Note. Engine and transaxle should be removed as an assembly.

Removal

  1. Release fuel pressure at filter. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-48942-S01417105622001011500000). Drain coolant and engine oil. Remove battery. Mark hood hinge location reference and remove hood. Remove radiator reservoir tank. Remove cooling fan and radiator.
  2. Remove PCV hoses from engine, leaving hoses connected to air intake duct. Remove air intake duct from throttle body. Remove air cleaner cap with air intake duct attached. Remove air cleaner case assembly with plastic air intake connector attached. Remove air cleaner bracket. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle body. On A/T models, disconnect throttle cable from throttle body.
  3. On all models, remove charcoal canister. Mark/label and disconnect all vacuum hoses, fuel hoses, electrical wiring connections, and coolant hoses from engine.
  4. Disconnect speedometer cable and control cables from transaxle. On A/T models, remove control cable bracket. On M/T models, remove clutch release (slave) cylinder from transaxle and wire aside. DO NOT disconnect hydraulic line from cylinder.
  5. On all models, disconnect clamps/straps attaching engine wire harness. Move wire harness out of way. Remove starter. At right engine mounting bracket, disconnect ground strap and remove bracket containing vacuum transmitting valves. Remove all accessory drive belts. On models with power steering, remove power steering pump and wire aside. DO NOT disconnect power steering hoses.
  6. On models with A/C, remove A/C compressor and wire A/C compressor aside. DO NOT disconnect A/C hoses. Remove A/C compressor mounting bracket from engine.
  7. On all models, raise and support vehicle. Remove engine undercovers. Drain transaxle fluid. Remove wheel assemblies. Remove axle shafts hub cotter pins and lock nuts. Disconnect tie-rod end from steering knuckle using Puller (SST 09628-62011).
  8. Remove 3 bolts retaining lower control arm to ball joint. Remove axle shaft from hub/steering knuckle assembly using care not to damage boot or inner oil seal. DO NOT allow axle shaft to hang.
  9. To remove inner CV joint, position wooden block or hammer handle against transaxle case near CV joint. (Scheme 4)- (Scheme 6). Using large pry bar against wooden block for leverage, pry axle shaft CV joint from transaxle. To remove right axle shaft assembly, it may be necessary to use brass drift and hammer to forcibly drive CV joint from transaxle. (Scheme 4)- (Scheme 6).
  10. Disconnect front exhaust pipe from manifold. Attach chain hoist hooks to engine hangers and apply support tension to engine assembly. Remove all 4 engine mount through bolts. Remove engine mounts after engine is removed from vehicle.
  11. Disconnect grounding straps from engine mounts. Using hoist, carefully raise engine out of vehicle while lowering transaxle to clear battery carrier body support. Once assembly is on floor, separate engine from transaxle. On A/T models, remove 6 bolts retaining torque converter to flywheel/drive plate before removing transaxle from engine.

Note. Engine and transaxle should be installed as an assembly.

Installation

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-48942-S37766003202001011500000) table. Add proper amount of engine oil, transmission fluid and coolant.
  2. Ensure vacuum hose routing is correct. Position grounding straps aside. Adjust accelerator cable and throttle cable. Start engine and check for leaks. Perform road test and make adjustments as required.
