Brake System Inspection and Test
Inspect the brake system components listed. Repair or replace any parts that are leaking or damaged.

BRAKE SYSTEM COMPONENTS CHART
Brake pedal sinks/fades when braking
- Set the parking brake, and start the engine, then turn off the A/C switch. Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature (radiator fan comes on twice).
- Attach a 50 mm (2 in.) piece of masking tape along the bottom of the steering wheel, and draw a horizontal reference mark across it.
- With the transmission in the P or N position, press and hold the brake pedal lightly (about the same pressure needed to keep an A/T-equipped vehicle from creeping), then release the parking brake.
- While still holding the brake pedal, hook the end of the tape measure behind the brake pedal, then pull the tape up to the steering wheel. Note the measurement between the brake pedal and the reference mark on the steering wheel.
- Apply steady pressure to the brake pedal for 3 minutes.
- Watch the tape measure. If the measurement increases 10 mm (3/8 in.) or less, the master cylinder is OK. If the measurement increases more than 10 mm (3/8 in.), replace the master cylinder. NOTE: When the electric vacuum pump motor operates, the brake pedal pressing force will be changed. In this case, the master cylinder is not faulty.
Rapid brake pad wear, vehicle vibration (after a long drive), or high, hard brake pedal
Note. Make sure that the caliper pins are installed correctly.
Upper caliper pin B and lower caliper pin A are different. If the pins are installed in the wrong location, it will cause, vibration, uneven or rapid brake pad wear, and possibly uneven tire wear. For proper caliper pin location (see FRONT BRAKE CALIPER OVERHAUL ).
- Check the electric vacuum pump system (see «GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#electric-vacuum-pump-system) ). Make sure the system indicator does not stay on.
- Drive the vehicle until the brakes drag or until the pedal is high and hard. This can take 20 or more brake pedal applications during an extended test-drive.
- With the engine running, raise the vehicle on a lift, and spin all four wheels by hand. Is there brake drag at any of the wheels? YES -Go to step 4. NO -Look for other causes of the pad wear, high pedal, or vehicle vibration.
- Turn the engine off, pump the brake pedal to deplete the vacuum in the brake booster, then spin the wheels again to check for brake drag. Is there brake drag at any of the wheels? YES -Go to step 5. NO -Replace the brake booster (see «BRAKE BOOSTER REPLACEMENT»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components) ).
- Without removing the brake lines, unbolt and separate the master cylinder from the booster, then spin the wheels to check for brake drag. Is there brake drag at any of the wheels? YES -Go to step 6. NO -Check the brake pedal position switch adjustment and pedal free play (see «BRAKE PEDAL AND BRAKE PEDAL POSITION SWITCH ADJUSTMENT»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components) ).
- Loosen the hydraulic lines at the master cylinder, then spin the wheels to check for brake drag. Is there brake drag at any of the wheels? YES -Go to step 7. NO -Replace the «MASTER CYLINDER»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components__master-cylinder-replacement) .
- Loosen the bleed screws at each caliper, then spin the wheels to check for brake drag. Is there brake drag at any of the wheels? YES -Disassemble and repair the caliper on the wheel(s) with brake drag. NO -Look for and replace any damaged brake lines. If all brake lines are OK, replace the VSA modulator-control unit (see «VSA MODULATOR-CONTROL UNIT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/anti-locktraction-control/#vsa-vehicle-stability-assist-system__vsa-modulator-control-unit-removal-and-installation) ).

- Turn the brake pedal position switch (A) counterclockwise, and pull it back until it is no longer touching the brake pedal.
- Pull back the carpet, and find the cutout (B) in the insulator. Lift up the insulator cutout, and measure the pedal height (C) at the center of the pedal pad (D) to the floor without the insulator. Standard pedal height (with carpet removed): 165 mm (61/2 in.)
- Loosen the pushrod locknut (A), and screw the pushrod (B) in or out with pliers until the standard pedal height from the floor is reached. After adjustment, tighten the locknut firmly. Do not adjust the pedal height with the pushrod pressed. Brake Pedal Position Switch Clearance
- Lift up on the brake pedal by hand. Push in the brake pedal position switch until its plunger is fully pressed (threaded end (A) touching the pad (B) on the pedal arm). Then, turn the switch 45° clockwise to lock it. The gap between the brake pedal position switch and the pad is automatically adjusted to 0.7 mm (0.028 in.) by locking the switch. Make sure the brake lights go off when the pedal is released.
- Check the brake pedal free play.

- With the engine off, inspect the pedal free play (A) on the pedal pad (B) by pushing the pedal by hand. If the brake pedal free play is out of specification, adjust the brake pedal position switch (C). If the brake pedal free play is insufficient, it may result in brake drag. Free play: 1-5 mm (1/16-3/16 in.)

- Press the parking brake pedal (A) with 294 N (30 kgf, 66 lbf) of force to fully apply the parking brake. The parking brake pedal should be locked within the specified number of clicks. Pedal locked clicks: 6 to 7
- Adjust the parking brake if the pedal clicks are not within the specification.
Note. Minor parking brake pedal adjustments (1 to 2 clicks) can be made with the adjusting nut. If a larger adjustment is required, follow the major adjustment procedure using the adjuster at the parking brake drum.
After installing new parking brake shoes and/or new brake disc/drum, do the shoe lining break-in procedure (see PARKING BRAKE SHOE LINING BREAK-IN ).

- Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations (see «SAFETY STANDS»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/paintcoatings/#general-information__safety-stands) ).
- Release the parking brake pedal fully.
- Press the parking brake pedal 1 click.
- Tighten the parking brake adjusting nut (A) until the parking brakes drag slightly when the rear wheels are rotated.
- Release the parking brake pedal fully, and check that the parking brakes do not drag when the rear wheels are rotated. Readjust if necessary.
- Make sure the parking brakes are fully applied when the parking brake pedal is pressed all the way.

- Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations (see «SAFETY STANDS»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/paintcoatings/#general-information__safety-stands) ).
- Release the parking brake pedal fully.
- Back off the parking brake adjusting nut (A) on the parking brake pedal.
- Remove the rear wheels.
- Remove the access plug (A).
- Turn the ratchet teeth on the adjuster nut (B) with a flat-tip screwdriver (C) until the shoes lock against the parking brake drum. Then back off the adjuster 8 clicks, and install the access plug.
- Clean the mating surface of the brake disc/drum and the inside of the wheel, then install the rear wheels.
- Do the minor adjustment procedure.
Brake System Bleeding
Note. Do not reuse the drained fluid. Use only clean Acura DOT 3 Brake Fluid from an unopened container. Using a non-Acura brake fluid can cause corrosion and shorten the life of the system. Do not mix different brands of brake fluid; they may not be compatible. Make sure no dirt or other foreign matter is allowed to contaminate the brake fluid. Do not spill brake fluid on the vehicle; it may damage the paint. If brake fluid does contact the paint, wash it off immediately with water. The reservoir connected to the master cylinder must be at the MAX (upper) level mark at the start of the bleeding procedure and checked after bleeding each brake line. Add fluid as required.

- Make sure the brake fluid level in the reservoir (A) is at the MAX (upper) level line (B).
- Have someone slowly pump the brake pedal several times, then apply steady pressure.
- Start the bleeding at the left front wheel. NOTE: Bleed the calipers or the wheel cylinders in the sequence shown.
- Attach a length of clear drain tube (A) to the bleed screw (B). With the brake pedal pressed, loosen the bleed screw to allow air to escape from the system, then tighten the bleed screw securely. NOTE: Do not loosen the special bolt (C) on the rear caliper. Front Rear
- Refill the master cylinder reservoir to the MAX (upper) level line.
- Repeat the procedure at each wheel until no air bubbles are in the fluid.

Parking Brake Switch Test
Note. If both the ABS/VSA indicator and the brake system indicator come on at the same time, check the VSA system first (see GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION ).

- Disconnect the parking brake switch connector (A) from the parking brake switch (B).
- Check for continuity between the positive terminal (C) and body ground. With the parking brake pedal pressed, there should be continuity. With the parking brake pedal released, there should be no continuity. NOTE: If the parking brake switch and fluid level switch are OK, but the brake system indicator does not function, check the VSA system (see «GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/anti-locktraction-control/#vsa-vehicle-stability-assist-system) ).
Brake Fluid Level Switch Test
Check for continuity between the terminals (1) and (2) with the float in the down position and in the up position.
Note. Remove the brake fluid completely from the reservoir. With the float down, there should be continuity. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid to the MAX (upper) level (A). With the float up, there should be no continuity. If both the ABS/VSA indicator and the brake system indicator come on at the same time, check the VSA system first (see GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION ). If the parking brake switch and fluid level switch are OK, but brake system indicator does not function, check the VSA system (see GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION ).

Front Brake Pad Inspection and Replacement

- Raise the front of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations (see «SAFETY STANDS»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/paintcoatings/#general-information__safety-stands) ).
- Remove the front wheels.
- Check the thickness (A) of the inner pad (B) and outer pad (C). Do not include the thickness of the backing plate.
- If the brake pad thickness is less than the service limit, replace the front brake pads as a set.
- Clean the mating surface of the brake disc and the inside of the wheel, then install the front wheels.

- Remove some brake fluid from the master cylinder.
- Raise the front of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations (see «SAFETY STANDS»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/paintcoatings/#general-information__safety-stands) ).
- Remove the front wheels.
- Remove the flange bolt (A) while holding the caliper pin (B) with a wrench. Be careful not to damage the pin boot, and pivot the caliper (C) up out of the way. Check the hose and pin boots for damage and deterioration.
- Remove the pad shims (A) and brake pads (B).
- Remove the pad retainers (A).
- Clean the caliper bracket (B) thoroughly; remove any rust, and check for grooves and cracks.
- Check the brake disc for damage and cracks.
- Apply a thin coat of M-77 assembly paste (P/N 08798-9010) to the retainers on their mating surfaces (indicated by the arrows) against the caliper bracket.
- Install the pad retainers. Wipe excess assembly paste off the retainers. Keep any assembly paste off the brake discs and brake pads.
- Mount the brake caliper piston compressor (A) on the caliper body (B).
- Press the piston into the caliper body far enough to allow clearance for the brake pads. Make sure the piston boot is in position to prevent damaging it when pivoting the caliper down. NOTE: Be careful when pressing in the piston; brake fluid might overflow from the master cylinder's reservoir.
- Remove the brake caliper piston compressor.
- Apply a thin coat of M-77 assembly paste (P/N 08798-9010) to the pad side of the shims (A), the back of the brake pads (B) and the other areas indicated by the arrows. Wipe excess assembly paste off the pad shims and brake pads. Contaminated brake discs or brake pads reduce stopping ability. Keep grease and assembly paste off the brake discs and brake pads.
- Install the brake pads and pad shims correctly. Install the brake pad with the wear indicator (C) on the upper inside. If you are reusing the brake pads, always reinstall the brake pads in their original positions to prevent a momentary loss of braking efficiency.
- Pivot the caliper down into position. Install the flange bolt (A), and tighten it to the specified torque while holding the caliper pin (B) with a wrench. Be careful not to damage the pin boot.
- Clean the mating surface of the brake disc and the inside of the wheel, then install the front wheels.
- Press the brake pedal several times to make sure the brakes work. NOTE: Engagement may require a greater pedal stroke immediately after the brake pads have been replaced as a set. Several applications of the brake pedal will restore the normal pedal stroke.
- Add brake fluid as needed.
- After installation, check for leaks at hose and line joints or connections, and retighten if necessary. Test-drive the vehicle, then check for leaks (see «BRAKE HOSE AND LINE INSPECTION»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components__brake-hose-and-line-inspection) ).

- Raise the front of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations (see «SAFETY STANDS»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/paintcoatings/#general-information__safety-stands) ).
- Remove the front wheels.
- Remove the brake pads (see «FRONT BRAKE PAD INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components__front-brake-pad-inspection-and-replacement) ).
- Inspect the brake disc surface for damage and cracks. Clean the brake disc thoroughly, and remove all rust.
- Install suitable flat washers (A) and wheel nuts (B), and tighten the wheel nuts to the specified torque to hold the brake disc securely against the hub.
- Set up the dial gauge against the brake disc as shown, and measure the runout at 10 mm (3/8 in.) from the outer edge of the brake disc. Brake disc runout: Service limit: 0.04 mm (0.0016 in.)
- If the brake disc is beyond the service limit, refinish the brake disc with a commercially available on-car brake lathe. Max. refinishing limit: 26.0 mm (1.02 in.) NOTE: If the brake disc is beyond the service limit for refinishing, replace it (see «FRONT BRAKE DISC REPLACEMENT»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components) ). A new brake disc should be refinished if its runout is greater than 0.04 mm (0.0016 in.).

- Raise the front of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations (see «SAFETY STANDS»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/paintcoatings/#general-information__safety-stands) ).
- Remove the front wheels.
- Remove the brake pads (see «FRONT BRAKE PAD INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components__front-brake-pad-inspection-and-replacement) ).
- Using a micrometer, measure the brake disc thickness at eight points, about 45° apart and 10 mm (3/8 in.) in from the outer edge of the brake disc. Replace the brake disc if the smallest measurement is less than the max. refinishing limit. Brake disc thickness: Standard: 27.8-28.1 mm (1.09-1.11 in.) Max. refinishing limit: 26.0 mm (1.02 in.) Brake disc parallelism: 0.015 mm (0.0006 in.) max. NOTE: This is the maximum allowable difference between the thickness measurements.
- If the brake disc is beyond the service limit for parallelism, refinish the brake disc with a commercially available on-car brake lathe.
Note. If the brake disc is beyond the service limit for refinishing, replace it (see FRONT BRAKE DISC REPLACEMENT ).

- Raise the front of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations (see «SAFETY STANDS»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/paintcoatings/#general-information__safety-stands) ).
- Remove the front wheels.
- Remove the brake hose mounting bolt (A).
- Remove the brake caliper bracket mounting bolts (B), and remove the caliper assembly (C) from the knuckle. To prevent damage to the caliper assembly or brake hose, use a short piece of wire to hang the caliper assembly from the undercarriage. Do not twist the brake hose excessively.
- Remove the 6 mm brake disc flat screws (A).
- Remove the brake disc (B) from the hub. NOTE: If the brake disc has clung to the hub, thread two 8 x 1.25 mm bolts (C) into the brake disc to push it away from the hub. Turn each bolt 90 degrees at a time to prevent the brake disc from binding.
- Install the brake disc in the reverse order of removal, and note these items: Before installing the brake disc, clean the mating surface of the front hub and the inside of the brake disc. Before installing the wheel, clean the mating surface of the brake disc and the inside of the wheel.
Front Brake Caliper Overhaul

Remove, disassemble, inspect, reassemble, and install the caliper, and note these items
Note. Make sure that the caliper pins are installed correctly. Upper caliper pin B and lower caliper pin A are different. If the these caliper pins are installed in the wrong location, it will cause vibration, uneven or rapid pad wear, and possibly uneven tire wear.
- Do not spill brake fluid on the vehicle; it may damage the paint; if brake fluid gets on the paint, wash it off immediately with water.
- To prevent dripping brake fluid, cover disconnected hose joints with rags or shop towels.
- Clean all parts in brake fluid and air dry; blow out all passages with compressed air.
- Before reassembling, check that all parts are free of dirt and other foreign particles.
- Replace parts with new ones as specified in the illustration.
- Make sure no dirt or other foreign matter gets in the brake fluid.
- Make sure no grease or oil gets on the brake discs or pads.
- When reusing brake pads, always reinstall them in their original positions to prevent loss of braking efficiency.
- Do not reuse drained brake fluid. Use only clean Acura DOT 3 Brake Fluid from an unopened container. Using a non-Acura brake fluid can cause corrosion and shorten the life of the system.
- Do not mix different brands of brake fluid as they may not be compatible.
- Coat the pistons, piston seal grooves, and caliper bores with clean brake fluid.
- Replace all rubber parts with new ones whenever disassembled.
- After installing the caliper, check the brake hose and line for leaks, interference, and twisting.

Master Cylinder Replacement
Note. Do not spill brake fluid on the vehicle; it may damage the paint; if brake fluid gets on the paint, wash it off immediately with water. Be careful not to damage or deform the brake lines during removal and inspection. To prevent the brake fluid from flowing, plug and cover the hose ends and joints with a shop towel or equivalent.

- Remove the air cleaner housing cover (see «AIR CLEANER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical/#intake-air-system) ).
- Release the hooks (A), and move the under-hood fuse/relay box (B) aside. Do not disconnect the fuse/relay box connectors.
- Remove the reservoir cap, then remove the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir with a syringe.
- Disconnect the brake fluid level switch connector (A).
- Remove the reservoir mounting bolt (B).
- Remove the reservoir stay (A) and the under-hood fuse/relay box stay (B).
- Disconnect the brake lines (A) from the master cylinder (B). To prevent spills, cover the line joints with rags or shop towels.
- Remove the master cylinder mounting nuts (C).
- Remove the brake booster pressure sensor (D) with the stay, and move it aside. Do not damage the sensor and the wire harness.
- Remove the master cylinder from the brake booster (E). Be careful not to bend or damage the brake lines when removing the master cylinder.
- Remove the O-ring (F) from the master cylinder. NOTE: Replace the O-ring whenever the master cylinder is removed.
- Install the under-hood fuse/relay box.
- Install the master cylinder in the reverse order of removal, and note these items: Check the brake booster pushrod clearance (see «BRAKE BOOSTER PUSHROD CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components__brake-booster-pushrod-clearance-adjustment) ). Coat the new O-ring with silicone oil (Shin-Etsu KF54). Check the brake pedal height and free play after installing the master cylinder, and adjust it if necessary (see «BRAKE PEDAL AND BRAKE PEDAL POSITION SWITCH ADJUSTMENT»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components) ).
- Bleed the brake system (see «BRAKE SYSTEM BLEEDING»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components__brake-system-bleeding) ).
- Spin the wheels to check for brake drag.
Scheme 35
- Inspect and note these items: Before reassembling, check that all parts are free of dirt and other foreign particles. Do not try to disassemble the master cylinder assembly. Replace the master cylinder assembly with a new part if necessary. Do not allow dirt or foreign matter to contaminate the brake fluid.
- If the reservoir hose was disconnected, install the reservoir (A) and the reservoir hose (B) to the subreservoir (C).
Note. Align the rib plates (D) on the reservoir and subreservoir with the paint marks (E) on the hose. Position the clamp (F) as shown.

Brake Booster Test
Note. The brake boost system is assisted by an electric vacuum pump. If the electric vacuum pump system indicator stays on, check the electric vacuum pump system (see GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION ) before you test the brake booster. If the indicator comes on when testing the brake booster, there is no problem. Just check for and clear any DTCs with the HDS (see HOW TO CLEAR DTCS ).
Functional Test
- With the engine off, press the brake pedal several times to deplete the vacuum reservoir, then press the brake pedal hard, and hold it for 15 seconds. If the brake pedal sinks, either the master cylinder is leaking internally, or the brake system is leaking. Inspect the brake hoses and lines (see «BRAKE HOSE AND LINE INSPECTION»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components__brake-hose-and-line-inspection) ).
- Start the engine with the brake pedal pressed. If the brake pedal sinks slightly, the vacuum booster is operating normally. If the brake pedal height does not vary, do the leak test.
- Do the brake system test (see «BRAKE SYSTEM INSPECTION AND TEST»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components__brake-system-inspection-and-test) ).
Scheme 37
- Press the brake pedal with the engine running, then stop the engine. The brake pedal height should not vary while pressed for 30 seconds. If the pedal height rises, go to step 6 . If it does not rise, go to step 2.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds. Turn the ignition switch off, and wait 30 seconds. Press the brake pedal several times using normal pressure. When the pedal is first pressed, it should be low. On consecutive applications, the pedal height should gradually rise. Does the pedal rise on each consecutive application? If it rises, the booster is OK. If it does not, go to step 3.
- Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose (A) from the 3-way joint (B). A check valve (intake manifold) (C) is built into the hose.
- Start the engine, and let it idle. Check for vacuum on the brake booster vacuum hose with your finger. If no vacuum is available, the check valve (intake manifold) is not working properly. Replace the brake booster vacuum hose and check valve (intake manifold), and retest. If vacuum is found, go to step 5.
- With the engine off, reconnect the vacuum hose to the 3-way joint.
- Start the engine, and then pinch the brake booster vacuum hose between the 3-way joint and the booster.
- Turn the ignition switch off, and wait 30 seconds. Press the brake pedal several times using normal pressure. When the pedal is first pressed, it should be low. On consecutive applications, the pedal height should gradually rise. If the pedal position does not vary go to step 8. If the pedal position varies, replace the brake booster vacuum hose/check valve (intake manifold) assembly.
- Start the engine, and pinch off the booster vacuum hose between the 3-way joint and the electric vacuum pump.
- Turn the ignition switch off, and wait 30 seconds. Press the brake pedal several times using normal pressure. When the pedal is first pressed, it should be low. On consecutive applications, the pedal height should gradually rise. If the pedal position does not rise, inspect the seal between the master cylinder and booster. If the seal is OK, replace the brake booster. If the pedal position varies, inspect the vacuum hose between the 3-way joint and the electric vacuum pump check valve. If the hose is OK, replace the vacuum hose/check valve (vacuum pump).
Brake Booster Pushrod Clearance Adjustment

Note. Brake booster pushrod to piston clearance must be checked and readjusted before installing a new master cylinder. The master cylinder assembly comes with a tool that must be used to adjust the clearance between the brake booster pushrod and the master cylinder piston. Use only the tool that comes with the new master cylinder to check the pushrod clearance. Do not use any other tool. Make sure to discard the tool supplied with the master cylinder after its use. The brake booster must be installed on the vehicle before doing the pushrod clearance adjustment. If the booster is removed, check the pushrod length (A) as shown. If the length is incorrect, loosen the pushrod locknut (B), and turn the yoke (C) in or out to adjust, then install the master cylinder.

- Measure the clearance between the plate (A) supplied with the master cylinder and brake booster pushrod (B). Make sure that the tool is lying flat against the surface (C) of the brake booster, and that the tip of the tool contacts the pushrod. If the tool will not lie flat (D) or there is a gap (E) between the tool and the pushrod, go to step 2 to adjust the pushrod in or out.
- If the clearance is incorrect, use the booster piston holder to hold the pushrod (A), and turn the adjusting screw (B) clockwise to increase clearance or counterclockwise to decrease clearance.
- Install the «MASTER CYLINDER»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components__master-cylinder-replacement) .

- Remove the lock pin (A) and the joint pin (B), then disconnect the yoke from the brake pedal.
- Remove the brake booster mounting nuts (C).
- Pull the brake booster (A) forward, then move the brake booster to the front side while turning it.
- Remove the brake booster upward from the engine compartment. NOTE: Be careful not to damage the booster surfaces and threads of the booster stud bolts. Be careful not to bend or damage the brake lines.
- Install the brake booster in the reverse order of removal, and note these items: Adjust the pushrod length before installing the brake booster (see «BRAKE BOOSTER PUSHROD CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components__brake-booster-pushrod-clearance-adjustment) ). Always use a new lock pin. Install the master cylinder after installing the brake booster (see «MASTER CYLINDER»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components__master-cylinder-replacement) ). - Remove the rear wheels.
- Remove the flange bolt (A) while holding the caliper pin (B) with a wrench. Be careful not to damage the pin boot, and pivot the caliper (C) up out of the way. Check the hose and pin boots for damage and deterioration.
- Remove the pad shims (A) and brake pads (B).
- Remove the pad retainers (A). NOTE: The upper and lower pad retainers are different. During installation, make sure the pad retainers are in proper positions.
- Clean the caliper bracket (B) thoroughly; remove any rust, and check for grooves and cracks.
- Check the brake disc/drum for damage and cracks.
- Apply a thin coat of M-77 assembly paste (P/N 08798-9010) to the retainers on their mating surfaces (indicated by the arrows) against the caliper bracket.
- Install the pad retainers. Wipe excess assembly paste off the retainers. Keep any assembly paste off the brake discs and brake pads.
- Mount the brake caliper piston compressor (A) on the caliper body (B).
- Press the piston into the caliper body far enough to allow clearance for the brake pads. Make sure the piston boot is in position to prevent damaging it when pivoting the caliper down. NOTE: Be careful when pressing in the piston; brake fluid might overflow from the master cylinder's reservoir.
- Remove the brake caliper piston compressor.
- Apply a thin coat of M-77 assembly paste (P/N 08798-9010) to the pad side of the shims (A), the back of the brake pads (B), and the other areas indicated by the arrows. Wipe excess assembly paste off the pad shims and brake pads. Contaminated brake discs or brake pads reduce stopping ability. Keep grease and assembly paste off the brake discs and brake pads.
- Install the brake pads and pad shims correctly. Install the brake pad with the wear indicator (C) on the bottom inside. If you are reusing the brake pads, always reinstall the brake pads in their original positions to prevent a momentary loss of braking efficiency.
- Pivot the caliper down into position. Install the flange bolt (A), and tighten it to the specified torque while holding the caliper pin (B) with a wrench. Be careful not to damage the pin boots.
- Clean the mating surface of the brake disc/drum and the inside of the wheel, then install the rear wheels.
- Press the brake pedal several times to make sure the brakes work. NOTE: Engagement may require a greater pedal stroke immediately after the brake pads have been replaced as a set. Several applications of the brake pedal will restore the normal pedal stroke.
- Add brake fluid as needed.
- After installation, check for leaks at hose and line joints or connections, and retighten if necessary. Test-drive the vehicle, then check for leaks (see «BRAKE HOSE AND LINE INSPECTION»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components__brake-hose-and-line-inspection) ).

- Remove the rear wheels.

- Set up the dial gauge against the brake disc/drum as shown, and measure the runout at 10 mm (3/8 in.) from the outer edge of the brake disc/drum. Brake disc/drum runout: Service limit: 0.04 mm (0.0016 in.)
- If the brake disc/drum is beyond the service limit, refinish the brake disc/drum with a commercially available on-car brake lathe. Max. refinishing limit: 7.5 mm (0.30 in.) NOTE: If the brake disc/drum is beyond the service limit for refinishing, replace it (see «REAR BRAKE DISC REPLACEMENT»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components) ). A new brake disc/drum should be refinished if its runout is greater than 0.04 mm (0.0016 in.).

Max. refinishing limit: 7.5 mm (0.30 in.) Brake disc/drum parallelism: 0.015 mm (0.0006 in.) max. NOTE: This is the maximum allowable difference between the thickness measurements.
- If the brake disc/drum is beyond the service limit for parallelism, refinish the brake disc/drum with a commercially available on-car brake lathe.
Note. If the brake disc/drum is beyond the service limit for refinishing, replace it (see REAR BRAKE DISC REPLACEMENT ).

- Remove the rear wheel.
- Remove flange nuts (A), then remove the brake hose mounting bracket.
- Remove the caliper mounting bolts (B), and hang the caliper assembly (C) to one side. To prevent damage to the caliper assembly or brake hose, use a short piece of wire to hang the caliper from the undercarriage.
- Remove the two washers (A).
- Release the parking brake, and remove the brake disc/drum (A) from the hub bearing unit. NOTE: If the brake disc/drum cannot be removed, remove the access plug (B), then turn the adjuster bolt (C) with a flat-tip screwdriver until the parking brake shoes become loose. If the brake disc/drum has clung to the hub bearing unit, screw two 8 x 1.25 mm bolts (D) into the brake disc/drum to push it away from the hub bearing unit. Turn each bolt 90 degrees at a time to prevent cocking the brake disc/drum. After installation, if you loosened the parking brake shoes, do the parking brake minor adjustment (see «PARKING BRAKE INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components) ).
- Install the brake disc/drum in the reverse order of removal. Before installing the wheel, clean the mating surface of the brake disc/drum and the inside of the wheel.
- Inspect brake disc runout (see «REAR BRAKE DISC INSPECTION»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components) ).
- Clean the mating surface of the brake disc and the inside of the wheel, then install the wheels.
Rear Brake Caliper Overhaul

Remove, disassemble, inspect, reassemble, and install the caliper, and note these items
- Do not spill brake fluid on the vehicle; it may damage the paint; if brake fluid gets on the paint, wash it off immediately with water.
- To prevent dripping brake fluid, cover disconnected hose joints with rags or shop towels.
- Clean all parts in brake fluid and air dry; blow out all passages with compressed air.
- Before reassembling, check that all parts are free of dirt and other foreign particles.
- Replace parts with new ones as specified in the illustration.
- Make sure no dirt or other foreign matter gets in the brake fluid.
- Make sure no grease or oil gets on the brake discs or pads.
- When reusing brake pads, always reinstall them in their original positions to prevent loss of braking efficiency.
- Do not reuse drained brake fluid. Use only clean Acura DOT 3 Brake Fluid from an unopened container. Using a non-Acura brake fluid can cause corrosion and shorten the life of the system.
- Do not mix different brands of brake fluid as they may not be compatible.
- Coat the pistons, piston seal grooves, and caliper bores with clean brake fluid.
- Replace all rubber parts with new ones whenever disassembled.
- After installing the caliper, check the brake hose and line for leaks, interference, and twisting.

- Apply Molykote 44MA grease to the sliding surface of the pivot pin (A), and insert the pin into the rear brake shoe (B) from the outside.
- Install the parking brake lever (C) and wave washer (D) on the pivot pin, and secure with a new U-clip (E). Install the wave washer with its convex side facing out. Pinch the U-clip securely to prevent the parking brake lever from coming out of the brake shoe.
- Position the parking brake shoes (A), then hook the rod spring (B) on the strut (C) first with the spring end (D) pointing downward. Then hook the rod spring to the parking brake shoe, and install the strut on the parking brake shoes.
- Apply a thin coat of Molykote 44MA grease to the brake shoe ends and strut ends (A), the sliding surfaces of the parking brake shoe (B), and the pivot of the parking brake lever (C) as shown. Wipe off any excess. Keep grease off the brake linings.
- Connect the parking brake cable (A) to the parking brake lever (B). Apply silicone grease to the cable contact surface (C) on the backing plate.
- Install the tension pins (C) and retainer springs (D). Make sure the tension pin does not contact the parking brake lever.
- Install connecting rods A and B on the adjuster nut (E). NOTE: Clean the threaded portions of connecting rod A and the sliding surface of connecting rod B, then coat them with rubber grease. Shorten connecting rod A by fully turning the adjuster nut.
- Position the brake shoe adjuster assembly (F) on the parking brake shoes.
- Install the lower return spring (A).
- Install the upper return spring (B) and brake spring A.
- Install the rear brake disc/drum and rear brake caliper (see «REAR BRAKE DISC REPLACEMENT»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components) ).
- Do the major parking brake adjustment (see «PARKING BRAKE INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components) ).
Parking Brake Shoe Lining Break-in

Note. Do brake lining surface break-in when replacing shoes with new brake linings and/or new rear brake disc/drum. Check the number of parking brake lever clicks. Adjust the parking brake before lining surface break-in (see PARKING BRAKE INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT ).
- Park the vehicle on a firm, level surface.
- Release the parking brake pedal.
- Press the parking brake pedal 4 clicks.
- Drive the vehicle for 1/4 mile (400 m) at about 31 mph (50 km/h).
- Stop the vehicle, and release the parking brake for 5-10 minutes to allow the brake disc/drum to cool.
- Repeat steps 3 through 5 again.

- Do the following checks: Check the brake hose and line joint for leaks, and tighten if necessary. Check the brake hoses for interference and twisting.
- Clean the mating surface of the brake disc/drum and the inside of the wheel, then install the rear wheel.

Note. The parking brake cable must not be bent or distorted. This will lead to stiff operation and premature cable failure. Refer to the Exploded View as needed during this procedure.
Scheme 86
- Loosen the parking brake cable adjusting nut (see «PARKING BRAKE INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components) ).
- Remove the parking brake shoes, and disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever (see «PARKING BRAKE SHOE REPLACEMENT»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components__parking-brake-shoe-replacement) ).
- Remove the parking brake cable mounting bolts from the backing plate (A).
- Pull the parking brake cable (B) and remove it from the backing plate.
- Reinstall the parking brake cable in the reverse order of removal, and note these items: Be careful not to bend or distort the cable. Connect the parking brake cable to the brake lever, and install the brake shoes and disc/drums (see «PARKING BRAKE SHOE REPLACEMENT»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components__parking-brake-shoe-replacement) ). Do the parking brake adjustment (see «PARKING BRAKE INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT»(/acura/rdx/i-2006-2009/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#conventional-brake-components) ). Apply the parking brake firmly 10 times then adjust it again.
