ENGINE CODE
Engines are identified by a 3-letter code stamped on the engine. For engine code locations (Scheme 3)- see scheme 6. Engine codes are also located on the vehicle data plate.
Note. The engine number for the 1.8L turbo can be found on the mating flange between the engine and transmission. The engine code is also imprinted on the front engine lift eyelet (visible after removing cover above fuel injectors).
Scheme 3
Scheme 4
Note. Engine code for 1.9L TDI is located between the diesel injection pump and the exhaust manifold on the engine block.
Scheme 5
Note. Engine code for 2.0L AEG is located on machined pad on front of cylinder block above crankcase breather.
Scheme 6
Note. Engine code and serial number for 2.0L AVH and AZG is located can be found on the flange between engine/transmission. Additionally there is a sticker on the timing belt guard containing the engine code and serial number. The engine code is also included on the vehicle data plate.
