All functions previously performed with the Scan Tool VAG 1551 or Scan Tool VAG 1551 can also be performed using the Vehicle Diagnostic Testing and Information System VAS 5051 using modes "Vehicle Self-diagnosis" and "Guided Fault Finding". Operating instructions for VAS 5051 tester.

  1. All fuses OK according to wiring diagram.
  2. Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 volts.

  1. Connect Diagnostic Wire VAS 5051/1 or VAS 5051/3 to Data Link Connector (DLC)
  2. Switch on ignition.

Select operating mode, vehicle system and function

  1. Press "Vehicle Self-Diagnosis" selection on display.
  2. Select the vehicle system to be tested on display (touch screen).
  3. Select the desired function on display.

Display will indicate the control module identification and the coding.

Display will indicate all relevant diagnostic functions.

Note. Display fields in functions 04 (Basic setting) and 08 (Read Measuring Value Block) are listed from top to bottom. The following test sequences are described for the Scan Tool VAG 1551.

  1. Connect Scan Tool VAG 1551 with Adapter Cable VAG 1551/3B to Data Link Connector (DLC).

Note. If nothing is indicated on display, check voltage supply for Scan Tool VAG 1551 according to wiring diagram. --> Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting and Component Locations Depending on the program, additional operating information can be printed out by pressing the HELP button of the Scan Tool VAG 1551. Function 00 "Automatic test sequence" can be performed in operating mode 1 "Rapid data transfer". This automatically checks all control modules installed in the vehicle. The --> button is used for advancing through the program sequence. The PRINT button is used for switching on the printer (lamp in button lights up).

Note. The following information applies to Passat with Climatronic models through 11.01 production only. OBD program functions on vehicles from 12.01 production must be performed using the Vehicle Diagnostic Testing and Information System VAS 5051 in mode "Guided Fault Finding".

Test requirements

  1. All fuses OK according to wiring diagram
  2. Voltage supply OK (at least 11.5 V).
  3. Scan Tool VAG 1551 or VAG 1552 connected.

Note. Connecting Scan Tool --> Vehicle Diagnostic Testing and Information System VAS 5051 or VAS 5052 or Scan Tool VAG 1551 , connecting . The following description applies only to Scan Tool VAG 1551.

Switch on ignition.

Switch on printer with the PRINT button (indicator lamp in button lights up).

Press button 1 to select operating mode 1, "Rapid data transfer".

  1. Connect Scan Tool VAG 1551 , input address word 08, "AC/ Heating electronics" and press --> until "Select function XX" appears in display.

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) table

  1. The following table lists all malfunctions, with the corresponding 5 digit code numbers, that can be recognized by Climatronic Control Module J255 and printed out by the Scan Tool VAG 1551.
  2. If malfunctions do not occur regularly, these are displayed as occurring sporadically ( "SP" ).
  3. DTC codes appear only on print-out.
  4. DTC table may also include a description of the type of malfunction.
  1. When a repair has been carried out, the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory must always be erased and checked again with the Scan Tool VAG 1551.
  2. If there is a specific complaint and no malfunctions are recognized after checking the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory, carry out function 03, "Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)" --> «Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM), (function 03)»(ref-255355-S20694173402007053000000) or function 08, "Read measuring value block" --> «Read Measuring Value Block (function 08)»(ref-255355-S13062707522007053000000) . If the display flashes but no DTCs were recognized, carry out function "Coding control module 07" and then function 04, "Basic setting". If necessary, check refrigerant system --> «A/C Refrigerant System Servicing»(ref-255355-S31794454622007053000000) .

* A malfunction has been found with Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) G22 and not with Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) G68. The malfunction is only recognized if 5 driving cycles (start, speed over 15 km/h (approximately 9.5 mph), and switch off take place within 4 minutes after starting engine and no speed signal is measured.

* The "Ignition time period signal off" comes from the Instrument Cluster Control Module J285. After switching off and restarting the engine (within 2 hours of switching engine off), the Climatronic Control Module J255 uses this signal to substitute the current Outside Air Temperature Sensor G17 and Fresh Air Intake Duct Temperature Sensor G89 values with the operating temperature values at time of shut off. Actual measured values (after two hours) from these sensors will otherwise be affected by heat radiated from the engine. The ignition time period off signal occurs only after starting.

Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM), (function 03)

Note. The following information applies to Passat with Climatronic models through 11.01 production only. OBD program functions on vehicles from 12.01 production must be performed using the Vehicle Diagnostic Testing and Information System VAS 5051 in mode "Guided Fault Finding". Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) must be carried out with engine not running, ignition switched on, and Climatronic switched off.

  1. Switch Climatronic off by pressing and holding "decrease blower speed" button until OFF' appears in display
  1. For definitive results, Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) must be carried out at an ambient temperature of at least 12 ° C (54 ° F) as displayed on A/C control head.

The Climatronic Control Module J255 is controlled by an internal microprocessor with On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capability. If malfunctions, short or open circuits occur on monitored components, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) are stored in memory.

OBD program functions on vehicles from 12.01 production must be performed using the Vehicle Diagnostic Testing and Information System VAS 5051 or VAS 5052 in mode "Guided Fault Finding".

Components, checking and adjusting with Vehicle Diagnostic Testing and Information System VAS 5051 or VAS 5052

  1. A/C refrigerant system, testing with pressure gauges

Due to the constant temperature/pressure relationship of refrigerant R-134a, approximate high-side system temperature can be determined based on system pressure.

Pressure gauges may have one or more temperature scales in addition to the pressure scale. Since various refrigerants have different temperature/pressure relationships, each gauge is specific for a particular refrigerant.

A/C Refrigerant System Troubleshooting

Note. The following procedures apply to vehicles without externally regulated compressor Denso 7SEU16 Compressor/engine applications --> Compressor/engine applications

Test conditions

  1. A/C refrigerant system fully charged; discharge, evacuate and recharge system if necessary
  2. Condenser and radiator clean and free of obstructions (spray clean if necessary)
  3. Air distribution can be adjusted correctly using control knobs (all air distribution flaps reach end positions)
  4. Wiring OK per wiring diagram
  1. Outside (ambient) air temperature between 20-30 ° C (68-86 ° F)
  2. Drive belts for A/C compressor and Generator in good condition and properly tensioned

Test 1: Air temperature drop from center instrument panel outlet, checking (A/C system cooling performance)

  1. Start engine.
  2. Set temperature control to maximum "cold" (if Manual A/C) or "LO" (if Climatronic).
  3. Manual A/C: press "A/C" button and select second blower speed.
  4. Climatronic: Select minimum blower speed (manual override) by pressing "decrease blower speed" button (observe front "blower speed" display in control head).
  1. Adjust air distribution to instrument panel outlets.
  2. Insert thermometer into center instrument panel outlet and raise engine speed to approximately 1500 RPM.

Specified result

With humidity normal and outside (ambient) temperature between 20-25 ° C (68-77 ° F), system is cooling satisfactorily if air temperature from center instrument panel vent drops below 10 ° C (50 ° F) within 1 minute.

For higher ambient temperatures and/or higher humidity, specified air temperature from center instrument panel vent can be slightly higher.

If specified reading is not obtained, perform tests 2 and 3, then compare results of all three tests --> table, SYSTEM PRESSURE TESTING .

Test 2: A/C system high pressure, checking

  1. Connect high- and low-pressure hoses of refrigerant recovery/ recycling/recharging unit Kent-Moore ACR 4 or equivalent, to high- and low-pressure service valves.
  2. Disconnect electrical connector from coolant fan.
  3. Start engine.
  4. Set temperature control to maximum "hot" (if Manual A/C) or "HI" (if Climatronic).
  1. Manual A/C: press "A/C" button and select highest blower speed.
  2. Adjust air distribution to footwell outlets.
  3. Raise engine speed to approximately 1500 RPM.

Specified result

System high pressure is normal if high-pressure gauge reads 232 psi (16 bar) within 30 seconds.

If specified reading is not obtained, also perform test 3 and compare results of all three tests --> table, SYSTEM PRESSURE TESTING .

Test 3: A/C system low pressure, checking

  1. Connect high- and low-pressure hoses of refrigerant recovery/recycling/recharging unit Kent-Moore ACR 4 , or equivalent, to high- and low-pressure service valves.
  2. Start engine.
  3. Set temperature control to maximum "cold" (if Manual A/C) or "LO" (if Climatronic).
  4. Manual A/C: press "A/C" button and select first blower speed.
  1. Climatronic: Reduce blower speed to lowest setting (manual override) by pressing "decrease blower speed" button (observe front "blower speed" display in control head).
  2. Adjust air distribution to instrument panel outlets.
  3. Raise engine speed to 1500 RPM.

Specified result

System low pressure is normal if low-pressure gauge reads 22-36 psi (1.5-2.5 bar) within 30 seconds.

If specified reading is not obtained, compare results of all three tests --> table, SYSTEM PRESSURE TESTING .
