ABS/EDL hydraulic unit, bleeding using Basic Setting (VAG 1551 function 04) Volkswagen Golf Mk3

ABS/EDL hydraulic unit, bleeding using Basic Setting (VAG 1551 function 04)

On vehicles with EDL, "Basic Setting" function 04 is used to bleed the ABS hydraulic unit. Use of the "Basic Setting" function for bleeding is only necessary when at least one brake fluid reservoir is completely empty (e.g. leaks in brake system).

WARNINGMake sure that filling/bleeding pressure does not exceed 1 bar (approx. 14-1/2 psi) when using a pressure bleeder. For this reason, operating pressure on some filler/bleeder units must be reduced to 1 bar. If the filling/bleeding pressure exceeds 1 bar, there is no guarantee that the ABS hydraulic unit is adequately bled. Connect brake system filler/bleeder unit. Connect VAG 1551 scan tool, switch ignition on, and select "Brake Electronics" address word 03. See VAG 1551 scan tool, connecting and selecting function .

Location: bolted to ABS hydraulic unit, left side of engine compartment

CAUTIONDetermine correct radio anti-theft coding before disconnecting the battery.
  1. Disconnect battery.
  2. Remove coolant expansion tank and swing to one side.
  3. Disconnect harness connector from ABS control module.
  4. Connect bleeder bottle with bleeder hose to left -front brake caliper bleeder screw and open bleeder screw.
  5. Depress brake pedal at least 60 mm (2-3/8 in.).
  6. Install brake pedal loading device from VAG 1238 B.
  7. Close front left bleeder screw.
  8. Remove heat shield from tandem master brake cylinder.
  9. Disconnect brake lines from brake master cylinder and ABS hydraulic unit and seal brake lines and threaded holes with plugs from repair kit Part No. 1H0 698 311 A.
  1. Remove Torx socket-head bolts (T25) on ABS hydraulic unit mounting bracket.
  2. Remove ABS hydraulic unit.
  3. Pull ABS hydraulic pump motor harness connector off ABS control module.
  4. Remove bolts from ABS control module and pull control module off. Do not tilt ABS control module when pulling off.
  5. Cover control module solenoids with a lint-free cloth.

After separating the ABS control module and ABS hydraulic unit, protect the valve dome.

CAUTIONOnly remove the sealing plugs on the ABS hydraulic unit just before the particular brake line is to be installed. If the sealing plugs are removed too soon, brake fluid can escape and it can then no longer be guaranteed that the unit is sufficiently filled or adequately bled. There must not be anything in the area of the ABS control module that can contaminate the valve block.
  1. Bolt ABS control module to ABS hydraulic unit. Maximum tightening torque: 4 N.m (35 in lb)
  2. Connect ABS hydraulic pump motor harness connector.

The remainder of the installation is the reverse of the removal sequence.
