INTRODUCTION
Before diagnosing symptoms or intermittent faults, perform Basic Diagnostic Procedures in the BASIC TESTING - EXCEPT GS-R article and Self-Diagnostic Tests in the TESTS W/CODES - EXCEPT GS-R article. Use this article to diagnose driveability problems existing when a hard fault code is not present. The items listed in this article will not cause MIL to come on or store codes in PCM memory.
Note. Some driveability problems may have been corrected by manufacturer with a revised computer control unit. Check with manufacturer for latest computer application.
Symptom checks can direct technician to malfunctioning component(s) for further diagnosis. A symptom should lead to a specific component, system test, or adjustment.
Use intermittent test procedures to locate driveability problems that do not occur when vehicle is being tested. These test procedures should also be used if a soft (intermittent) trouble code was present but no problem was found during self-diagnostic testing.
Note. For test procedures, see: SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS - EXCEPT GS-R article. For specifications, see ADJUSTMENTS - EXCEPT GS-R or SPECIFICATIONS - EXCEPT GS-R article.
SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS
Symptom checks cannot be used properly unless the problem occurs while the vehicle is being tested. To reduce diagnostic time, ensure Basic Diagnostic Procedures in BASIC TESTING - EXCEPT GS-R article and Self-Diagnostic Tests in the TESTS W/CODES - EXCEPT GS-R article were performed before diagnosing a symptom. Recommended system and component checks may not apply to all vehicles. Trouble shoot symptom probable causes in order listed under symptom checks. Symptoms available for diagnosis include the following
- Engine Will Not Start
- Hard To Start
- Cold Fast Idle Too Low
- Cold Fast Idle Too High
- Idle RPM Fluctuates
- Misfire Or Rough Operation
- Lack Of Power
- Engine Stalls

INTERMITTENT PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS
Intermittent trouble code testing requires duplicating circuit or component failure to identify problem. These procedures may lead to computer setting a trouble code(s) which may help in diagnosis.
If vehicle does not produce a trouble code(s), monitor voltage or resistance values using a DVOM while attempting to reproduce conditions causing intermittent fault. A status change on DVOM indicates a fault has been located.
Use a DVOM to pinpoint faults. When monitoring voltage, ensure ignition switch is in ON position or engine is running. Ensure ignition is in OFF position or negative battery cable is disconnected when monitoring circuit resistance. Status changes on DVOM during test procedures indicate area of fault.
Intermittent Simulation
To reproduce conditions creating an intermittent fault, use following methods
- Lightly vibrate component.
- Heat component.
- Wiggle or bend wiring harness.
- Spray component with water.
- Remove/apply vacuum source.
Monitor circuit/component voltage or resistance while simulating intermittent fault. If engine is running, monitor for self-diagnostic codes. Use test results to identify a faulty component or circuit.
