IDENTIFICATION

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Engine identification number is stamped on a machined pad, left side of engine block, near distributor assembly (1.8L). (Scheme 1) The first 2 characters designate engine code.

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

The radiator cooling fan is a 2-speed motor. Low speed of cooling fan should come on at 198-207°F (92-97°C) and will shut off at 183-196°F (84-91°C). High speed comes on at 210-221°F (99-105°C) and will shut off at 196-208°F (91-98°C). An after-run switch is used to help prevent fuel vaporization. The thermoswitch turns cooling fan on when temperatures in engine compartment exceeds 194°F (90°C), and turns it off at 176°F (80°C). The circuit also consist of cooling fan after-run relay (control unit) and fuses.

PRELIMINARY INSPECTION

CAUTIONDo not quick-charge a battery unless the battery ground cable has been disconnected, or you will damage the alternator diodes.

Before trouble shooting, check the battery for damage, state of charge, and clean and tight connections. Check the alternator belt tension.

Verify customer complaint by operating system. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage. Check the fuses and relays in the fuse/relay panel. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . Inspect for loose or corroded connections, damaged wiring harnesses and/or switches. Check for a broken or partially broken wire inside insulation, which could cause system malfunction but prove good in a continuity/voltage check with system disconnected. Ensure any aftermarket electronic equipment is properly installed. If fault is found, repair as necessary. If no fault is found. Check cooling fan components. See COMPONENT TESTS .

COMPONENT TESTS

WARNINGAlways keep clear of the fan blades. The cooling fan may run at any time, even with the ignition off.

COOLING FAN AFTER-RUN THERMOSWITCH

  1. Turn key ON/OFF.
  2. Disconnect thermoswitch and touch to ground. Fan must come on.
  3. If fan turns on, replace the switch.
  4. If fan does NOT turn on, check the circuit. For operating specifications. REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
WARNINGThe cooling system is pressurized when the engine is warm. When opening the system, wear gloves and other appropriate protection, cover the cap with a cloth and open carefully to relieve system pressure slowly.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Drain coolant from radiator.
  3. Disconnect electrical connector from thermoswitch.
  4. Remove thermoswitch. To install, reverse removal procedures. Replace "O" ring. Tighten thermoswitch to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/volkswagen/corrado/i-1988-1995/remont/cooling-fan/#electric-cooling-fans-engine-code-pg__torque-specifications) .
  5. Refill radiator.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect electrical connector. (Scheme 3)
  3. Unbolt the fan shroud from the radiator.
  4. Remove the shroud with the fan.
  5. To install, reverse removal procedures. Tighten fan shroud fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/volkswagen/corrado/i-1988-1995/remont/cooling-fan/#electric-cooling-fans-engine-code-pg__torque-specifications).
