Airbag 25 illustrations ~7358 words

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

WARNINGTo avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all WARNINGS and SERVICE PRECAUTIONS .

Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is designed to protect the driver and front passenger by activating when vehicle receives a sufficient front-end impact. System includes driver-side air bag, passenger-side air bag, SRS unit (with internal impact-safing sensor and back-up power circuit), and cable reel. (Scheme 1)

Scheme 1

Scheme 1

For air bag to deploy, impact-safing sensor (in SRS control unit) judges force of impact and, if necessary, transmits an ignitor signal to inflator inside air bag assembly, causing air bag to inflate.

Note. SRS wiring harness and connections are Yellow.

SERVICE PRECAUTIONS

Observe these precautions when working with air bag system

  1. Disable SRS before servicing any SRS or steering column component. Failure to do this could result in accidental air bag deployment, possibly causing personal injury. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(/acura/integra/iii-1993-2001/remont/airbag/#air-bag-restraint-system__disabling-activating-air-bag-system) .
  2. Wait about 3 minutes after disabling air bag system. A back-up power circuit capacitor (in SRS control unit) maintains system voltage for about 3 minutes after battery is disconnected. Servicing air bag system before 3 minutes may cause accidental air bag deployment, possibly causing personal injury.
  3. After an accident, all SRS components, including wiring harness and brackets, must be inspected. If any components are damaged or bent, they must be replaced, even if air bag did not deploy. Check steering column, knee bolster, instrument panel steering column reinforcement plate and lower brace for damage. DO NOT service/repair any component or wiring. If components or wiring are damaged or defective, replacement is required.
  4. Always wear safety glasses when servicing SRS or handling an air bag.
  5. DO NOT attempt to disassemble air bag assembly. Neither component has any serviceable or reusable parts.
  6. A replacement air bag assembly must be stored in its original special container until used for service. Special container must be stored in a clean, dry place, away from sources of extreme heat, sparks and high electrical energy.
  7. When placing a live air bag assembly on a bench or other surface, always face air bag and trim cover up, away from surface. This will reduce motion of air bag assembly if accidentally deployed.
  8. After deployment, air bag assembly is very hot. Wait 30 minutes before handling.
  9. After deployment, air bag surface may contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, which can irritate skin. Always wear safety glasses, rubber gloves and long-sleeved shirt during clean-up, and wash hands using mild soap and water. Follow correct disposal procedures. See «DISPOSAL PROCEDURES»(/acura/integra/iii-1993-2001/remont/airbag/#air-bag-restraint-system__disposal-procedures) .
  10. DO NOT allow any electrical source near inflator on back of air bag assembly.
  11. When carrying a live air bag assembly, trim cover pad should be pointed away from your body to minimize injury in case of accidental air bag deployment.
  12. DO NOT probe any wire through insulator; this will damage wire and eventually cause failure due to corrosion.
  13. When performing electrical tests, always use test harnesses recommended by manufacturer. See «SPECIAL TOOLS»(/acura/integra/iii-1993-2001/remont/airbag/#air-bag-restraint-system__special-tools) . DO NOT connect tester probes directly to component connector pins or wires.
  14. DO NOT use any type of electrical equipment other than that specified by manufacturer. See «SPECIAL TOOLS»(/acura/integra/iii-1993-2001/remont/airbag/#air-bag-restraint-system__special-tools) .
  15. If SRS is not fully functional for any reason, vehicle should not be driven until system is repaired. DO NOT remove any component or in any way disable system from operating normally. If SRS is not functional, park vehicle until repairs can be made.

SPECIAL TOOLS

To avoid accidental air bag deployment when testing or working around SRS, use recommended tools. See RECOMMENDED TOOLS table.

SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK

When ignition is turned on, SRS indicator light should come on for about 6 seconds and then go off. While vehicle is driven, light should not come on or flash. If SRS indicator light does not operate as specified, system must be inspected/repaired as soon as possible. See DIAGNOSIS & TESTING .

WIRE REPAIR

DO NOT repair any SRS wiring or harness connectors. If SRS wiring or harness connectors are faulty, replace complete wiring harness.

DIAGNOSIS & TESTING

WARNINGFailure to follow air bag service precautions may result in air bag deployment and personal injury. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS . After component replacement, ensure proper system operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .

SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM

Note. Radio/cassette or radio/CD player contains an anti-theft protection circuit. Whenever battery is disconnected, radio will go into anti-theft mode. When battery is reconnected, radio will display CODE and will be inoperative until proper code number is entered by vehicle owner.

WARNINGBefore proceeding with any testing procedure, check condition of all SRS connectors and ground points. When attaching SRS test harnesses, push connectors straight in until they are secure. DO NOT bend connector pins. Always use SRS test harnesses recommended by manufacturer. See SPECIAL TOOLS . DO NOT connect test probes directly to component connector pins or wires, as damage may result. Unless otherwise stated, always keep Red short connector on air bag connector when harness is disconnected.

SRS includes a self-diagnostic function that checks system for faults in SRS components and related wiring. A fault is present if SRS indicator light on instrument cluster

  1. Continues to glow after ignition is turned on and more than 6 seconds have elapsed.
  2. Glows or flashes while vehicle is driven.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC)

SRS indicator light indicates DTC by number of blinks when SCS service connector is connected to service check connector.

  1. DTC consists of a main code and a sub-code.
  2. Including most recent problem, up to three different malfunctions can be indicated.
  3. In case of a continuous failure, DTC will be indicated repeatedly.
  4. In case of an intermittent failure, SRS indicator light will indicate DTC 1 time, then it will stay on.
  5. If both a continuous and an intermittent failure occur, only DTC of continuous failure will be indicated.
  6. In case system is normal (no DTC), SRS indicator light will stay on.

Scheme 13

Scheme 13: RETRIEVING TROUBLE CODES
  1. Turn ignition off. Wait 10 seconds. Connect SCS service connector to service check connector. (Scheme 13) NOTE: If you do not wait 10 seconds, SRS unit will not be completely reset and will not output DTCs.
  2. Turn ignition. SRS indicator light comes on for about 6 seconds and goes off. DTC will be indicated next. Record DTC.

TROUBLESHOOTING OF INTERMITTENT FAILURES

Note. If there was a malfunction, but it does not recur, it will be stored in memory as an intermittent failure, and SRS indicator light comes on.

  1. Record DTC. Remove SCS service connector from service check connector. Erase DTC memory base. See «ERASING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE MEMORY»(/acura/integra/iii-1993-2001/remont/airbag/#air-bag-restraint-system__erasing-diagnostic-trouble-code-memory) .
  2. With car in neutral, start engine and let it idle. SRS indicator light comes on for about 6 seconds then goes off. Shake wire harness and connector and/or take a test drive to determine cause of intermittent failure. If problem recurs, SRS indicator light will stay on. If intermittent failure is not duplicated, system is OK.

ERASING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE MEMORY

Note. Use SCS service connector instead of a jumper wire. Otherwise, you may not erase memory since it is difficult to connect and disconnect a jumper wire quickly enough.

  1. Turn ignition switch off. Wait 10 seconds to ensure DTC memory is erased. Disconnect SCS service connector from service check connector, then connect SCS service connector to MES connector. (Scheme 14)
  2. Turn ignition switch. SRS indicator light will come on for about 6 seconds then go off. Remove SCS service connector from MES connector within 4 seconds after SRS indicator light went off.
  3. SRS indicator light comes on again. Reconnect SCS service connector to MES connector within 4 seconds after SRS indicator light comes on.
  4. SRS indicator light goes off. Remove SCS service indicator from MES connector within 4 seconds. SRS indicator light indicates that memory is erased by blinking 2 times.
