ATF Filter Replacement

Note. The ATF filter is not a scheduled maintenance item. Replace the filter only if it is leaking/or contaminated, or when the transmission is being overhauled or replaced with a remanufactured unit.

  1. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.
  2. Remove the front undercover (see «FRONT UNDERCOVER REPLACEMENT»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/exterior-body-panels/#fenderwell__front-undercover-replacement) ) and the splash shield (see «SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/exterior-body-panels/#fenderwell__splash-shield-replacement) ).
  3. Remove the drain plug (A), and drain the transmission fluid (ATF).
  4. Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer (B).
  5. Remove the harness cover (A) from the ATF filter holder (B).
  6. Disconnect the ATF cooler hoses (A) from the ATF filter (B).
  7. Remove the ATF filter holder (C), and remove the ATF filter.
  8. install a new ATF filter, and secure it with its ATF filter holder and bolt.
  9. Connect the ATF cooler hose (see «ATF COOLER HOSE REPLACEMENT»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission) ).
  10. Install the harness cover to the ATF filter holder.
  11. Install the splash shield (see «SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/exterior-body-panels/#fenderwell__splash-shield-replacement) ) and the front undercover (see «FRONT UNDERCOVER REPLACEMENT»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/exterior-body-panels/#fenderwell__front-undercover-replacement) ).
  12. Refill the transmission with ATF (see step 8 under «ATF Replacement»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission__atf-replacement) ).

  1. Remove the passenger's center console trim (see step 5 under «CENTER CONSOLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#consoles__center-console-removalinstallation)
  2. Remove the beverage holder inner case (see step 11 under «CENTER CONSOLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#consoles__center-console-removalinstallation)
  3. Move the shift lever to R.
  4. Remove the nut (A) securing the shift cable end (B).
  5. Press the holder lock release (A), and pull out the socket holder (B) to remove the shift cable (C) from the shift lever bracket base (D). Do not remove the shift cable by pulling the shift cable guide (E) and the damper (F).
  6. Remove the center console (see «CENTER CONSOLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#consoles__center-console-removalinstallation) ).
  7. Disassemble the center console by removing the following: Console armrest (see «CONSOLE ARMREST REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#consoles__console-armrest-removalinstallation) ) Center console latch panel (see «CENTER CONSOLE LATCH PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#consoles__center-console-latch-panel-removalinstallation) ) Center console panel (see «CENTER CONSOLE LATCH PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#consoles__center-console-latch-panel-removalinstallation) ) Center console beverage holder (see «CENTER CONSOLE BEVERAGE HOLDER REPLACEMENT»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#consoles__center-console-beverage-holder-replacement) ) Center console box (see «CENTER CONSOLE BOX REPLACEMENT»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#consoles__center-console-box-replacement) )
  8. Remove the shift lever assembly (A) from the console frame (B).

  1. Install the shift lever assembly (A) on the console frame (B).
  2. Assemble the center console by installing the following: Center console box (see «CENTER CONSOLE BOX REPLACEMENT»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#consoles__center-console-box-replacement) ) Center console beverage holder (see «CENTER CONSOLE BEVERAGE HOLDER REPLACEMENT»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#consoles__center-console-beverage-holder-replacement) ) Center console panel (see «CENTER CONSOLE LATCH PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#consoles__center-console-latch-panel-removalinstallation) ) Center console latch panel (see «CENTER CONSOLE LATCH PANEL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#consoles__center-console-latch-panel-removalinstallation) ) Console armrest (see «CONSOLE ARMREST REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#consoles__console-armrest-removalinstallation) )
  3. Install the center console (see «CENTER CONSOLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#consoles__center-console-removalinstallation) ).
  4. Install the shift cable on the shift lever, and adjust the shift cable (see step 6 under «Shift Cable Adjustment»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission) ).
  5. Install the beverage holder inner case (see step 11 under «CENTER CONSOLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#consoles__center-console-removalinstallation)
  6. Install the passenger's center console trim (see step 5 under «CENTER CONSOLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/mdx/ii-2010-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#consoles__center-console-removalinstallation)
