Early Production 1999 Golf, GTI, & Jetta
Information in this article applies up to early production 1999 Golf, GTI and Jetta vehicles. To identify early production vehicles, the 7th and 8th characters of the VIN are 1H.
Required tools and equipment
- VAS5061 Airbag adapter 1- Connector/ignition wire 3- Connector/Ground (GND) wire Golf from 1992 and up
Front seat, removing and installing (vehicles without side airbags)
| WARNING | Before working on the electrical system: remove battery Ground (GND) strap. |
Note. Depending on the type of equipment installed in vehicle, slight deviations must be taken into account when removing and installing. For seats with seat heating and side airbags, the battery must be disconnected and the cable connections must be disconnected before removing seat. Before disconnecting battery, obtain radio anti theft code. After connecting battery, check vehicle equipment (radio, clock, electric window regulators) according to repair manual and/or owners manual.
Identifying Front Seat Components (Vehicles Without Side Airbags). Scheme 1
Removing
- Remove trim strip -1- from inner guide track toward rear.
- Remove wedge -2- on rear side of cap -3- using flat pliers and remove cap from outer guide tracks.
- Adjust seat forward, press securing clamp -4- together and remove.
- Slide seat rearward out of guide tracks.
Front seat, removing and installing (vehicles with side airbags)
Note. Before disconnecting ignition and Ground (GND) wire, the technician must be electrostatically discharged (touch closing wedge for door or chassis briefly). Connector -2- (at VAS5061 airbag adapter) is not required.
- Disconnect ignition and Ground (GND) wire from side airbag.
- Connect connector -1- (at VAS5061 airbag adapter) in connector housing - 4-.
- Connect connector -3- (at VAS5061 airbag adapter) in connector housing - 5-.
- Disconnect harness connectors for seat heating and seat adjustment if equipped.
Installing
Installation is reverse of removal.
- Check glide pieces -6- (left and right) and front glide piece -5- for damage, replace if necessary.
- Lubricate glide pieces -6- (left and right) and front glide piece (multi - purpose grease). NOTE: If the Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K75- indicates a malfunction following seat installation, use the VAG1551 to erase DTC memory and check it again. See «ERASE DTC MEMORY»(ref-203116-S30679827432005103000000) for up to 08.94 or «ERASING DTC MEMORY»(ref-203116-S03612545202005103000000) for 09.94 and up.
Front seat backrest, removing and installing

- Remove front seat. See «SEATS, FRONT»(/volkswagen/golf/mk3-1991-2000/remont/seats/#seats-frames-a3-platform) .
- Press off control knob -4-.
- Drive out expander pins -5- (left and right) toward inside.
- Front expander pin will be pressed against seat frame.
- Press expander pin downward from above using screwdriver.
- Remove cover -6- from backrest frame.
- Remove Phillips-head screw -11-.
- Pull off retainers -7- (left and right).
- Pull backrest frame off mounting pin -13-.
- Check bushings -12- (left and right) for damage; replace if necessary.
- Replace Phillips-head screw -11- (with thread locking compound).
- Remove adhesive residue from nut threads with tap or thread chaser.
- Coat threads of new screw with locking compound AMV197 000 01.
Seat bench and back rest (split seat), removing
- Lift seat bench using pull loop.
- Remove socket-head bolts -1- and take out seat bench along with hinges -2-.
- Fold down both seat backs.
- Remove locks -1- from adapters -3- on seat back center bracket -2-.
- Press back latching hook -1- on left and/or right using screwdriver.
- Pull seat back -2- upward out of seat back bracket -3-.
- Pull seat back out of center bracket and remove from vehicle.
Center arm rest, removing and installing (Jetta)
Note. The center arm rest can only be folded down with the seat back in the upright position (installed position).

- Center arm rest Removing: Remove back rest (split seat). See «Seat bench and back rest (split seat), removing»(/volkswagen/golf/mk3-1991-2000/remont/seats/#seats-frames-a3-platform__seat-bench-and-back-rest-split) . Fold down center arm rest. Remove trim -2-. Remove Phillips-head screws -5-. Press bearing on bracket -4- apart (arrow -D-) and disconnect bearing rod for center arm rest. (Bearing rod cannot be removed through opening on bearing).
- Trim Removing: Remove back rest (split seat). See «Seat bench and back rest (split seat), removing»(/volkswagen/golf/mk3-1991-2000/remont/seats/#seats-frames-a3-platform__seat-bench-and-back-rest-split) . Fold down center arm rest. Disconnect side tab (arrow -A-) and center tab (arrow -B-) and push trim upward (arrow -C-).
