DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM

WARNINGNEVER disconnect crash sensor connector or standby power unit to disable SRS system.
  1. Disconnect and shield negative battery cable. Locate and disconnect Orange and Yellow SRS connectors on driver's side of center console, under carpet. (Scheme 9) DO NOT disconnect harness connection at crash sensor or air bag will deploy.
  2. After repairs, ensure all wiring and component connectors are reconnected. To activate air bag system, reconnect Orange and Yellow SRS connectors on driver's side of center console, under carpet. Reconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position (engine not running). If no fault codes are present, SRS warning light should go out after 10 seconds.

CONTACT REEL

Note. A new contact reel is zeroed at the factory and supplied with the locking screw installed. "Zeroed" means that the steering wheel can be turned to full lock in either direction without damaging the contact reel.

  1. If locking screw is removed, contact reel must be set to zeroed. (Scheme 10) Turn contact reel as far as possible to left.
  2. Then turn contact reel 2 full turns to the right. Continue turning contact reel in same direction, 3/4 of a turn to the screw hole.
  3. Screw hole should be over lock position at 1:00 O'clock. Install screw.

Scheme 11: SRS TEST RESISTOR
  1. Connect SRS Special Test Resistor (998-8695) to contact reel wiring connector in place of air bag module. (Scheme 11) Activate SRS. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-123460-S09321013032001092500000).
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position and ensure SRS warning light goes out after 10 seconds. If light does not go out, a fault code is set and memory must be cleared. After clearing fault codes, recheck SRS light operation. Perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section.
  3. If SRS warning light goes out after about 10 seconds, turn off ignition, disconnect negative battery cable and remove Special Test Resistor (998-8695) from air bag module connector. Position air bag module to steering wheel, and install wiring connector. Ensure wiring connector clicks into position. Install air bag module and steering wheel. See AIR BAG MODULE & STEERING WHEEL under «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION»(ref-123460-S15265583682001092500000).

CAUTIONDisconnect negative battery cable prior to working on steering column.

Note. The following procedure applies to cars with SRS.

Scheme 12

Scheme 12: Removal
  1. Ensure front wheels are pointing straight-ahead. Mark steering wheel to column location for installation reference. Turn ignition key to position No. 1 to release steering lock.
  2. Remove 2 screws at rear of steering wheel. (Scheme 12) Turn wheel through 90 degree in each direction to gain access to screws. Carefully lift out steering wheel module and disconnect connector from reverse of module.
  3. Remove screw from parking hole in steering wheel. Screw must remain attached to plastic strip. Remove steering wheel bolt and steering wheel.
