VISUAL INSPECTION

Prior to retrieving DTCs, perform a thorough visual inspection of underhood components. Check ground connections located on intake manifold, ground cable between engine and vehicle body and that battery cables are clean and tight. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.

Check vacuum hoses for breakage and blockage. Check electrical wiring and harness connectors for damage and corrosion. Repair as necessary.

Scheme 46

Scheme 46: Compression (2.8L VR6, Engine Code AES)
  1. Ensure battery is fully charged. Engine oil temperature should be a minimum of 86°F (30°C).
  2. Turn ignition off. Remove radiator grille. Remove right and left side securing bolts for lock carrier. (Scheme 46) Tilt lock carrier with radiator toward the front.
  3. Disconnect heater element connector. Remove intake hose between upper air cleaner and throttle valve control module together with PCV valve.
  4. Unclip cover for ignition coils with power output stage. Disconnect harness connector from ignition coil/output stage. (Scheme 47)
  5. When performing compression check, throttle valve should be open. Check engine mechanical condition with a compression gauge and remote starter to crank engine. See «COMPRESSION SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-162789-S08479702422004061000000) table.

Scheme 49

Scheme 49
  1. Ensure battery is fully charged. Engine oil temperature should be a minimum of 86°F (30°C).
  2. Turn ignition off. Remove engine cover. (Scheme 48) Remove intake hose between Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor (G70) and throttle valve control module (J338).
  3. Remove radiator grille. Remove right and left securing bolts for lock carrier. (Scheme 46) Tilt lock carrier with radiator toward the front.
  4. Unclip cover for ignition coils/power output stage. Disconnect harness connectors from ignition coils/power output stage (Scheme 49)
  5. When performing compression check, throttle valve should be open. Check engine mechanical condition with a compression gauge and remote starter to crank engine. See «COMPRESSION SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-162789-S08479702422004061000000) table.
