VIN LOCATION

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is located on the left side of the dash panel at the base of the windshield. The VIN chart explains the code characters.

SEVERE & NORMAL SERVICE DEFINITIONS

Note. Use the Severe Service schedule if the vehicle to be serviced is operated under ANY (one or more) of these conditions:

Vehicle maintenance is based on mileage and operating conditions. Service schedules are based on the following primary operating conditions:

Normal Service

  1. Driven More Than 10 Miles Daily
  2. No Operating Conditions From Severe Service Schedule

Severe Service (Unique Driving Conditions)

  1. Repeated Short Trips (Less Than 10 Miles)
  2. Severe Dust
  3. Severe Cold Weather
  4. Areas Using Road Salt (Or Similar Materials)
  5. Driving On Rough And/Or Muddy Roads
  6. Towing A Trailer

CAMSHAFT TIMING BELT

CAUTION:Failure to replace a faulty camshaft timing belt may result in serious engine damage.

The condition of camshaft drive belts should always be checked on vehicles which have more than 50,000 miles. Although some manufacturers do not recommend belt replacement at a specified mileage, others require it at 60,000-100,000 miles. A camshaft drive belt failure may cause extensive damage to internal engine components on most engines, although some designs do not allow piston-to-valve contact. These designs are often called "Free Wheeling".

Many manufacturers changed their maintenance and warranty schedules in the mid-1980's to reflect timing belt inspection and/or replacement at 50,000-60,000 miles. Most service interval schedules in this manual reflect these changes.

Belts or components should be inspected and replaced if any of the following conditions exist:

  1. Cracks Or Tears In Belt Surface
  2. Missing, Damaged, Cracked Or Rounded Teeth
  3. Oil Contamination
  4. Damaged Or Faulty Tensioners
  5. Incorrect Tension Adjustment

Replace camshaft timing belt every 90,000 miles.

SERVICE LABOR TIMES

Note. For 1990 and newer vehicles, labor times are provided, where available, within appropriate SERVICE INTERVAL table in SCHEDULED SERVICES article.

WHEEL & TIRE SPECIFICATIONS

Wheel and tire information can be found on the label attached to the left side of the instrument panel, visible when the driver's door is open.

WHEEL TIGHTENING

Tighten wheel lug nuts to 80 ft. lbs. (110 N.m).

BATTERY WARNING

CAUTION:When battery is disconnected, vehicles equipped with computers may lose memory data. When battery power is restored, driveability problems may exist on some vehicles. These vehicles may require a relearn procedure. See appropriate COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.

All models use a BCI group number 45 battery with a 52-amp rating.

SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (AIR BAG)

Note. See the AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT Section.

Modifications or improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), can adversely affect system performance. DO NOT cover, obstruct or change the steering wheel horn pad in any way, as such action could cause improper function of the system. Use only plain water when cleaning the horn pad. Solvents or cleaners could adversely affect the air bag cover and cause improper deployment of the system.

WARNING:To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all warnings and service precautions. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section.
CAUTION:Disconnect negative battery cable before servicing any air bag system, steering column or passenger side dash component. After any repair, turn ignition key to the ON position from passenger's side of vehicle in case of accidental air bag inflation

AIR CONDITIONING SERVICING

CAUTION:Avoid breathing R-134a refrigerant and PAG lubricant vapors, exposure may irritate eyes, nose and throat. To remove R-134a from system use R-134a recycling equipment that meets SAE J2210 specifications. If accidental system discharge ventilate work area before resuming service.
WARNING:R-134a service equipment or vehicle A/C systems SHOULD NOT be pressure tested or leak tested with compressed air. Some mixtures of air/R134a have shown to be combustible at elevated pressures. These mixtures are dangerous and may cause fire and/or explosions. See the appropriate A/C SYSTEM GENERAL SERVICING article in the AIR CONDITIONING & HEAT section.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM

The anti-lock brake system contains electronic equipment that can be susceptible to interference caused by improperly installed or high output radio transmitting equipment. Since this interference could cause the possible loss of the anti-lock braking capability, such equipment should be installed by qualified professionals.

On models equipped with anti-lock brake systems, ALWAYS observe the following cautions:

  1. DO NOT attempt to bleed hydraulic system without first referring to the appropriate ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM article in the BRAKES Section.
  2. DO NOT mix tire sizes. As long as tires remain close to the original diameter, increasing the width is acceptable. Rolling diameter must be identical for all 4 tires. Some manufacturers recommend tires of the same brand, style and type. Failure to follow this precaution may cause inaccurate wheel speed readings.
  3. Use ONLY recommended brake fluids. DO NOT use silicone brake fluids in an ABS-equipped vehicle.

REPLACING BLOWN FUSES

Before replacing a blown fuse, remove ignition key, turn off all lights and accessories to avoid damaging the electrical system. Be sure to use fuse with the correct indicated amperage rating. The use of an incorrect amperage rating fuse may result in a dangerous electrical system overload.

BRAKE PAD WEAR INDICATOR

Indicator will cause a squealing or scraping noise, warning that brake pads need replacement.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER

Continued operation of vehicle with a severe malfunction could cause converter to overheat, resulting in possible damage to converter and vehicle.

COOLANT (PROPYLENE-GLYCOL FORMULATIONS)

CAUTION:To avoid possible damage to vehicle use only ethylene-glycol based coolants with a mixture ratio from 44-68% anti-freeze. DO NOT use 100% anti-freeze as it will cause the formation of cooling system deposits. This results in coolant temperatures of over 300° F (149°C) which can melt plastics. 100% anti-freeze has a freeze point of only -8° F (-22°C).
CAUTION:Propylene-Glycol Mixtures has a smaller temperature range than Ethylene-Glycol. The temperature range (freeze-boil) of a 50/50 Anti-Freeze/Water Mix is as follows:
  1. Propylene-Glycol -26° F (-32°C) - 257° F (125°C)
  2. Ethylene-Glycol -35° F (-37°C) - 263° F (128°C)
CAUTION:Propylene-Glycol/Ethylene-Glycol Mixtures can cause the destabilization of various corrosion inhibitors. Also Propylene-Glycol/Ethylene-Glycol has a different specific gravity than Ethylene-Glycol coolant, which will result in inaccurate freeze point calculations.

ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE SENSITIVE (ESD) PARTS

WARNING:Many solid state electrical components can be damaged by static electricity (ESD). Some will display a warning label, but many will not. Discharge personal static electricity by touching a metal ground point on the vehicle prior to servicing any ESD sensitive component.

ENGINE OIL

CAUTION:Never use non-detergent or straight mineral oil.

FUEL SYSTEM SERVICE

WARNING:Relieve fuel system pressure prior to servicing any fuel system component (fuel injection models).

HALOGEN BULBS

WARNING:Halogen bulbs contain pressurized gas which may explode if overheated. DO NOT touch glass portion of bulb with bare hands. Eye protection should be worn when handling or working around halogen bulbs.

RADIATOR CAP

CAUTION:Always disconnect the fan motor when working near the radiator fan. The fan is temperature controlled and could start at any time even when the ignition key is in the OFF position. DO NOT loosen or remove radiator cap when cooling system is hot.

RADIATOR FAN

WARNING:Keep hands away from radiator fan. Fan is controlled by a thermostatic switch which may come on or run for up to 15 minutes even after engine is turned off.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

CAUTION:Due to the different warranties offered in various regions and the variety of after-market extended warranties available, please refer to the warranty package that came with the vehicle to verify all warranty options.

NEW CAR LIMITED WARRANTY

Manufacturer will repair, or replace, at its option, any factory-installed part that is defective in material or workmanship under normal use. Coverage is for 3 years or 36,000 miles from date of first use, whichever occurs first.

REPLACEMENT PARTS WARRANTY

Acura replacement parts, when installed by an Acura dealer, are covered for 12 months or 12,000 miles. Parts purchased from, but not installed by, an Acura dealer are covered for 12 months only.

REPLACEMENT MUFFLER LIFETIME LIMITED WARRANTY

Covers replacement mufflers against defects in material or workmanship for as long as the original purchaser of the replacement muffler owns the vehicle on which the muffler is installed.

ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT BATTERY LIMITED WARRANTY

Covers a defective original battery completely for the first 24 months. If the battery fails after the first 24 months and before 36 months, a 50% credit will be given toward the purchase of a new battery.

REPLACEMENT BATTERY LIMITED WARRANTY

Covers a defective replacement battery completely for the first 6 months, if purchased from an Acura dealer. If battery fails after the first 6 months and before 36 months, a pro-rated credit will be given towards the purchase of a new battery. On 1991-93 models, replacement batteries are covered completely during the first 12 months of service. If battery fails after 12 months and before 36 months of service, a pro-rated credit will be given.

ACCESSORY LIMITED WARRANTY

Covers accessories installed prior to retail sale for defects in material or workmanship in normal use. Air conditioning and audio systems are covered for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first. All other dealer-installed accessories are covered for 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Accessories installed after retail sale are covered from the date of purchase and installation of the accessory by an authorized dealer for 12 months or 12,000 miles.

RUST PERFORATION LIMITED WARRANTY

Covers any original body parts that are rusted completely through for 36 months with no mileage limit. Rust without perforation is covered under the New Car Limited Warranty.

SEAT BELT LIMITED WARRANTY

Manufacturer will repair, or replace, at its option, free of charge, any seat belt that fails to function properly during normal use for the useful life of the vehicle. This includes all parts and labor charges.

EMISSION SYSTEM WARRANTY (EXCEPT CALIFORNIA)

Vehicle is warranted against defects in material or workmanship which would cause it to fail to conform with all applicable Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations as determined by a State Inspection and Maintenance Test. This warranty coverage lasts for 5 years or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

EMISSION SYSTEM DEFECT WARRANTY (CALIFORNIA)

If any emission-related part on the vehicle is defective, the part will be repaired or replaced by manufacturer for a period of 3 years or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Certain emission-related parts are covered for 7 years or 70,000 miles, whichever occurs first. See copy of warranty for specific components covered.

EMISSION SYSTEM PERFORMANCE WARRANTY (CALIFORNIA)

If vehicle fails to pass a smog test performed by a licensed Smog Check station within 3 years or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first, an authorized dealer will perform any repairs necessary for the vehicle to pass the smog test. Covers adjustments, diagnosis, repairs and replacements needed to bring vehicle into compliance with California emission requirements.

FUSE PANEL LOCATION

The interior fuse panel is located under the dashboard to the left of the steering column, the underhood fuse panel is located in the engine compartment next to the battery. The circuits protected by each fuse are listed on the plastic sheet inside the fuse panel cover.
