DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Note. For location of cooling fan system components, see COMPONENT LOCATIONS. (Scheme 5)-10.

DESCRIPTION

All models have electric cooling fans. Integra without A/C uses one cooling fan. All others have 2 cooling fans (radiator and condenser).

Integra

On models without A/C, fan is controlled by an Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) switch and relay. On models with A/C, fans (radiator and condenser) are controlled by ECT switch, radiator fan relay and condenser fan relay.

2.2CL, 2.3CL, 2.5TL, 3.0CL, & 3.2TL

Fans are controlled by fan control module and PCM/ECM. Fan control module receives inputs from Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) switches. Fan control module is located near glove box. Ground circuits for radiator fan relay and condenser fan relay can be switched by fan control module or PCM/ECM. Engine oil pressure temperature switch is used on 3.2TL only.

3.5RL

Fan control unit controls radiator and condenser fans. Both fans run whenever engine is running. Fans run at either low or high speed, depending on engine temperature. If A/C system pressure is higher than normal, both fans run at high speed regardless of engine temperature. Fan control unit is located under cover on passenger's front floorboard, near PCM/ECM. Fan control unit receives input from radiator fan control sensor, PCM/ECM, and A/C pressure switches.

BLEEDING COOLING SYSTEM

Always bleed air from cooling system after replacing coolant. Set heater for maximum heat. Remove radiator cap. Loosen drain plug and remove drain bolt (if equipped) from engine block. Drain coolant reservoir. Fill coolant reservoir to MAX mark with 50/50 water-coolant mixture. Loosen bleed bolt and fill radiator to base of filler neck. Close bleed bolt when coolant flows out without bubbles. Tighten bleed bolt. With radiator cap removed, start and operate engine to normal operating temperature. Add coolant if necessary and check for leaks.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

To trouble shoot cooling fans, use appropriate cooling fan wiring diagrams. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .

Fan Motor

Disconnect appropriate fan motor connector. Apply battery voltage between fan motor terminals. If fan motor operates, check related components and wiring. If fan motor does not operate, reverse battery leads. If fan still does not operate, replace fan motor.

Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Switch (Integra, 2.2CL, 2.3CL, 2.5TL, 3.0CL, & 3.2TL)

  1. Remove ECT switch(es). Suspend switch and thermometer in container partially filled with coolant. Heat coolant while monitoring temperature.
  2. Ensure switch continuity exists at specified temperatures. See «ECT SWITCH CONTINUITY SPECIFICATIONS»(/acura/integra/iii-1993-2001/remont/cooling-fan/#specifications-electric-cooling-fans) table. If continuity is not as specified, replace ECT switch. If continuity is as specified, check relay and related wiring.

Radiator Fan Control Sensor (3.5RL)

  1. Remove sensor from thermostat housing. Suspend switch and thermometer in container partially filled with coolant. Heat coolant while monitoring temperature.
  2. Measure sensor resistance at specified temperatures. See «RADIATOR FAN CONTROL SENSOR RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS»(/acura/integra/iii-1993-2001/remont/cooling-fan/#specifications-electric-cooling-fans) table. If continuity is not as specified, replace sensor. If continuity is as specified, check relay and related wiring.

Engine Oil Temperature Switch (3.2TL)

  1. Remove engine oil temperature switch from cylinder head cover. Suspend switch and thermometer in a container of water. Heat water while monitoring temperature.
  2. Check continuity between switch terminals at specified temperatures. Switch should close when temperature reaches 192-203°F (89-95°C). Switch should open when temperature drops to 18-36°F (10-20°C) less than when temperature switch closed.

Fan Relays

  1. Basic relay operation is the same, although physical appearance of relays may be different. Remove relay to be tested. Check continuity between relay terminals No. 1 and 3. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/acura/integra/iii-1993-2001/remont/cooling-fan/#specifications-electric-cooling-fans) . Continuity should not exist.
  2. Apply battery voltage between terminals No. 2 and 4. Ensure continuity exists between terminals No. 1 and 3. If continuity is not as specified, replace relay.

Radiator Fan Main Relay (3.5RL)

Remove radiator fan main relay. Continuity should exist between relay terminals No. 1 and 2 with battery voltage applied between terminals No. 3 and 5. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . With battery voltage not applied, check continuity between relay terminals No. 1 and 4. Continuity should exist. If continuity is not as specified, replace relay.

A/C Diode (Integra)

Disconnect 3-pin A/C diode. Diode is located above right kick panel. Check for continuity, in both directions, between terminals "A" and "B", and between terminals "B" and "C". (Scheme 1) Ensure continuity exists in only one direction.

A/C Diode (2.2CL, 2.3CL, 3.0CL & 3.2TL)

Disconnect 2-pin A/C diode. Diode is located under left side of dash. Check diode for continuity in both directions. Ensure continuity exists in only one direction.

Fan Control Module/Unit

If fan does not operate, check for open or short circuits in wiring between components and fan control module or fan control unit. See appropriate FAN CONTROL MODULE TERMINALS or FAN CONTROL UNIT TERMINALS table. Also see WIRING DIAGRAMS . If all wiring and other components are okay, replace fan control unit.
