  1. Connect VAG 1551 scan tool (VAG 1552) and select "Engine Electronics" address word 01. See «VAG 1551 SCAN TOOL (ST), CONNECTING AND SELECTING "ENGINE ELECTRONICS" ADDRESS WORD 01»(ref-203892-S02061160712005110800000). When doing this the engine must be running at idle speed.   1. Read the readiness code. See «READINESS CODE, READING (SCAN TOOL FUNCTION 15»(ref-203892-S38778616292005110800000) ). If DTC memory has been erased, verify repair via appropriate display group. See «READINESS CODE, CREATING»(ref-203892-S31097275142005110800000) .
  2. Press --> button.
  3. Press buttons -0- and -6- for the "End Output" function and press -Q- button to confirm input.

  1. Disconnect 3-pin connector from camshaft position sensor.
  2. Connect multimeter using test leads from VW 1594 to measure voltage at terminals 1 and 3 of connector. (Scheme 256): Connecting Multimeter To Measure Voltage At Terminals 1 And 3 Of CMP Connector
  3. Turn on ignition.
  4. Measure voltage between terminals 1 and 3. Specification: 9-14.5 volts
  5. Turn off ignition.

  1. Connect VAG 1598/18 test box to Engine Control Module (ECM) wiring harness. (Scheme 257): Connecting VAG 1598/18 Test Box To Engine Control Module (ECM) Wiring Harness
  2. Check wiring between test box and 3 -pin connector for open circuit using wiring diagram. Terminal 1 and test box socket 56 Terminal 2 and test box socket 44 (Scheme 258): Identifying CMP Connector Terminals Resistance: max. 1.5 ohms ( ohm )
  3. Check wire between 3 -pin connector and relay panel - G1/4- for open circuit using wiring diagram. Terminal 3 and relay panel -G1/4- Resistance: max. 1.5 ohms ( ohm )
  4. Additionally check all wires for short circuit to each other. Terminal 3 and test box socket 44 Terminal 3 and test box socket 56 Terminal 2 and test box socket 56

Specification: INFINITE ohms ( ohm )

If no wiring malfunction is detected and voltage was present between terminals 1 and 3

  1. Replace distributor with camshaft position sensor. If no wiring malfunction is detected and no voltage was present between terminals 1 and 3
  2. Replace Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS, OVERVIEW»(ref-203893-S17623055512005110800000) .
  3. Read the readiness code. See «READINESS CODE, READING (SCAN TOOL FUNCTION 15»(ref-203892-S38778616292005110800000) ). If DTC memory has been erased, verify repair via appropriate display group. See «READINESS CODE, CREATING»(ref-203892-S31097275142005110800000) .

Note. The check must be carried out during a test drive as knock control is not active with an engine load exceeding 3 ms.

  1. Perform test drive and observe specification for knock control on display (second technician necessary).   3. Press --> button.

  1. Disconnect connector and ignition wire from ignition coil -N152-.
  2. Connect multimeter with test leads from VW 1594 to measure resistance.
  3. Check ignition coil primary resistance with multimeter (Fluke 83 or equivalent) between terminals 1 and 15. Specification: 0.5 -1.2 ohms ( ohm ) (Scheme 262): Checking Ignition Coil Primary & Secondary Resistance With Multimeter
  4. Check ignition coil secondary resistance with multimeter between terminals 4 and 15. Specification: 3-4 k ohm If the specifications are not attained
  5. Replace ignition coil -N152-. see scheme 1

  1. Disconnect 3-pin connector from ignition coil.
  2. Connect multimeter using test leads from VW 1594 to measure voltage at terminals 1 and 3 of connector. (Scheme 263): Connecting Multimeter To Measure Voltage At Terminals 1 And 3 Of Ignition Coil Connector
  3. Turn on ignition.
  4. Measure voltage between terminals 1 and 3. Specification: 9-14.5 volts
  5. Turn off ignition.

If the specification is not attained

  1. Check wire between 3 -pin connector contact 1 and Ground for open circuit according to wiring diagram. Wire resistance: Max. 1.5 ohms ( ohm )
  2. Check wire between 3 -pin connector contact 3 and relay plate for open circuit according to wiring diagram. Resistance: max. 1.5 ohms ( ohm ) If no wiring malfunction is detected and voltage was present between terminals 1 and 3
  3. Replace ignition coil -N152-. If no wiring malfunction is detected and no voltage was present between terminals 1 and 3
  4. Replace Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220-. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS, OVERVIEW»(ref-203893-S17623055512005110800000) .
  5. Read the readiness code. See «READINESS CODE, READING (SCAN TOOL FUNCTION 15»(ref-203892-S38778616292005110800000) ). If DTC memory has been erased, verify repair via appropriate display group. See «READINESS CODE, CREATING»(ref-203892-S31097275142005110800000) .

  1. Disconnect the ignition coil engine harness center connector.
  2. Connect VAG 1527B voltage tester with test leads from VW 1594 and adapters VW 1594/15 to terminals 2 and 3 of the connector. (Scheme 264): Connecting VAG 1527B Voltage Tester To Terminals 2 And 3 Of Ignition Coil Connector
  1. Operate starter and check ignition signal from ECM. LED must flicker
  2. Turn off ignition.

If the LED does not flicker

  1. Connect VAG 1598/18 test box to ECM wiring harness. (Scheme 265): Connecting VAG 1598/18 Test Box To ECM Wiring Harness
  2. Check wiring between 3 -pin connector and test box for open circuit according to wiring diagram. Terminal 2 and test box socket 8 Resistance: max. 1.5 ohms ( ohm )
  3. Additionally check the wiring for short circuit to each other. Terminal 1 and test box socket 8 Terminal 3 and test box socket 8 Specification: INFINITE ohms ( ohm )

If no wiring malfunction is detected and voltage was present between terminals 1 and 3

  1. Replace ECM -J220-. See «COMPONENT LOCATIONS, OVERVIEW»(ref-203893-S17623055512005110800000) .
  2. Read the readiness code. See «READINESS CODE, READING (SCAN TOOL FUNCTION 15»(ref-203892-S38778616292005110800000) ). If DTC memory has been erased, verify repair via appropriate display group. See «READINESS CODE, CREATING»(ref-203892-S31097275142005110800000) .

If the voltage supply and activation is OK.

  1. Reconnect 3-pin harness connector and ignition wire to ignition coil.
  2. Connect LED voltage tester with test leads to terminals 1 and 15 on ignition coil. (Scheme 266): Connecting LED Voltage Tester With Test Leads To Terminals 1 And 15 On Ignition Coil CAUTION: During the following test do not touch the terminals of the ignition coil or test cables.
  3. Operate starter. The LED must flicker
  4. If necessary, replace ignition coil power output stage.
