Removing
Installation position of locking cable

Check whether a coded radio is installed. If so, obtain anti-theft coding.
With ignition switched off disconnect battery Ground (GND) cable.
Remove steering wheel, height and reach adjustment handle and steering column switch trim. Removal and Installation
Turn ignition key to "ignition on" position.
Shift selector lever into "P" position.
Pull out clip -2- for locking cable -3-.

Pull locking cable out of steering lock -1-.
Press sleeve on selector lever handle down.
Pull selector lever handle off upward with button pressed.
Carefully pry selector lever mechanism cover out at rear left and right and lift off.
Remove center console and arm rest if part of original equipment. Removal and Installation
Disconnect locking cable from locking lever at selector mechanism.
Press tabs of retaining clip together -arrows-.
Pull locking cable out of selector mechanism.
Installing
Note. Make sure locking cable is routed correctly when installing Illustration -N37- -0667, LOCKING CABLE . Locking cable must not be kinked. Adjust locking cable after installing LOCKING CABLE, ADJUSTING .
Shift selector lever into "P" position.
Press locking cable into support bracket on selector lever housing until tabs on retaining clip -arrows- spring outward.
Attach locking cable in locking lever.
Turn ignition key to "ignition on" position.
Push locking cable into steering lock Fig. A37-0206, LOCKING CABLE => Pull out clip -2- for locking cable -3-. .
Push clip into locking cable.
Make sure that clip is properly located.
Adjusting locking cable LOCKING CABLE, ADJUSTING .

Removing
Remove cover from engine.
Check whether a coded radio is installed. If so, obtain anti-theft coding.
With ignition switched off disconnect battery Ground strap.
Remove power steering reservoir from battery carrier. Do not loosen hoses.
Tie power steering reservoir to lock carrier.
Remove battery.
Remove battery carrier.
Pull intake hose -1- and connector -2- off mass air flow sensor.

Remove bolts -3-, -4- and -5-.
Remove air cleaner complete.
Disconnect connector from speedometer sensor.
Remove electrical connections -1- to -4- at transmission.

- To multi-function transmission range (TR) switch -F125
- On transmission vehicle speed sensor (VSS) -G38
Unclip wiring harness from retainer on transmission and place to one side.
Remove bracket for power steering pressure lines/hoses, with retainer for wiring harness, from transmission.
Position selector lever in position "P" and press selector lever cable -1- off selector shaft lever -2- with a screwdriver.
Remove circlip -3- at selector lever cable support bracket and remove selector lever cable.
Note. Do not kink selector lever cable.
2.0L Engine
Unscrew sensor from speedometer drive.

Remove bolt -2-.
Remove heat shield -3- from engine exhaust manifold.
Continued for all vehicles
Remove Ground cable -1- from upper engine/transmission securing bolt.
Scheme 79
Disconnect electrical connections -3- and -4- on Starter.
Separate connector -2- and pull out of retainer.
Remove wiring harness retainer on Starter.
Remove upper Starter motor bolt.
Clamp-off ATF cooler hoses with 3094 and disconnect at ATF cooler.
Scheme 80
Seal off ATF cooler with clean plugs.
Remove upper engine/transmission securing bolts.
Erect support device 10-222A with adapter 10-222A/8.

Note. Do not seat the adapter 10-222A/8 on the securing bolts for the front end/fender.
Take weight of engine/transmission assembly on spindles.
Remove front left wheel bolts.
Raise vehicle.
Remove left front wheel.
Remove sound insulation tray -arrows-.

Remove charge air pipe between charge air cooler and exhaust gas turbocharger.

Remove right sound insulation.
Remove ATF oil pan protective plate -arrows-.

Remove power steering pressure lines/hoses from Starter and transmission.
Remove lower Starter bolt
Remove Starter. Removal and Installation
Remove right hand inner constant velocity joint protective cover from engine if installed.
Disconnect drive shafts at transmission flanges.
Raise right drive shaft and secure.
Remove pendulum support -arrows-.

Remove additional radiator fan on right-hand side of vehicle, if part of original equipment. Unclip cap for torque converter cover.
Remove nut -arrow- from torque converter (Qty. 3) using special tool V 175.
Scheme 86
Turn crankshaft 120° further in each case.
Turn steering to left lock.
Mark installation position of ball joint bolts on left-hand control arm and remove bolts.
Remove bolts (arrows).

Disconnect left coupling rod -1- from control arm and turn rod upward.
Scheme 88
Swing wheel bearing housing outward.
Guide left-hand drive shaft -2- out between assembly carrier and transmission.
Lift drive shaft and secure to suspension strut with wire.
Disconnect exhaust system after front exhaust pipe at double clamp. Remove front exhaust system supports from assembly carrier if necessary. Remove left assembly mounting -2- hex bolts -arrows- from left mount -1-.
Scheme 89
Carefully tilt engine and transmission by lowering left-hand spindle approx. 60 mm on support bar 10-222A.
Remove left mount -1- from transmission -arrows-.
Scheme 90
Bolt Support rails VW 457 to both pendulum support securing holes on subframe.
Scheme 91
Insert spacers totaling 6 mm between subframe and support rail VW457/1.
A- Qty. 2 hex bolts M 8 x 25
Install support device 3300A and tighten with bolt -B-.
Tilt engine and transmission forward with support device 3300A.
Set up transmission support 3282.
Scheme 92
The transmission support 3282 is set up with the adjusting plate 3282/2 for removing the automatic transmission 01M.
The symbols on the adjusting plate indicate the supports required.
Move jack VAG 1383A with transmission support 3282 underneath and support transmission.
Scheme 93
Place safety support pin on oil pan and secure to transmission housing (arrow).
Scheme 94
Turn right-hand drive flange so that flattened side -arrow- is in a vertical position.
Scheme 95
Remove lower engine/transmission connecting bolts.
Press transmission off engine while pressing torque converter out of drive plate.
Press torque converter against ATF pump.
Lower transmission slightly.
While lowering guide power steering pressure line past transmission.
Swivel transmission and carefully lower, guiding right-hand drive flange past engine and support 3300A.
Check also that multi-function TR switch does not contact assembly carrier.
Secure torque converter to prevent it falling out.
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.
When installing the torque converter, ensure that both drive pins engage in the ATF pump inner wheel recesses.
Before installing, ensure that dowel sleeves are correctly located.
When installing transmission, observe torque converter contact impression on drive plate.
Replace selector cable anchorage locking washer.
Check selector lever cable adjustment, adjust if necessary SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, CHECKING AND ADJUSTING .
Check and top off ATF level ATF LEVEL, CHECKING .
