1. If the engine is already out of the vehicle, go to step 14 .
2. Raise the vehicle on the lift.
3. Drain the engine oil (see «ENGINE OIL REPLACEMENT»(ref-513834-S16958081852012111600000) ).
4. Remove the front wheels.
5. Remove the front splash shield (see «FRONT SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT»(ref-513861-S35714840182012111600000) ).
6. Remove the power steering pipe bracket and unclamp the power steering pipe clamps on the front subframe (see step 32 under «ENGINE REMOVAL»(ref-513860-S39022094252012111600000) ).
7. Remove the six bolts securing the steering gearbox mounting brackets (see step 33 under «ENGINE REMOVAL»(ref-513860-S39022094252012111600000) ).
8. Remove the two bolts at the under-floor TWC front joint (see «UNDER-FLOOR TWC REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-513862-S09129202082012111600000) ). The illustration shows SH-AWD model.
9. Remove the lower torque rod (see step 45 under «ENGINE REMOVAL»(ref-513860-S39022094252012111600000) ).
10. Attach the subframe adapter (A) to the subframe and hang the belt of the subframe adapter over the front of the subframe, then secure the belt (B) with its stop (C).
11. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, then attach them with bolts securely.
12. Remove the front subframe mounting 12 x 1.25 mm bolts (A) and the lower arm bracket mounting bolts (B), then loosen the front subframe mounting 14 x 1.5 mm bolts (C) on the subframe so they are about 30 mm (1.18 in) from the mounting surface.
13. Remove the subframe adapter.
14. Remove the lower torque rod bracket.
15. Remove the torque converter case cover (A) and the transmission mounting bolts (B).
16. Remove the bolts securing the oil pan.
17. Using a flat blade screwdriver, separate the oil pan from the engine block in the places shown in illustration.
18. Remove the oil pan.

1. Remove the engine/transmission (see «ENGINE REMOVAL»(ref-513860-S39022094252012111600000) ).
2. Remove the transmission (see «TRANSMISSION REMOVAL»(ref-513840-S17210007152012111600000) ).
3. Remove the drive plate (see «DRIVE PLATE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-513840-S11102809692012111600000) ).
4. Remove the oil pan (see «OIL PAN REMOVAL»(ref-513865-S17203510212012111600000) ).
5. Remove the oil pump (see «OIL PUMP REMOVAL»(ref-513834-S29764279032012111600000) ).
6. Remove the cylinder head (see «CYLINDER HEAD REMOVAL»(ref-513849-S13027845342012111600000) ).
7. Remove the baffle plate.
8. Remove the 8 mm bolts in sequence.
9. Remove the bearing cap bolts. To prevent warpage, loosen the bolts in sequence 1/3 turn at a time; repeat the sequence until all bolts are loosened.
10. Using a flat blade screwdriver, separate the lower block from the engine block in the places shown in illustration.
11. Remove the lower block and the bearings. Keep all the bearings in order.
12. Remove the connecting rod caps/bearings. Keep all caps/bearings in order.
13. Lift the crankshaft out of the engine. Being careful not to damage the journals.
14. Remove the upper bearing halves from the connecting rods, and set them aside with their respective caps.
15. If you can feel a ridge of metal or hard carbon around the top of each cylinder, remove it with a ridge reamer (A). Follow the reamer manufacturer's instructions. If the ridge is not removed, it may damage the pistons as they are pushed out.
16. Use the wooden handle of a hammer (A) to drive out the piston/connecting rod assembly (B).
17. Reinstall the lower block and the bearings on the engine block in the proper order.
18. Reinstall the connecting rod bearings and the caps after removing each piston/connecting rod assembly.
19. Mark each piston/connecting rod assembly with its cylinder number to make sure they are reused in the original order. NOTE: The existing number on the connecting rod does not indicate its position in the engine, it indicates the rod bore size.

Crankshaft Installation

1. Check the connecting rod bearing clearance with plastigage (see «CONNECTING ROD BEARING CLEARANCE INSPECTION»(ref-513865-S22329502972012111600000) ).
2. Check the main bearing clearance with plastigage (see «MAIN BEARING CLEARANCE INSPECTION»(ref-513865-S30225163562012111600000) ).
3. Install the bearing halves in the engine block and the connecting rods.
4. Apply new engine oil to the main bearings and the rod bearings.
5. Hold the crankshaft so that rod journal No. 2 and rod journal No. 3 are straight up, and lower the crankshaft into the engine block.
6. Apply new engine oil to the side with the thrust washer groove. Install the thrust washers (A) in the No. 4 journal.
7. Inspect the connecting rod bolts (see «CONNECTING ROD BOLT INSPECTION»(ref-513865-S06903149662012111600000) ).
8. Apply new engine oil to the threads and flange of the connecting rod bolts.
9. Seat the rod journals into connecting rod No. 1 and connecting rod No. 4. Line up the mark (B) on the connecting rod and the cap, then install the caps and the bolts finger-tight.
10. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise, and seat the journals into connecting rod No. 2 and connecting rod No. 3. Line up the mark on the connecting rod and the cap, then install the caps and the bolts finger-tight.
11. Torque the connecting rod bolts to 29 N.m (3.0 kgf.m, 22 lbf.ft).
12. Tighten the connecting rod bolts an additional 90°. NOTE: Remove the connecting rod bolt if you tightened it beyond the specified angle, and go back to step 7 of the procedure. Do not loosen it back to the specified angle.
13. Remove the old liquid gasket from the lower block mating surfaces, bolts, and bolt holes.
14. Clean and dry the lower block mating surfaces.
15. Apply liquid gasket (P/N 08717-0004, 08718-0003, 08718-0004, or 08718-0009) to the engine block mating surface of the lower block and to the inside edge of the threaded bolt holes. Install the component within 5 minutes of applying the liquid gasket. NOTE: Apply a 3 mm (0.12 in) diameter bead of liquid gasket along the broken line (A). If you apply liquid gasket P/N 08718-0012, the component must be installed within 4 minutes. If too much time has passed after applying the liquid gasket, remove the old liquid gasket and residue, then reapply new liquid gasket.
16. Put the lower block on the engine block.
17. Apply new engine oil to the threads and flange of the bearing cap bolts.
18. Torque the bearing cap bolts, in sequence, to 29 N.m (3.0 kgf.m, 22 lbf.ft).
19. Tighten the bearing cap bolts an additional 67°.
20. Torque the 8 mm bolts, in sequence, to 22 N.m (2.2 kgf.m, 16 lbf.ft).
21. Clean the excess liquid gasket off the engine block.
22. Apply a light coat of new engine oil to the lip of the crankshaft oil seal.
23. Use the driver handle, 15 x 135L and the oil seal driver attachment, 96 mm, drive in the new crankshaft oil seal squarely into the engine block to the specified installed height.
24. Measure the distance between the engine block (A) and the crankshaft oil seal (B). Oil Seal Installed Height: 0.2-1.2 mm (0.001-0.047 in)
25. Install the baffle plate.
26. Install the oil pump (see «OIL PUMP INSTALLATION»(ref-513834-S35375641902012111600000) ).
27. Install the oil pan (see «OIL PAN INSTALLATION»(ref-513865-S32061974332012111600000) ).
28. Install the cylinder head (see «CYLINDER HEAD INSTALLATION»(ref-513849-S19158385862012111600000) ).
29. Install the drive plate (see «DRIVE PLATE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-513840-S11102809692012111600000) ).
30. Install the transmission (see «DRIVE PLATE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-513840-S11102809692012111600000) ).
31. Install the engine/transmission assembly (see «ENGINE INSTALLATION»(ref-513860-S37815286552012111600000) ). NOTE: When any crankshaft or connecting rod bearing is replaced, run the engine at idle speed until it reaches normal operating temperature, then continue running it for about 15 minutes.

1. Remove the old liquid gasket from the oil pan mating surfaces, the bolts, and the bolt holes.
2. Clean and dry the oil pan mating surfaces.
3. Apply liquid gasket (P/N 08717-0004, 08718-0003, 08718-0004, or 08718-0009) to the engine block mating surface of the oil pan and to the inside edge of the threaded bolt holes. Install the component within 5 minutes of applying the liquid gasket. NOTE: Apply a 3 mm (0.12 in) diameter bead of liquid gasket along the broken line (A). If you apply liquid gasket P/N 08718-0012, the component must be installed within 4 minutes. If too much time has passed after applying the liquid gasket, remove the old liquid gasket and residue, then reapply new liquid gasket.
4. Install the oil pan.
5. Tighten the bolts in three steps. In the final step, torque the bolts, in sequence, to 12 N.m (1.2 kgf.m, 9 lbf.ft). Wipe off the excess liquid gasket on the each side of crankshaft pulley and drive plate. NOTE: Wait at least 30 minutes before filling the engine with oil. Do not run the engine for at least 3 hours after installing the oil pan.
6. Install the transmission mounting bolts (A) and the torque converter case cover (B).
7. Install the lower torque rod bracket.
8. If the engine is still in the vehicle, do the following steps.
9. Tighten the front subframe mounting 14 x 1.5 mm bolts (A), the new front subframe mounting 12 x 1.25 mm bolts (B), and the lower arm bracket mounting bolts (C).
10. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
11. Loosen the upper torque rod mounting bolt (see step 1 under «LOWER TORQUE ROD REPLACEMENT»(ref-513860-S34611768482012111600000) ).
12. Raise the vehicle on the lift.
13. Tighten the lower torque rod mounting bolts (see step 18 under «ENGINE INSTALLATION»(ref-513860-S37815286552012111600000) ).
14. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
15. Tighten the upper torque rod mounting bolt (see step 6 under «LOWER TORQUE ROD REPLACEMENT»(ref-513860-S34611768482012111600000) ).
16. Raise the vehicle on the lift.
17. Using the new gasket (A), tighten the two bolts at the under-floor TWC front joint (see «UNDER-FLOOR TWC REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-513862-S09129202082012111600000) ).
18. Install the six bolts securing the steering gearbox mounting brackets (see step 24 under «ENGINE INSTALLATION»(ref-513860-S37815286552012111600000) ).
19. Install the power steering pipe bracket and secure the pipe with the pipe clamps (see step 25 under «ENGINE INSTALLATION»(ref-513860-S37815286552012111600000) ).
20. Install the front splash shield (see «FRONT SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT»(ref-513861-S35714840182012111600000) ).
21. Install the front wheels.
22. Refill the engine with engine oil (see «ENGINE OIL REPLACEMENT»(ref-513834-S16958081852012111600000) ).

Transmission End Crankshaft Oil Seal Installation - In Car

1. Remove the transmission (see «TRANSMISSION REMOVAL»(ref-513840-S17210007152012111600000) ).
2. Remove the drive plate (see «DRIVE PLATE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-513840-S11102809692012111600000) ).
3. Clean and dry the crankshaft oil seal housing.
4. Apply a light coat of new engine oil to the lip of the crankshaft oil seal.
5. Using the driver handle, 15 x 135L and the oil seal driver attachment, 96 mm, drive in the new crankshaft oil seal until the oil seal driver attachment bottoms on the engine block end cover. Align the hole in the oil seal driver attachment with the pin on the crankshaft.
6. Measure the distance between the engine block (A) and the crankshaft oil seal (B). Oil Seal Installed Height: 0.2-1.2 mm (0.001-0.047 in)
7. Install the drive plate (see «DRIVE PLATE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-513840-S11102809692012111600000) ).
8. Install the transmission (see «DRIVE PLATE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-513840-S11102809692012111600000) ).

Sealing Bolt Installation

Note. When installing the sealing bolts (A, B) and the drain plug bolt (C), always use a new washer (except for the bolt (D).
