INTRODUCTION

Removal, overhaul and installation procedures (when given by manufacturer) are covered in this article. If component removal and installation is primarily an unbolt and bolt-on procedure, a torque specification may be all that is furnished.

Scheme 1

Scheme 1: Removal & Installation
  1. Remove negative battery cable. Remove crankshaft position sensor wiring connector located on right side of block, behind motor mount. (Scheme 1)
  2. Remove sensor mounting bolt and sensor. Before installing new sensor, inspect "O" ring for damaged or wear and replace if necessary.
  3. To install, lubricate "O" ring with engine oil and reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/acura/slx/i-1995-1999/remont/removal-installation/#engine-controls-removeinstalloverhaul__torque-specifications). NOTE: Ensure CKP sensor is fully seated and held stationary in front cover. Erratic operation and setting of false codes may result if not seated properly.

Removal & Installation

  1. Remove negative battery cable. Remove camshaft position senor wiring connector. Remove sensor mounting bolt and sensor from left timing belt cover.
  2. Before installing new sensor, inspect "O" ring for damaged or wear and replace if necessary.
  3. To install, lubricate "O" ring with engine oil and reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/acura/slx/i-1995-1999/remont/removal-installation/#engine-controls-removeinstalloverhaul__torque-specifications) .

KNOCK SENSOR (KS)

Note. DO NOT apply thread sealant to sensor threads. Sensor is coated at factory and applying additional sealant will affect sensor's ability to detect detonation.

  1. Allow engine to cool and drain cooling system. Remove upper and lower intake manifold. See «UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD»(/acura/slx/i-1995-1999/remont/removal-installation/#engine-controls-removeinstalloverhaul) and «LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD»(/acura/slx/i-1995-1999/remont/removal-installation/#engine-controls-removeinstalloverhaul) .
  2. Remove front bolt from bracket that secures upper coolant pipe. Remove by-pass hose from upper coolant pipe. Remove upper radiator hose. Remove securing bracket rear bolt, upper coolant pipe and knock sensor.
  3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Lubricate "O" ring seal on end of coolant pipe with fresh engine coolant. Tighten all assembly retaining bolts and knock sensor to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/acura/slx/i-1995-1999/remont/removal-installation/#engine-controls-removeinstalloverhaul__torque-specifications) .
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove connectors from VCM. Remove mounting hardware. Remove VCM from engine compartment. Remove VCM access cover. Remove calibration PROM by squeezing each end of Blue PROM and pull upward. Inspect alignment notches of KS calibration PROM and set aside DO NOT open KS PROM. NOTE: Replacement VCM is supplied without a KS calibration PROM. KS calibration PROM must be removed from defective VCM. Use of unapproved KS calibration sensor PROM removal methods may cause damage to KS Calibration PROM or socket.
  2. To install, align notches of KS calibration PROM and socket. Gently press on ends of KS calibration PROM until firmly seated and click is heard. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.

FUEL SYSTEM

WARNINGAlways relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel injection-related component. DO NOT allow fuel to contact electrical parts while testing fuel system components.

FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE

  1. Loosen fuel filler cap to relieve tank pressure. Remove fuel pump relay. See «FUEL PUMP RELAY LOCATION»(/acura/slx/i-1995-1999/remont/removal-installation/#engine-controls-removeinstalloverhaul) .
  2. Start engine and allow it to run until it stalls. Loosen hose clamp of fuel line on side of pressure regulator coming from fuel line inlet distributor pipe.
  3. Cover fuel hose using a shop towel. Slowly pull hose from pressure regulator to relieve fuel pressure. When fuel stops leaking, reinstall hose and clamp. FUEL PUMP RELAY LOCATION Model Location Trooper SLX In Right Fenderwell Relay Box
  1. Remove negative battery cable. Remove gas cap. Drain fuel tank by removing fuel tank drain plug. Replace fuel tank drain plug.
  2. Disconnect fuel tank wiring connectors and evaporative hoses. Remove fuel filler hose. Remove fuel pressure and return lines. Remove fuel tank. Remove sending unit screws and fuel pump.
  3. To install, reverse removal procedures. Tighten sending unit screws. Ensure fuel tank drain plug is tightened to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/acura/slx/i-1995-1999/remont/removal-installation/#engine-controls-removeinstalloverhaul__torque-specifications) .

FUEL RAIL & FUEL INJECTORS

CAUTIONTo prevent damage to fuel injectors retaining bracket and/or fuel injectors, DO NOT try to remove fuel injectors by lifting up fuel injector retaining bracket while fuel injectors are still installed in bracket slots. DO NOT attempt to remove bracket without first removing fuel pressure regulator.
WARNINGTo reduce risk of fire, verify lower (small) "O" ring of each injector does not remain in lower manifold. If "O" ring is not removed with injector, replacement injector, with NEW "O" rings, will not seat properly in injector socket and could cause a fuel leak.

Note. Each injector is calibrated for a specific flow rate. When replacing fuel injectors, order replacements with identical part number as old injectors.

Scheme 2

Scheme 2: Removal & Installation
  1. Relieve fuel pressure. See «FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE»(/acura/slx/i-1995-1999/remont/removal-installation/#engine-controls-removeinstalloverhaul__fuel-system-pressure-release).
