Engine Controls - Remove/install/overhaul Acura Integra II

Removal & Installation 6 illustrations ~563 words

INTRODUCTION

Removal, overhaul and installation procedures are covered in this article. If component removal and installation is primarily an unbolt and bolt-on procedure, only a torque specification may be furnished.

Removal & Installation

  1. Mark between rotor and distributor housing for installation reference. Mark position of distributor housing-to-engine for installation reference. Remove distributor.
  2. DO NOT crank engine with distributor removed. Lubricate and install new "O" ring to distributor. Install distributor using reference marks. Ensure distributor coupling aligns with slot in camshaft.

Scheme 1: Overhaul

Remove cruise control actuator. Remove left camshaft upper timing belt cover. (Scheme 2) Remove timing belt. Remove upper timing belt camshaft pulley bolts. Remove left camshaft timing belt upper backing plate. Remove CRANK/CYL sensor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

TDC/CRANK/CYL sensor and distributor are combined as one unit. See DISTRIBUTOR (INTEGRA) .

Removal

WARNING:Do not smoke while working on fuel system. Keep open flames away from your work area.
  1. Remove the rear seats. See «SEAT ASSEMBLY (LEGEND)»(ref-30965-S09399619272001010900000)
  2. Remove the maintanance access cover.
  3. Disconnect the connector from the fuel pump.
  4. Remove the fuel pump mounting nuts.
  5. Remove the fuel pump from the fuel tank. (Scheme 3)

Installation

Install in reverse order of removal.

FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE

WARNING:ALWAYS relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel injection-related component. DO NOT allow fuel to contact engine or electrical components.

Note. Before disconnecting battery, obtain activation code to reset anti-theft stereo (if equipped).

Relieving Fuel Pressure

Remove negative battery cable. Loosen fuel tank filler cap. Place clean shop rag around fuel filter. Slowly loosen 6-mm service bolt on top of fuel filter (one complete turn) to relieve system pressure. Always replace washer under 6-mm bolt after loosening.

Scheme 4: Removal
  1. Relieve fuel pressure. On Legend, remove engine harness covers. (Scheme 4) Disconnect injector electrical connectors. Place a rag over pressure regulator fuel return hose.
  2. Disconnect vacuum hose and fuel return hose from pressure regulator. Disconnect fuel line from fuel rail. Remove fuel rail retaining nuts and fuel rail. Remove injectors from intake manifold.
  1. Slide new cushion rings onto injectors. Install new "O" rings coated with clean engine oil onto injectors. Insert injectors into fuel rail.
  2. Coat new injector seal rings with clean engine oil, and insert into intake manifold. Install injectors and fuel rail as an assembly to intake manifold. Replace fuel line-to-fuel rail washers. Tighten fuel line-to-fuel rail nuts. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
  3. Pressurize fuel system by turning on ignition with engine off for 2 seconds. Repeat fuel pressurizing procedure 3 times. Check for fuel leaks.

Sensor(s) may be difficult to remove when engine temperature is less than 120°F (48°C). Ensure O2 sensor(s) is free of contaminants. DO NOT use cleaning solvents of any type. Always use anti-seize compound on threads before installation. Tighten O2 sensor(s) to 33 ft. lbs. (45 N.m).

Disconnect and label all hoses and wires from throttle body. On Legend, drain coolant. Remove throttle body-to-intake manifold bolts. Remove throttle body. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 N.m).

Disconnect and label all hoses and wires from assembly. Remove throttle body. Remove air chamber mounting bolts. Remove bolts, and separate upper and lower air chambers from control valve chamber. (Scheme 5) To install, reverse removal procedure.
