ENGINE COMPRESSION

Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Disconnect single wire from negative terminal of ignition coil(s). Check compression with all spark plugs removed, throttle valve wide open and at normal cranking speed (250-300 RPM).

CAUTIONFailure to disconnect ignition coil(s) negative terminal may cause damage to ECU.

VALVE CLEARANCE

Note. All models use hydraulic lifters. No adjustment is required.

IGNITION TIMING

Ignition timing is computer-controlled and is not adjustable.

ApplicationTiming
C70, S70 & V70
Non-Turbo10 @ 800
Turbo4-8 @ 850
S90 & V905 @ 750

IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE

Note. Cold (fast) idle is computer-controlled. Basic idle speed is not adjustable.

IDLE SPEED & CO LEVEL

ApplicationIdle RPM(2) CO Level
C70, S70 & V70(3) 850(3) .2-1.0%
S90 & V90750.2-1.0%
(1) Idle speed can only be checked, not adjusted. On C70, S70 & V70, CO level can only be checked. For S80 & V90 CO adjustment, see ADJUSTMENTS article. (2) Measured upstream of catalytic converter with oxygen sensor connected. (3) With cooling fan on.

THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (TPS)

Note. TPS is not adjustable.

  1. Loosen throttle link lock nut so link is separated and can spring back easily to its innermost position. Mount link in position.
  2. Attach link end with ball and lock nut to throttle spindle. Ensure throttle spindle is in contact with adjusting screw "B" and pulley is seated against idle stop "C". Tighten throttle link lock nut "A". Rotate pulley to ensure link seats against adjusting screw "B" before pulley seats against idle stop "C". (Scheme 2)

THROTTLE CABLE

Throttle pulley should move freely without sticking. Cable should be taut in idling position, without altering pulley position. Pulley should rest against idle stop. (Scheme 3) Adjust cable as necessary. Press accelerator pedal to floor and ensure pulley reaches full-load stop.

BASIC THROTTLE SETTING

Note. Basic throttle setting for S90 & V90 is not adjustable.

C70, S70 & V70

Loosen basic throttle setting adjustment screw lock nut. (Scheme 4) Turn screw until throttle is completely closed. On C70, S70 and V70, tighten adjustment screw until it touches throttle lever and then turn an additional 1/2 turn. On all models, tighten lock nut, making sure not to change adjustment. Recheck basic throttle setting.
