "Cancel". The next time you press and release the TALK button, the HFL begins from its main menu. You'll see MAIN MENU on the multi-information display (MID) in the instrument panel.
When you're done with a voice command sequence, the HFL goes back to its main menu. The next time you press and release the TALK button, you'll be at the main menu and you'll see MAIN MENU on the MID.
Remember to press and hold the BACK button until you exit the main menu, otherwise, the audio system stays muted.
Pairing Your Cell Phone (A One Time Procedure)
You must pair a Bluetooth compatible the phone to the HFL before you can make and receive calls. The following steps show you what you need to do. For specific pairing instructions on the web go to www.acura.com or contact Acura's call center at 888-528-7876. You can also refer to the phone's user manual or call the phone retailer. Make sure the vehicle is stationary when you pair the phone.
Note. You cannot pair a phone if the vehicle is moving. Your phone must be in its Discovery mode. Up to six Bluetooth compatible phones can be paired by the HFL. Not all Bluetooth phones are compatible with the HFL. For a current list of approved Bluetooth phones, visit www.acura.com.
- Turn on your phone, and follow the prompts to activate Bluetooth.
- Give these voice commands to the HFL by pressing the HFL talk button. PHONE STATUS REFERENCE You say You'll hear "Phone setup" "Phone setup options are status, pair, edit, delete, and list." "Pair" "The pairing process requires operation of your mobile phone. For safety, only perform this function while the vehicle is stopped. State a four-digit code for pairing. Note this code, it will be requested by the phone." "1. 2. 3. 4." (This can be any four-digit code you want.) "1. 2. 3. 4. is this correct?" "Yes" "Searching for a Bluetooth phone. Make sure the phone you are trying to pair is in Discovery mode !"
- Follow the cell phone manufacture's instructions to put the phone in its Discovery mode. The phone will search for the HFL. When you see Hands Freelink in the device list on the phone, select it.
- When prompted, enter the four-digit PIN from step 2 into the phone. You will hear the HFL say "A new phone has been found. Would you like to name this phone?"
- Press and release the HFL talk button, and say what the phone name will be. For example, say "John's phone". You'll hear "John's phone has been successfully paired". Returning to the main menu. "# When the phone is paired to the HFL, you'll also see a phone icon in the subdisplay in the dashboard."
- To pair another phone, repeat steps 1 thru 5 .
Clearing the HFL system
Note. This operation clears the HFL system of all passcode(s), any paired phones, and all names in the HFL phonebook. Clearing the HFL system is recommend before selling the vehicle. If the system is locked and the pass code is lost or forgotten, see the symptom troubleshooting.
- Press and release the HFL Talk button. After the beep, say "System clear" and the HFL system will respond, "This process will clear all paired phone, clear all entries in the phonebook, clear the passcode and restore all defaults in the system setup. Is this what you would like to do?".
- Press and release the HFL Talk button. After the beep, say "Yes" and the HFL system responds, "Preparing to clear all paired phone, all phonebook entries, the passcode. This may take up to 2 minutes to complete".
Self-diagnostic Function
Note. This procedure should be used only if the HDS is unavailable. To run the self-diagnostic function, do the following
- Turn the ignition switch to ACC (I).
- Press and hold the HFL BACK button for more than 5 seconds.
- When the Hands Freelink system enters the self-diagnostic function, the word "DIAGNOSTIC MODE" is displayed on the multi-information display (MID) on the gauge control module. If the system has not completed testing for DTCs, the Hands Freelink control unit audibly outputs "The hands free system test is in progress". If there are no DTCs, the Hands Freelink control unit audibly outputs "The hands free system is OK". If there are any DTCs, the Hands Freelink control unit audibly outputs "The hands free system needs to be serviced".
Note. The self-diagnostic function can only be initiated while the HFL is in its idle state. The self-diagnostic function is considered to start once the 5 seconds press and hold is detected, and ends when the units returns to idle state.
Exiting the Self-diagnostic Mode
Press the HFL BACK button and exit the self-diagnostic mode.

SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING INDEX
HFL System Troubleshooting
Note. You must be able to duplicate the client's concern to successfully diagnose and the problem. Always use the client's phone. Make sure the phone is approved and configured correctly. On-line, go to www.acura.com, or call the HFL support desk at 888-528-7876 for further assistance.
- Connect the HDS to the DLC.
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Check for DTCs. Are any DTCs indicated? YES - Repair the indicated DTCs and recheck. NO - Go to step 4.
- Try to duplicate the problem. Can you duplicate the problem? YES - Go to step 5. NO - The system is OK at this time.
- Pair the phone to a known-good vehicle (same model, year, and trim), and try to duplicate the problem. Does the phone have the same problem on the known-good vehicle? YES - Call the HFL support desk at 888-528-7876 to make sure the phone is configured correctly and has the correct software. If the phone is configured correctly, it is either a characteristic of the HFL system, or a characteristic of the particular approved phone being used. Explain to your client that this is a system characteristic. Another phone from the approved phone list may give more favorable results. NO - Substitute a known-good Hands Freelink control unit and recheck. If the problem goes away, replace the original Hands Freelink control unit.

Control Unit Input Test/Replacement
Note. Before testing, troubleshoot the multiplex integrated control system using B-CAN System Diagnosis Test Mode A (see TROUBLESHOOTING - B-CAN SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS TEST MODE A ).

- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Remove the right kick panel (see «FRONT DOOR SILL AREA»(/acura/tsx/i-2003-2008/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim__front-door-sill-area) ).
- Disconnect the 22P connector (A) from the Hands Freelink control unit (B).
- Inspect the connector and socket terminals for a good pin fit to be sure they are all making good contact. If the terminals are bent, loose or corroded, repair them as necessary, and recheck the system. If the terminals look OK, go to step 5.
- With the connector still disconnected, make these input tests at the connector. If any test indicates a problem, find and correct the cause, then recheck the system. If all the input tests prove OK, go to step 6. - Reconnect the 22P connector to the Hands Freelink control unit, and connector X (39P) to the under-dash fuse/ relay box.
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and make these input tests at the connector. If any test indicates a problem, find and correct the cause, then recheck the system. If all input test prove OK, the Hands Freelink control unit must be faulty; replace it. - Disconnect the 22P connector from the Hands Freelink control unit.
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Measure the voltage between the Hands Freelink control unit 22P connector terminal No. 9 and body ground. Is there battery voltage? YES - Replace the shielded harness. NO - Go to step 10.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Remove the front individual map light, and disconnect the ambient light 10P connector (see «FRONT INDIVIDUAL MAP LIGHT REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/i-2003-2008/remont/interiorillumination-lights/#interior-lights) ).
- Check for continuity between the Hands Freelink control unit 22P connector terminal No. 9 and ambient light 10P connector terminal No. 7. Is there continuity? YES - Substitute a known-good Hands Freelink control unit, then recheck. If the symptom goes away, replace the original Hands Freelink control unit. NO - Repair open in the wire.
DTC B1776: Microphone Input/Output Short to Ground/Open

- Disconnect the 22P connector from the Hands Freelink control unit.
- Check for continuity between the Hands Freelink control unit 22P connector terminal No. 10 and body ground, then between No. 8 and No. 9. Is there continuity? YES - Repair short to body ground in the wire. NO - Go to step 9.
- Check the vehicle's trim level. Is the vehicle navigation system equipped? YES - Go to step 10. NO - Substitute a known-good Hands Freelink control unit, then recheck. If the symptom goes away, replace the original Hands Freelink control unit.
- Disconnect the 14P connector from the navigation unit.
- Check for continuity between the Hands Freelink control unit 22P connector terminal No. 22 and body ground, then between No. 20 and No. 21. Is there continuity? YES - Repair short in the wire. NO - Substitute a known-good Hands Freelink control unit, then recheck. If the symptom goes away, replace the original Hands Freelink control unit. If the symptom is still present, replace the navigation unit.
Note. If you are troubleshooting multiple DTCs, be sure to follow the instructions in B-CAN system diagnosis test mode A (see TROUBLESHOOTING - B-CAN SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS TEST MODE A ). Information marked with an asterisk (*) applies to the switch with navigation system.

- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), then start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel back and forth several times.
- Check for DTCs with the HDS. Is DTC B1779 indicated? YES - Go to step 5. NO - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Do the HFL switch test (see «HFL SWITCH/HFL-VOICE CONTROL SWITCH TEST/REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/i-2003-2008/remont/entertainment-systems/#handsfreelink-system) ). Is the switch OK? YES - Go to step 7. NO - Replace the HFL switch or HFL-voice control switch* (see «HFL SWITCH/HFL-VOICE CONTROL SWITCH TEST/REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/i-2003-2008/remont/entertainment-systems/#handsfreelink-system) ).
- Remove the Hands Freelink control unit (see «CONTROL UNIT INPUT TEST/REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/i-2003-2008/remont/entertainment-systems/#handsfreelink-system__control-unit-input-testreplacement) ).
- Disconnect the 22P connector from the Hands Freelink control unit.
- Disconnect the 5P connector from the HFL switch or HFL-voice control switch*.
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Measure the voltage on HFL switch connector terminal No. 3 and body ground. Is there voltage? YES - Repair short to power in the PUR wire. NO - Go to step 12.
- Check for continuity between the Hands Freelink control unit 22P connector terminal No. 2 and HFL switch or HFL-voice control switch* 5P connector terminal No. 3. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 13. NO - Repair open in the PUR wire between the switch, cable reel and Hands Freelink control unit.
- Check for continuity between the HFL or HFL-voice control switch 5P connector No. 2 terminal and the audio unit connector A (20P) terminal No. 11. Is there continuity? YES - Check for loose or poor connections at the audio unit, Hands Freelink control unit and HFL switch or HFL-voice control switch. If the connections are OK, substitute a known-good Hands Freelink control unit. If the problem is gone, replace the original Hands Freelink control unit. NO - Repair open in the wire between the switch, cable reel, and the audio unit.
Note. Information marked with an asterisk (*) applies to the switch with navigation system. If you are troubleshooting multiple DTCs, be sure to follow the instructions in B-CAN system diagnosis test mode A (see TROUBLESHOOTING - B-CAN SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS TEST MODE A ).

- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Clear the DTCs with the HDS.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), then start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel back and forth several times.
- Check for DTCs with the HDS. Is DTC B1780 indicated? YES - Go to step 5. NO - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Do the HFL switch test (see «HFL SWITCH/HFL-VOICE CONTROL SWITCH TEST/REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/i-2003-2008/remont/entertainment-systems/#handsfreelink-system) ). Is the switch OK? YES - Go to step 7. NO - Replace the HFL switch or HFL-voice control switch* (see «HFL SWITCH/HFL-VOICE CONTROL SWITCH TEST/REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/i-2003-2008/remont/entertainment-systems/#handsfreelink-system) ).
- Remove the Hands Freelink control unit (see «CONTROL UNIT INPUT TEST/REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/i-2003-2008/remont/entertainment-systems/#handsfreelink-system__control-unit-input-testreplacement) ).
- Disconnect the 22P connector from the Hands Freelink control unit.
- Disconnect the 5P connector from the HFL switch or HFL-voice control switch *.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Check for continuity between the Hands Freelink control unit 22P connector terminal No. 2 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Repair short in the wire, or replace the cable reel (see «CABLE REEL REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/i-2003-2008/remont/airbag/#srs-supplemental-restraint-system) ). NO - Replace the Hands Freelink control unit.
DTC B1792: Hands Freelink Control Unit Internal Error
- Clear the DTCs with the HDS.
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), and then back ON (II).
- Check for DTCs with the HDS. Is DTC B1792 indicated? YES - Replace the Hands Freelink control unit (see «CONTROL UNIT INPUT TEST/REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/i-2003-2008/remont/entertainment-systems/#handsfreelink-system__control-unit-input-testreplacement) ). NO - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.
- Connect the HDS to the DLC.
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Clear the DTCs with the HDS.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), and then ON (II).
- Check for DTCs with the HDS. Are there any DTCs indicated? YES - Repair the indicated DTCs and recheck. NO - Go to step 6.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Substitute a known-good Hands Freelink control unit.
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Check the MID display. Are the messages cleared? YES - Replace the original Hands Freelink control unit (see «CONTROL UNIT INPUT TEST/REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/i-2003-2008/remont/entertainment-systems/#handsfreelink-system__control-unit-input-testreplacement) ). NO - Replace the gauge control module (see «GAUGE CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/i-2003-2008/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#display-and-gauge-system__gauge-control-module-replacement) ).
The HFL system is locked and the pass code has been lost or forgotten
- Connect the HDS to the DLC.
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- From the "Body Electrical menu", then select "Hands Freelink".
- Select "Miscellaneous Tests", then select "Pass code reset".
- Follow the HDS system prompts to reset the pass code.

- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Check that the audio system is operating normally and the speaker sound levels from different audio sources (AM/FM, XM, CD, Navigation, etc.). Does the audio system work normally and is the audio output from the speaker normal when playing various audio sources? YES - Go to step 3. NO - Refer to the audio system symptom troubleshooting (see «SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING»(/acura/tsx/i-2003-2008/remont/entertainment-systems/#audio-system) ).
- Check the audio system when HFL messages are played. Dose the audio system mute when HFL messages are being played? YES - Go to step 4. NO - Go to step 10 .
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Remove the audio-HVAC display module (see «AUDIO-HVAC DISPLAY MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/tsx/i-2003-2008/remont/entertainment-systems/#audio-system__audio-hvac-display-module-removalinstallation) ), and disconnect audio unit connector D (5P). NOTE: Eject all the discs before removing the audio unit to prevent damaging the CD player's load mechanism.
- Disconnect Hands Freelink control unit 22P connector.
- Check for continuity between body ground and audio unit connector D (5P) terminal No. 3 and No. 4 individually. Is there continuity? YES - Short to body ground in the wire(s) between Hands Freelink control unit and audio unit. Replace the affected shielded harness. NO - Go to step 8.
- Check for continuity between the terminals o audio unit connector D (5P) according to the table. AUDIO UNIT CONNECTOR REFERENCE From terminal To terminals D3 D4, D5 D4 D5 Is there continuity between any of the terminals? YES - Short in the wire(s) between Hands Freelink control unit and audio unit. Replace the appropriate shielded harness. NO - Go to step 9.
- Check for continuity between Hands Freelink control unit 22P connector and audio unit connector D (5P) according to the table. AUDIO UNIT CONNECTOR REFERENCE HandsFreeLink control unit connector Audio unit connector 7 D4 19 D3 Is there continuity? YES - Substitute a known-good Hands Freelink control unit and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away, replace the original Hands Freelink control unit. If the symptom/indication is still present, replace the audio unit. NO - Open in the wire(s) between Hands Freelink control unit and audio unit. Replace the affected shielded harness.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Remove the audio-HVAC display module (see «AUDIO-HVAC DISPLAY MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/tsx/i-2003-2008/remont/entertainment-systems/#audio-system__audio-hvac-display-module-removalinstallation) ), and disconnect audio unit connector D (5P). NOTE: Eject all the discs before removing the audio unit to prevent damaging the CD player's load mechanism.
- Disconnect Hands Freelink control unit 22P connector.
- Check for continuity between body ground and audio unit connector D (5P) terminal No. 2. Is there continuity? YES - Repair short to body ground in the wire between Hands Freelink control unit and audio unit. NO - Go to step 14.
- Check for continuity between Hands Freelink control unit 22P connector terminal No. 4 and audio unit connector D (5P) terminal No. 2. Is there continuity? YES - Substitute a known-good Hands Freelink control unit and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away, replace the original Hands Freelink control unit. If the symptom/indication is still present, replace the audio unit. NO - Repair open in the wire between Hands Freelink control unit and audio unit.

- Remove the switch cover (A), then remove the two screws.
- Disconnect the 5P connector (B) and remove the HFL switch or HFL-voice control switch (C).
- Measure the resistance between the No. 3 and No. 2 terminals in each switch position according to the table. - If the resistance is not as specified, replace the remote switch.
