THRUST ANGLE
Note. VW refers to thrust angle as direction of rotation.
Scheme 4
FRONT AXLE RIDE HEIGHT
Note. Vehicle must be on standing with full weight on wheels.
Standing height and vehicle longitudinal tilt influence alignment test values. Standing height and vehicle longitudinal tilt must be measured or standing height must be adjusted before checking/adjusting wheel alignment.
Ride height dimension is measured from upper shock absorber mount bolt head to center of lower shock absorber bolt. (Scheme 5) If necessary, adjust to prescribed height by turning nut on torsion bar tensioning lever. For standing height specification, see WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS.
LONGITUDINAL TILT
Note. Ensure long member surface is clean and smooth in measurement area.
Measuring & Adjusting
Measure longitudinal tile (correction value) at long member. (Scheme 6) Make sure the surface of the longitudinal member in measuring range is clean and even. Correction value is added or subtracted from caster, as measured by alignment computer, to determine caster value on front axle. If vehicle is inclined to front, add correction value. If vehicle is inclined to rear, subtract correction value. For example
- Camber value as measured at wheel alignment tester: 1° 10'
- Correction value for vehicle tilt (1° tilt toward front): plus 1°
- Caster (for zero vehicle tilt): 1° 10' + 1° = 2° 10'

JACKING PRECAUTIONS
Only two-pillar or two-column lifting platforms with adequately long supporting arms may be used for lifting the Transporter.
A single post lifting platform may be used in exceptional circumstances for short wheelbase unladen vehicles. Lifting platforms with a liquid cushion (reception repair platforms) must not be used for lifting the vehicle.
Before driving on to a lifting platform ensure there is sufficient clearance between low lying vehicle components and lifting platform.
FLOOR JACK
Vehicle may only be lifted with a floor jack at points indicated for use with lifting platform. (Scheme 7)and (Scheme 8). Lift front of vehicle on crossmember. Lift rear of vehicle on rear control arm mounting. To prevent damage always use a suitable rubber or wooden block.
| CAUTION | On no account should the vehicle be lifted under the engine oil pan, transmission, on front or rear axle or on side members as this may cause serious damage. |
Scheme 6
Scheme 7
HOIST
Unladen short wheelbase vehicles may in exceptional cases also be lifted with a single post lifting platform. The lifting point in this case is the longitudinal member reinforcing plate. (Scheme 9)
Scheme 8
PRELIMINARY CHECKS
| CAUTION | DO NOT attempt to correct alignment by straightening parts. Damaged parts must be replaced. |
Before adjusting wheel alignment, check following
- Do not check vehicle alignment before vehicle has completed 600 to 1200 miles, to allow for coils springs to settle.
- The actual load condition at the time of alignment is a deciding factor for the application of the specified values (empty, 1/2 net load, full load).
- Ensure tires are of same construction and tread style, equal in tread wear and overall diameter. Verify that radial and axial runout is not excessive. Tire inflation should be adjusted to manufacturer's specifications.
- Steering linkage and suspension must not have excessive play. Check for wear in tie rod ends and ball joints. Springs must not be sagging. Control arm and strut rod bushings must not have excessive play.
- Vehicle must be on level floor and spare tire in place.
- Bounce front and rear end of vehicle several times. Confirm vehicle is at normal ride height.
- Steering wheel must be centered with wheels in straight ahead position. If required, shorten one tie rod adjusting sleeve and lengthen opposite sleeve (equal amount of turns).
- Wheel bearings should have the correct preload and lug nuts must be tightened to manufacturer's specifications.
- Ensure that sliding plates and turntables (alignment equipment) are not touching an end stop when checking wheel alignment. Test equipment must be properly adjusted and attached to the vehicle; observe device manufacturer's operating instructions.
Front Axle
- Loosen bolt "a". (Scheme 10) To loosen and tighten with wheel installed, turn steering as necessary.
- Loosen nut "b". Modify 3252 box wrench (46 mm) as shown in illustration. (Scheme 11) Adjust eccentric socket "A" until the specified value has been reached using special tool (3252A). (Scheme 12)
- While counter holding eccentric nut, tighten nut "b" to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156451-S42459072922003071700000). Tighten bolt "a" to specification. After fasteners are torqued, recheck all wheel alignment settings and readjust as necessary.
Scheme 9
Scheme 10
Scheme 11
Scheme 12
Scheme 13
- Turn steering gear to center position. Turn steering wheel from lock to lock and count number of turns. Turn steering wheel back half the number of turns. Precisely align steering spindle with aid of point on the rubber washer and notch in housing. Point and notch must be aligned. (Scheme 13)
- Loosen tie-rod lock nut. (Scheme 14) Loosen steering rack boot clamp.
- Turn both tie rods until specification is achieved. Tighten tie-rod lock nut. After adjusting tie rod, ensure rack boots did not turn. Twisted boots will wear out quickly. After tie-rod lock nuts are torqued, recheck all wheel alignment settings and readjust as necessary.
Rear
- Loosen nut "a" on control arm. see scheme 14
- Move control arm forward or back until specification is achieved (vehicle weight on its wheels.) Tighten nut "a" to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156451-S42459072922003071700000). After fasteners are torqued, recheck all wheel alignment settings and readjust as necessary.
