Quantum
On Turbo Diesel 5-cylinder engines, the first stage (left side fan - TD) thermoswitch comes on at 198-207°F (92-97°C), and goes off at 183-198°F (84-92°C); the second stage (right fan - TD)thermoswitch comes on at 210-221°F (99-105°c), and goes off at 196-208°F (91-98°C).
On 4-cylinder gas engines there is a 2-pole or a 3-pole thermoswitch. The 2-pole thermoswitch comes on at 199-208°F (93-98°C), and goes off at 190-199°F (88-93°C).
On the 3-pole thermoswitch, the first stage comes on at 198-207°F (92-97°C), and goes off at 183-198°F (84-92°C); the second stage comes on at 216-226°F (102-108°C), and goes off at 201-216°F (94-102°C).
Vanagon
The first stage thermoswitch comes on at 199-208°F (93-98°C), and goes off at 190-199°F (88-93°C); the second stage thermoswitch comes on at 210-221°F (99-105°C), and goes off at 196-207°F (91-97°C).
All Other Models
Two-pole thermoswitches come on at 198-208°F (92-98°C), and go off at 183-196°F (84-91°C). On 3-pole thermoswitches, the first stage comes on at 198-208°F (92-98°C), and goes off at 183-196°F (84-91°C); second stage comes on at 210-221°F (99-105°C), and goes off at 196-219°F (91-104°C).
Radiator cap is located on expansion tank at left side of engine compartment. Radiator cap pressure relief valve opens at 13-17 psi (.9-1.2 kg/cm 2 ) to allow flow to expansion tank. Cap also opens at vacuum of .3-1.45 psi (.02-.10 kg/cm 2 ) to allow flow from expansion tank.
All Exc. Vanagon
On Diesel engines, radiator cap pressure relief valve opens at approximately 17-19 psi (1.2-1.3 kg/cm 2 ).
On Gasoline engines except Quantum 5-cylinder, radiator cap pressure relief valve opens at approximately 17-21 psi (1.2- 1.5 kg/cm 2 ). On Quantum 5-cylinder engines, radiator cap pressure relief valve opens at approximately 17-19 psi (1.2-1.3 kg/cm 2 ).
Thermostat is located in left half of water pump housing. Thermostat begins opening at 185°F (85°C), and fully opens at 221°F (105°C). Minimum opening distance of thermostat is.315" (8.00 mm). (Scheme 8)
On Diesel and Turbo Diesel engines, thermostat begins opening at 185-189°F (85-87°C), and fully opens at 221°F (105°C). On gasoline engines except Quantum 5-cylinder, thermostat begins opening at 185°F (85°C), and fully opens at 221°F (105°C). On Quantum 5-cylinder engines, thermostat begins opening at 189°F (87°C), and fully opens at 216°F (102°C).
