Steering column, checking for damage

Visual check

  1. Check all steering column parts for damage.

Functional check

  1. Check that steering column turns easily without jerking.
  2. Check that steering column can be adjusted for height and reach.

  1. Check gap dimension - A - between slide and bearing bracket.

Dimension A - Maximum 0.5 mm or smaller

  1. If dimension - A - is larger than 0.5 mm, the steering column is damaged and must be replaced.
  1. Remove airbag --> «69 - PASSENGER PROTECTION - AIRBAGS, SEAT BELTS»(ref-255354-S02126854732007053000000) .
  2. Remove steering wheel --> «69 - PASSENGER PROTECTION - AIRBAGS, SEAT BELTS»(ref-255354-S02126854732007053000000) .
  3. Remove coil ring with slip ring from steering column switch --> «69 - PASSENGER PROTECTION - AIRBAGS, SEAT BELTS»(ref-255354-S02126854732007053000000) .

Note. The steering must be in the center position (wheels in straight-ahead position) when the coil ring and slip ring are removed and installed. Coil ring with slip ring is secured as a new part in the center position with a cable tie. On vehicles with electronic stabilization program "ESP" , the Steering Angle Sensor G85 must be removed

> 69 - PASSENGER PROTECTION - AIRBAGS, SEAT BELTS .

  1. Remove steering column switch --> «94 - LIGHTS, SWITCHES - EXTERIOR»(ref-255357-S32150885732007053000000) .
  1. Push cover - 1 - up and secure e.g. with a screwdriver handle - 2 -.
  2. Remove four bolt - arrows -.
  3. Remove cover - 3 -.
  1. Pull off connectors - arrows - from steering lock housing.

  1. Drill out shear bolts or shear off using a suitable chisel - 1 -.

In addition, on vehicles with automatic transmissions, the locking cable for the ignition key removal lock must be unhooked --> 37 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - CONTROLS, HOUSING .

Remove ignition switch/lock cylinder --> 94 - LIGHTS, SWITCHES - EXTERIOR .

  1. Install steering lock housing to the new steering column.
  2. Reconnect connector for ignition starter switch.

Install ignition switch/lock cylinder --> 94 - LIGHTS, SWITCHES - EXTERIOR .

In addition, on vehicles with automatic transmissions, the locking cable for the ignition key removal lock must be hooked in --> 37 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - CONTROLS, HOUSING .

  1. Install new shear bolts.
  2. Tighten shear bolts until head shears off.
  1. Press on connectors - arrows - to steering lock housing.
  1. Install cover - 3 -.
  2. Install steering column switch --> «94 - LIGHTS, SWITCHES - EXTERIOR»(ref-255357-S32150885732007053000000) .
  3. Install coil ring with slip ring to steering column switch --> «69 - PASSENGER PROTECTION - AIRBAGS, SEAT BELTS»(ref-255354-S02126854732007053000000) .

On vehicles with electronic stabilization program "ESP" , the Steering Angle Sensor G85 must be installed --> 69 - PASSENGER PROTECTION - AIRBAGS, SEAT BELTS .

  1. Install steering wheel --> «69 - PASSENGER PROTECTION - AIRBAGS, SEAT BELTS»(ref-255354-S02126854732007053000000) .
  2. Install airbag --> «69 - PASSENGER PROTECTION - AIRBAGS, SEAT BELTS»(ref-255354-S02126854732007053000000) .
