SHIFT LOCK

To prevent inadvertent movement of gear selector lever from position P, cars in certain markets are also equipped with an electrically operated shift lock function which blocks gear selector detent pin (1) in latch segment and locks mechanism in parking position (Scheme 14)(A).

To move lever from this position, ignition must be switched on and brake pedal depressed. Switching on ignition while depressing brake pedal activates a solenoid (2) in gear selector unit.

The solenoid locking pin (3) is pressed inward, enabling release button on lever to be pressed on normal manner and another position to be selected. (Scheme 14)(B).

KEYLOCK & SHIFT LOCK

In certain marketed, these functions are complemented by yet another safety feature in form of a keylock operated mechanically by a cable connected to ignition switch. The function is controlled by position of locking plunger (4) in ignition switch and by position of gear selector lever. This means that the lever must be in position P before key can be withdrawn from switch, also that key must be turned to position 1 or 2 before lever can be moved from that position. The key lock function is used only in combination with shift lock and was introduced in conjunction with modified gear selector lever installed in models from 1993 on.

The shift lock mechanism can be released to move gear selector from P position if battery is disconnected or in event of a fault in shift lock system. The mechanical release consists of a pushbutton (5) marked SHIFT-LOCK OVERRIDE on gear lever. When button is depressed, solenoid locking pin (3) is released, enabling lever to be moved from position P. (Scheme 15)(C). (in earlier models, mechanical release was located under gear lever brush beside text SHIFT-LOCK RELEASE.)

Note. On cars with key lock feature, ignition key must be first turned to position 1 or 2.

As long as fault persists, mechanical release and key must be used each time lever is to be moved from position P. The electrical circuit between brake light switch and solenoid incorporates a microswitch (6), which closes circuit only in position P to prevent operation of solenoid when driver operates brake pedal while driving.

START INHIBITOR FUNCTION

The gear selector lever is provided with a start inhibit function to prevent starting of engine while gear is selected. this feature ensures that engine can be started only in position "P" or "N", preventing vehicle from moving accidentally at the instant of starting.
