Manual & Power Steering 8 illustrations ~2521 words

DESCRIPTION

The power steering system is rack and pinion type. Power assist is high at low vehicle speeds and low at high vehicle speeds. The speed sensor is a pump driven by a speedometer gear shaft, driven by a gear in the differential. When vehicle is in motion, the speed sensor pump relieves a portion of the hydraulic pressure, reducing power assist. On all models, system consists of a power rack and pinion steering gear, steering pump, fluid filter/reservoir, and cooler lines and hoses.

PUMP PRESSURE CHECK

  1. Check fluid level and belt tension. Adjust as necessary. Disconnect outlet hose from pump. Install Pump Joint Adapter (07NAK-SR3011A on Integra, 07QAK-POA0110 on 2.3CL, 07GAK-SE00112 on 3.5RL) onto pump outlet fitting. (Scheme 1) On 3.0CL, install Pump Joint Adapter (07VAK-P8A011A) with Adapter Plate (07VAK-P8A012A) onto pump outlet fitting.
  2. Install Hose Joint Adapter (07NAK-SSR3012A on Integra, 07QAK-POA0120 on 2.3CL, 07RAK-SO40121 on 3.0CL, 07GAK-SE00120 on 3.5RL & 3.2TL, or 07QAK-PV30120 on 2.5TL) onto outlet hose. Install Pressure Gauge Set (07406-0010001) between pump and hose joint adapters. Fully open shutoff and pressure control valves.
  3. Start and idle engine. Turn steering wheel lock to lock several times to warm fluid. Completely close shutoff valve.
  4. Gradually close pressure control valve until pressure gauge needle stabilizes. Read pressure. Immediately open shutoff valve. Pump pressure should be at least 924psi (65kg/cm 2 ) for Integra and 2.3CL, 1090 psi (76.5 kg/cm 2 ) for 3.0CL, or 1140 psi (80 kg/cm 2 ) for 3.5RL. Repair or replace pump if pressure is not within specification.
CAUTIONTo prevent damage to pump, DO NOT keep shutoff valve closed for longer than 5 seconds.

Scheme 1

Low-Speed Assist

  1. Check fluid level and belt tension. Start and idle engine. Turn steering wheel lock to lock several times to warm fluid. Attach a spring tension scale to steering wheel at outer end of spoke.
  2. Ensure vehicle is on a clean, dry surface. With engine at idle, pull tension scale. Read scale as soon as wheels begin to move. Reading should be a maximum of 7.7 lbs. (3.5 kg) for Integra, 6.6 lbs. (3.0 kg) for 2.3CL and 3.0CL, and 5.7 lbs. (2.6 kg) for 3.5RL.
  3. If reading does not meet specification, stop engine and disconnect hose between control unit and speed sensor at sensor. Plug hose and sensor fitting.
  4. Start and idle engine. Measure pull as described in steps 1) and 2). If scale reading is less than previously specified, replace speed sensor. If scale reading is higher, check steering rack and power steering pump.

Simulated High-Speed Assist (3.5RL)

  1. Check fluid level and belt tension. Start and idle engine. Turn steering wheel lock to lock several times to warm fluid. Stop engine. To simulate speeds greater than 30 MPH, disconnect hoses at speed sensor and connect By-Pass Tube Connector (07406-0010101) to speed sensor hoses.
  2. Attach spring tension scale to outer end of steering wheel spoke. With vehicle on clean, dry floor, start and idle engine. Pull on tension scale until wheels begin to move.
  3. If turning force is less than 5.7 lbs. (2.6 kg), speed sensor is okay. Check for pinched or bent sensor feed. If feed line is okay, problem is in pump or control unit. If turning force is more than specified, replace faulty speed sensor.
